When the postman handed me the large box, he must've noticed my inane grin. They were finally here! My Cygnar army!

A couple weeks back I started reading up on Warmachine - and I liked what I saw. Coming from 40k, I appreciated the clear-cut rules and that the ressource management and decisions you make on the field seem to matter a lot more than the list you bring. So after some deliberation, I decided to go all out and ordered up a 35 point Cygnar army.

And here it is! Still in mint condition, but I've got a whole sunday coming up with nothing else planned. Time to sharpen the cutter! And to keep me motivated, I decided to start this blog, which I'm planning to update whenever I've made some significant progress.

Oh yeah, the army list for those interested:

Captain Allister Caine - WJ: +5
- Squire - PC: 2
- Ironclad - PC: 7

Journeyman Warcaster - PC: 3
- Charger - PC: 4
Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator - PC: 1

Arcane Tempest Gun Mages - Leader & 5 Grunts: 6
- Arcane Tempest Gun Mage Officer - Officer 2
- Hunter - PC: 6
Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team - Lynch, Ryan & Watts: 4
Horgenhold Forge Guard - Leader & 5 Grunts: 5

So far, so good - managed to assemble everything over the weekend. Next weekend I'll try basing and priming the first lot, and then it's off to the painting station

Oh yeah, I've also given them a place to hang out:

A day off work with the stomach flu gives you time... to paint! I used that to (very nearly) finish my first warjack today - the only things that are missing are his shield, the basing and his feet (will do these after the base drybrushing). So only a quick WIP snapshot for now:

Good looking Warjack. Me = Warmachine fan, though I`m a Cryx collector.

He's done

Also made a lot of progress with the gunmages and Stryker, but I won't post them until they're finished. Also, tonight marks my first game - I'm splitting my force in two for a demo game against a friend of mine, hopefully he'll like it enough to start his own faction.

Still hard at work with my Cygnar, today I finished Stryker!

He's got a bit of a wonky eye, but I'm really happy with how he's come out. The highlights on the blue are the most involved I've ever done, with four stages (Cygnar Blue Base in the recesses, built up to 1/2 Cygnar Blue Highlight + 1/2 White). I figured when I've only got about 30 models on the table, I might as well go the extra mile when painting them up

Looks really good. Love the shade of blue and I really like how his face and hair look. Nice work.

I challenged myself to see if I could paint a Warjack in a single day. Turns out I could paint two So much for my day off! But at least I got the Battlebox done in time for a Journeyman League that I managed to join:

Finished my gunmages today, pretty happy with how they turned out! Just in time for my first Journeyman League tomorrow - I'll be able to field a 15 point list that's fully painted, varnished and based

Had my first Journeyman League games yesterday, and I had a blast. There were eight people there, most fielded painted armies while we played on good terrain. Everyone was relaxed and super-cool, with a BBQ in the snow afterwards, good times. I'll definitely go back for the next round even though it was a one-hour drive. This game really is a lot of fun. I played three games, of which I won one - hey, better than I expected going in!

First game was at 15 points versus another Cygnar player, after a strong start (he had the B13 base to base, I killed all of them with a single CRA from my gunmages) I focused too much on hurting his caster and neglected the Objective, where he massed his 3 jacks. He clobbered my Ironclad and opened up a charge line, charged in with his Ironclad and hammered my Stryker into the ground with a single hit. Smooth.

Second game, again 15 points against Khador, he had a Decimator I think, 5 Shocktroopers and a Mahnunter Solo. I had a lot of trouble putting the hurt on the wall of armor coming my way. All in all I think I did quite well, my Hunter was amazing against the Decimator, and I popped him with a Disruption shot whenever I could. With my AOEs I managed to take Sorscha down to 6 health, but he popped his feat and killed Stryker - this time with the Decimator, I was beginning to see a pattern here.

Last game was against Cygnar again, this time at 25 points. I did a hard push for the center objective and managed to kill everything in its radius but his Junior, who was within 1 inch. I tried pushing him off with the gunmages Thunderbolt, but all 3 missed! In the next round he moved to claim more of the objective, and gave me the opportunity to move up my remaining gunmages for a CRA against his caster, which took him out.

Things I learned: Gunmages are AMAZING, and don't let your Caster get charged by a heavy with 3 focus.

Today, something completely different! Since I've started playing Warmachine, I've been itching to get some place to play it in style, instead of my boring old urban-themed 40k table. So I started working on a modular get-up this weekend. It's still very much a work in progress, but I wanted to share what I've got so far:

[

I've also ordered up some terrain, even splurged for one of the amazing (and expensive) buildings from Tabletop World, although I guess my painting won't do them justice. Here's some example set-ups I've tossed around (just some quick mock-ups made in Excel with the terrain I've got ordered filling mostly entire squares, but you get the idea):

Linear Obstacles are always nice in Warmahordes, so I painted some up. The GW walls kit is good value (these are not even half the pieces you get for about 15€), but in hindsight I should've removed the obligatory skulls first.

I finally got my order from Tabletop world in, and even though I'll risk sounding like I'm throwing a sales pitch, I have to say: the amount of detail is amazing. I didn't have to do any clean-up at all, and the details on the little cottage I bought is so crisp that even the flocking sand on the base is part of the model. I've only had some of GW's finecast models before, so my experience with resin is limited, but this stuff really looks great. Today I painted up two small pieces (will probably use them as objective markers or just set dressing) and the roof of the well, I think they turned out rather nice:

I like the way you've painted your blue, it's smooth and has nice depth.

On a side note, why are the bases half blue? Is it something to do with determining arcs of vision or something for gaming purposes? (I'm a bit of a WM noob, I'm afraid )

How to paint Skeletons the way I do if that's something you'd fancy trying.

Thanks! Yes, in Warmachine the models have a front arc and a back arc, which is important in a lot of ways - for example, shields only help you in the front arc, and you can only charge what you see in that area.

Besides the terrain, I've also painted up a couple support pieces and another Warjack:

With that, I've got half of my starting lineup painted - 14 of 28 models. I did buy some more stuff in the meantime, though - feels like a hobby curse, as soon as you've got a couple things painted, you start buying more instead of working on your OTHER unpainted models

Instead of painting my army like I should, I keep getting distracted with small side-projects. This time, objective markers!

I love the bold blue you're using. Those objective markers look great too.

Three months since I started with these, time to pack out the army and look at what I've gotten finished in that time:

I'm a slow painter and took my time with these, so I'm happy with what I've gotten painted up in that time - especially considering all the terrain and table tiles I did on the side.

Keep it up, and I like the blue front arc markings!

Went on a terrain binge this week - I finished up yet another new table (the modular gras mats where nice in theory, but boring to look at), two lakes, two woods and a hill. I just put most of my terrain out on the table to snap a pic, the next game can't come soon enough!

Been a while since I posted here, so I thought I'd share two of my newest additions to my forces:

It's been almost a year since I posted this image, the start of my Warmachine army. And while I've been busy since then, revised the army lists a dozen times, got lots of gaming in and painted lots of stuff other than my first purchases, I never got around to finishing the first batch... until this Friday, when I finally sat down and painted the small little gobber in the background. I decided to unpack these minis once again and take a group shot celebrating my humble beginnings

Aaah... brings a tear to my eyes.
