This will be the first Space Marine list I have written in about 10 years, and my first Warhammer list period in about 5, so I'll definitely need some help. I'm going largely off of what I have for the 500 point list, but the 1000 point one I'm starting to think about what to buy next. Any input you have would be greatly appreciated.
Space Marines 500 pts
Librarian 100 pts
Tactical Squad 210 pts
+5 marines
+Flamer
+Rocket Launcher
+Melta Bombs
+Rhino
Scout Squad 85 pts
+Heavy Bolter
Assault Squad 105 pts
+Melta Bombs
At 500 points there's not much to say, but the basic idea will be to use combat squad the tacticals and stick the squad with the sergeant and flamer into the rhino along with the librarian, and use them and the assault squad more aggressively. Meanwhile the rocket launcher combat squad and the scouts will provide the main fire support. I have melta bombs just in case they take any armor, and I am wondering if I might be better served trading those for a meltagun in the tacticals or maybe drop the assault squad and add attack bikes or a landspeeder. Thoughts?

At 1000 points things become more interesting. The focal point of the army will be the sternguard whizzing around with the librarian using Gates of Infinity to get them where they need to be. Both tactical squads will be combat squaded and the two rocket launcher squads, and the predator will hang back providing the main base of fire and taking any further back objectives. The other two combat squads (with flamers and sergeants) will aim for forward objectives with the razorback providing some forward fire support. The attack bikes are there to threaten enemy armor/ hard to break units, and I am still unsure if I would prefer to take these or landspeeder(s). This list Is starting to look good to me, but I would definitely like opinions especially on how to deal with extreme armies, ie. hordes/ tank heavy armies. Thanks!

For the 500 point list i would drop the Assualt squad, its just a more costly space marine with a pistol imsted, Insted i would rather get another tac squad and rhino
Also switch the scouts to snipers with Telion and Thunder fire cannon thats a strong combo
For the 1000 points
I would drop the rhino and Predator and run razor backs with heavy bolters and Give the stern guard a Drop pod or even a rhino Insted.
I don't like the idea of potently killing your entire unit by bad dice rolling

Yup. If you can, go Razorback over Rhino (At least you got a weapons platform on the field). Go Drop Pod over Rhino. I have 6 of my own rhinos but they get destroyed pretty quick.

Ok. I like what you are saying with switch out the predator for the razorbacks, I mostly had it in because the last time I played they were such a common sight in all marine armies. I'm probably going to go with a rhino with extra armor for my sternguard as I want them to be able to be mobile. I don't really want to take sergeant telion of the thunderfire right now. I'm shying away from named characters until I choose what company's fluff I want to drop, and honestly, I just don't like the thunder fire cannon. Also would 5 basic tactical marines really be that much better than an assault squad at 500 points? (legitimate question, not so much questioning your advice, on paper it seems like at such low points assault marines could be effective.)

with one drop pod you could drop it in on the first turn. And remember that it can't scatter onto units or dangerous/imassable terrain. It's storm bolter proves extreemly effective on weak infantry (guard again) and if your sternguard have combi-meltas, you can wreck tanks. I defiantly think that 5 marines is better then 5 assault marines
Space marines don't belong to combat, they want to be able to out shoot and rapid fire the enemy
If you want Assault marines go with blood angles.
At lest they have rules to help them in assaults
But our Assault marines is a Marine with a pistol and jump pack
Bikes and land spaders are a much better choice for a fast attack slot
170 points for standard tac squads gives you a flamer and missile launcher for free
for the same amount of body's in a 10 man Assault squad, 190 points you get pistols. witch also costs more
Play test them though, because these is only my ideas about them.
Also Telion is great, 50 points is a steal for what he does
I have him in my salamanders army
Thunder fire cannon is pretty good
but i can understand it is isn't for everyone
It is just a good combo with scouts

I agree that 5 marines are better that 5 assult marines. Regular marines are able to rapid fire and can throw kraks agianst heavy infantry, frags against light infantry, and are better all around. If you list includes scouts maybe take a land speeder storm with an autocannon. it's more effective as a fast attack unit and boost your scouts usefulness.

At 500 points Assault marines bring nothing to the table, that will off set the lose of a scoring unit. Same stat line as a basic marine, but with shorter range weapons and little more speed. If you are looking for damage output, just compare the effect of 5 pistol marines at 105 points to the effect of the Predator at 85 points.

Don't get in the habit of fielding MLs. Almost any other heavy weapon will give you more utility in practice. For this list, I'd recommend lascannons because some things you don't want to get within melta range for necessarily.
I'd also consider an alternative: a tactical squad with a plasma gun, a combi plasma and a plasma cannon. I find this works pretty well for my BA.
TFC cannon is good against almost any list, because it has the strength on its regular round to torrent meqs. It owns hordes counting on cover.
ASM for vanilla marines have issues. I wouldn't use them at 1K.

Thanks for the advice. I'm definitely dropping the assault marines and I'll use the models I have to put towards my pool of parts to convert into other squads (ie. my sternguard). I don't have any lacannons at the moment but eventually I'll get a set of devastators (or even just their weapons off of a bits site) and switch at least one of the tactical squads to lascannon.
Another quick question, what do you guys think about converting stalker pattern bolters as "snipers" for my scouts? If I was going to play you and I told you thats what they were counting as would you have any objections? Automatically Appended Next Post: Also here's my updated 500 point list:

I wouldn't care. I really don't have a good idea of how good sniper scouts are, because my troops for BA are always tac marines and ASM.

I personaly would have no objection whatsoever. Actually, i think the stalkers look better than regular snipers. Sniper Scouts however, have a certain role on the battlefield. They can pick off enemy comanders or other important units (i.e. flagbearers that give bounuses, units that have devistating melee weapons and so on). Some people can find adapted roles for them but this is what i use mine for

I like the this list, at 500 you won't see a lot of tanks or high av, only light and few witch your Ml should be enough for that
good amount of anti infantry from the razor back
plenty of bolt guns
and snipers to poke at the enemy

Also a Razorback only carries 6 models. In a 10 model squad.... There's some obious mathmatical problems.

I know that they only carry 6. I would combat squad my units with the sergeant, flamer, and three other marines in the razorback and the missile launcher with the rest of the marines footslogging it/ hanging back.
