Hi all. Ive just ordered the da upgrade sprue and im going to pick up the veteran box soon... Looking at the codex. Id like them to be a combat unit (for friendly play) how would you kit them out to get the most from them?

Storm shields are fun but get expensive fast for models that start at 18pts.
Also note that the FAQ (http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m2960142a_Dark_Angels_v1.0A_JANUARY13.pdf) has changed the options slightly (for the batter!), so you've got more power weapons / fists available than the dead-tree version suggests.

Using them as a first-turn drop suicide squad with Combi-weapons is a good call. Not *quite* as potent as Sternguard, but hey, there's still nothing like DS'ing first turn and nuking that squad of Broadsides/Terminators/insert super killy squad here.

Combi-weapons in a drop pod.

Sick thankyou guys... I see the joys of the deepstriking ones... But wouldnt hey be better as a deepstriling combat unit? Like with storm shields and power wepons?

For that role I'd prefer a command squad because they can get cheap FNP and a company champ for cheap too.

No. What is the use for them to deep-strike and sit around being shot up for a turn? If you want the PW/SS-armed Vets, put them in a Land Raider and ram them into your opponent.

In addition to the previous poster rightfully pointing out the futility of deep striking assault units, you're choice of wargear makes them cost as much as a Terminator. If that's what you want, use those.

Thankyou all. I could kit them out as a command squad. As thatprobably would be better lol.

Im just getting them as an alternative to terms. I already have a 2k deathwing army...

I know the combi wepons are good though and i might still consider it...

Would you upgrade to 10? 7/8 with combi (plasma?) and 2-3 with special wepons (plasma?)?

I would question paying for an expensive invulnerable save for a unit that's only left with boltguns and knives after its initial salvo.

True... So how about combat shields? Thats 10 vets. All with combat shields. 2 meltas 8 combi meltas in a drop pod 365 pts? Too much? Droppi g the shields would drop it down to 315...

Sorry wrong again... The faq dropped the points too... So 265 pts... Without shields lol

If you want assault vets consider dropping the shields and taking Azrael with them instead. He unlocks both ravenwing and deathwing as troops lets you pick the warlord trait and will give the vets 4+ invul if you can put em in a land raider to get where they need to go it can be nasty same with a command squad though.

What so power wepon them? No shields. Azreal hq. Land raider will be abit expensive i think...

Just depends on the what you want in the rest of your army. If you want some DW and Bikes Azrael is a decent choice for an hq to make those units scoring. If you want CC vets then a land raider is the best way to deliver them as well so it is probably points you will spend anyways with or without Az you also need at least one HQ so Az can be it (although I will be honest and say a libby is a great choice or something you will want to add so you might be adding his complete cost)

Edit: and sorry if I was unclear the CC vets is an option besides the drop pod melta vets just depends what you want to do.

Command Squad can take a Meltagun or Plasma for the same price as a Combi Weapon - let me ask - who the hell would rather have a Combi Melta over a regular Melta?

Your right but you can only have 5 of them... And dont they have to be set up with the hq their selected with.. So for a suicide unittheyre abit meh

2 problems:

1. Plasma guns in command squads are more expensive than combi-plasmas on veterans.

2. Command squads are 5 guys. Veterans can be 10. 10 combi-plasmas is better than 4 plasma guns.

If you want them to be a Close combat unit your best bet is to stick them in a land raider with a chaplain and give them all a power weapon or so for the charge.

Personally I prefer doing this with the command squad, only 5 men but the apothecary is great for FNP and the chapter banner has an amazing +1 attack (making 5 each in the charge, 6 on the interrorgator chaplain).

For even more awesomeness, change the interrorgator for Azrael. He will have 7 attacks in the charge (at str 6) and give them all a 4++

But for vets, just go combi's in a pod and combat squad them so you can hit 2 targets if you need. and then let em die so keep em as cheap as possible. Very bad compared to sternguard (as you pay double for a combi with these vets) but still fun and effective all round

That is a good idea with the apoth and banner, i probably wouldnt put azreal in there with them though as he really bulks up the price and (yes hes awesome) yet only gives them a 4++ when they already have 5+ FNP...

seems like a waste, where as a chaplin would give them hatred...
