Thought I would share with everyone my findings:
I picked up some cheap, white gesso from the art store to prime minis. This went on thick and stringy, creating large globs and detail loss after drying.
On the contrary, Liquitex clear gesso worked wonderfully. Although it looks white from the bottle, it doesn't tint any other paint you add to it (hence the "clear"). It dried perfectly with virtually no detail loss. The color coverage was a bit splotchy, so a base coat is still in order, but being able to color it with craft paints from Micheals will make the base coat way easier. Note that I really slathered the gesso on, but I did thin it with a few drops of water first.
Lesson learned, just fork out an extra few bucks for the expensive gesso. You're gonna get about 100 minis out of it anyway.
