Subject: [Chaos] Lord vs. Sorcerer/Which god to serve?

Yo.
Dual question, both are relevant and weave together into eachother.
Starting a Chaos army to go counter to my Sisters/Salamanders. I want to make a themed list, but this is less important than battle effectiveness. Here are the models I have;
1x Chaos Lord/Sorc
12x Chosen
1x Hellbrute
10x Warp Talons
10x CSM
Kinda a mash of deals I got from the Dark Vengeance kit for cheap and some others I had previously. I WANT to build a foot-sloggers list(I am completely unimpressed by vehicles in 6th edition, statwise and modelingwise), preferably themed to serve a single god; which is open for discussion! I like Tzeentch, the save is great if I add in some Terminators and Thousand Sons. Then again, Nurgle has some awesome stuff. I also like Slaanesh, mostly just fluff and modelling wise, not really a fan of his Noise Marines.
Not a fan or Khorne at all

Well, you cannot go wrong with Two Heldrakes, with Baleflamers, that's for sure. They are the best unit in the dex.
Warptalons are terrible, sadly. It's best to leave them off the table.
Thousand Sons are overcosted, and a 6++ invul save on regular troops is just not worth it. The lore is also inferior to Nurgle and Slaanesh. I would stay away from Tzeentch.
If you are footslooging, then Nurgle is your best choice. T5 FNP Plague Marines are very resilent, and T5 CSMs aren't that bad either. Nurgle is also the best choice for Oblits, as that T5 helps the ID threshold against a lot of weapons. It also makes them even more resilient to Small arms.
Consider Typhus and plague zombies as well. Plague Zombies are great Tarpits/objective holders, and Typhus is beastly on his own.
Slaanesh is good on certain units. a 10 man squad of Slaanesh Bikers with IoE is an excellent unit. Noise Marines also got pretty damn good with the FAQ update. I'm sure you can model your own, so you don't have to deal with those crappy finecast kits.
You'll want to have a nice blob of cultists at the very least, for backfield objective holding. They are cheap, and perfect for sitting back there.

I will second the heldrakes with baleflamers. Running double dragon is too good not to go with them. If you can, rip the arms off of the warp talons and convert them into normal raptors. Raptors are respectable, can carry nice weapons, have grenades, and are still cool models. Unfortunately, no one has of yet come up with any use for warp talons that raptors or other CSM fast attack can't do better or more cheaply. If it's the Dark Vengeance Chaos Lord, then you may want to run him as a sorcerer -- generic power armored lords usually aren't recommended unless you're doing something very specific, and that often involves being on a bike or a Juggernaut (which you can't really convert your lord into). I'd recommend cutting off his plasma pistol arm and giving him a bolt pistol while you're at it. Tzeentch is a bad choice if you're going mono-god. The only things you get out of it are 4++ terminators and a 3++ lord/sorcerer. Even then, tzeentch psychic powers are the worst of the lot. For psychic powers, general consensus is that Nurgle powers are fine, Slaanesh powers are good, and going unmarked with three telepathy powers is also good. I won't yet say Thousand Sons are bad, but they are very expensive, and people also haven't figured out an effective way to run them. The fact that the leader is a psyker is mitigated by his needing to take the aforementioned bad tzeentch powers, basically meaning that the sorc is a heavy weapons guy that can randomly kill himself instead of a buffer/debuffer. Plague Marines or Noise Marines are some of the best troops we got -- Plagues for their reliability, survivability, and ability to take 2 specials at 5, Noise Marines for AP3 shooting with blastmasters and doom sirens. Nurgle or Slaanesh are probably your best bet for mono-god lists -- Tzeentch has been explained, and while Khorne gets some cool toys like Juggernaut Axe Lords, going all Khorne is not viable, and you don't like Khorne anyway, so he's out. Since if you're taking things like Obliterators they really need to be Nurgle, I'd recommend going Nurgle. As said, Typhus makes it happen and Zombies are great. If you want noise marines without buying the kit, hack off the front of any heavy weapon and stick on a gargoyle head from the chaos vehicle accessory sprue, and you have your blastmaster. For Nurgle, Nurgle CSM, Plagues, Nurgle Oblits, Nurgle Raptors, Nurgle Bikers, Heldrakes, Typhus, Zombies, Nurgle Spawn, Generic Nurgle Sorcerors or Biker Lords are all themed options that are quite viable on their own.

Actually looking at what you have for models I would say a Tzeentch themed army would work great for the table top.
1.) Warlord Sorcerer - 3++ save with Sigil of Corruption
2.) Chosen - Marked 6++ save is ok, but the IoF gives them Soul Blaze which I like fluff wise and it's good for Dakka Chosen
3.) Warp Talons - MoT gives them 3+/4++
4.) CSM = 1kSons and gives you another sorcerer plus a 4++ a little pricy but that's how Tzeentch roles...
In my opinion most of the Tzeentch powers are good not "OMG the greatest powers ever!" The Sorcerer can get 2 other powers and he has access to the Biomacy and Telepathy which are great for buffing your assualting units or messing with the enemy. Plus if you want to go all MSU then 1ksons can load out 6 sorcerers for troop choices, that's a lot of powers flying down range plus bolters to boot.
Food for thought
Oh yeah, 10 Warp Talons with the Sorcerer with wings would be great for moving up and dishing out the pyshic powers while they move into assualt, you can some great powers in the telepathy and biomacy realm. Automatically Appended Next Post: In addition, Brom made a really good Ahriman tactica run down here on Dakka dakka. I read it and it really helped me decide what powers to go with when I was up in the air, this can be applied to regular Sorcerers too just not to the extent of Ahrimans lvl4 mastery.

Thanks for the replies all!
I'm not stuck on any one god, in particular. I just want to have a good comp BEFORE I go buy models haha.
In any case, lots of great replies, I'll analyze Slaanesh and Nurgle, see what I can come up with.
Stand by!
