I'm looking for a good master or box set to go with the guild riflemen I could not resist buying as a second faction. I also grabbed an Exorcist to proxy as my Inquisitor for Dark Heresy. Got anything that would be off the shelf, easy, maybe a few more plastics...?
I prefer the look of Kirai and friends, but it helps to have two factions to demo the game, and I'm too newb to be aware of every possibility.
Seriously, any constructive tips will be welcome, and my local stockist has most things available.

Guild rifle men work well with Lucius. Lucius runs the guild, and can only hire guild guard, rifle men, austringers, drill sgt, guild hounds and guild guard captain. You should pick up the drill sgt along with the Lucius box. Lucius gives everyone, guildmen only, within 8 inches +2 cb. The drill sgt can give guildmen within 4 inches a +flip to ranged attacks.

Damn, that's nice. And Lucius isn't a bad figure to boot. Not too sure about the Frankenstein type monster in the box set, but oh well.
I'm guessing, from the rules I have read, that I can hire my exorcist, but only one, since he's still in the faction but not in the regular Lucius hiring rules?

Since I did get an Exorcist, and he has the Death Marshall rule, I think I will be going for a Lady Justice Set and get Lucius as a single blister.

Lucius is a good box, but, better with blisters. Ryle, that character fits better with Hoffman. Ou can not use an exorcist with Lucius, if you are using Lucius as a master. However, he works well as a henchmen to Lady J. Basically build a Lucius force but hire him, and all his guild guard buddies. Then move him up the board. Keep guards nearby to bolster his DF. Then use reinforcements to place lady J in front of him and ready to smack something around.

Yowza! Reinforcements would have been very awesome last night.
I'm looking at Lucius' stats, and here is something I don't get... Sure, he can use his Advanced Training to give +2 Cb to models, but the bonus ends when his activation ends... does that mean that unless he uses his Issue Command, that bonus only affects him?
Also, the Riflemen's Stand and Fire 0 action states that I interrupt a charge and fire at a charging model... does it have to be declared during my activation, or can it be called out of activation, and if my model has already activated this turn? Perdita did something like that last game and the effect could have been very nasty, had I not used a soulstone.

Issue Command is the only way to use Advanced Training, I'm not entirely sure if Advanced Training is a pulse (little guy in paranthesis), aura (guy in black circle), or if it says his minions. If it's any of those, then Lucius is not affected by the bonus from Advanced Training (cause you're never effected by your own pulses or auras unless it says so).

I purchased some Guild Rifleman to go with my Relic Hunters crew. I think the long range would complement the medium range of McCabe, Alchibal and the Wastrels nicely, especially when using the 'Take Aim' action.
The potential to fire 9 shots in one activation is also horrendously good, though I'm not sure how often that particular ability will come into play.

I rarely get the chance to use all 9 shots... BUT I like having a "mobile" Rifleman, and a firing platform of 2 Riflemen for upwards of 6 shots.

It does sound like a big point sink to use all three as a static firebase, but some scenarios might lend themselves well to this. If the opponent has no choice but to go for your master, walking into the teeth of so much lead must be daunting.
I like your idea of a mobile and 2 static, though. Lucius could turn them into lethal snipers.

I used the following list in a 55 soul stone game the other night. My strategy was distract and opponent had line in the sand. I took hold out and body guard (Lucius)
Lady j
Student of conflict
Lucius
Drill sgt
Guild riflemen x3
Guild austringers x2
Niño Ortega
Sidir Alchibal.
Deployed Lucius, drill sgt, and the three riflemen on thereof of a building. Sort of off center but had three of the five dynamite targets in range. Niño, sidir, and the student perched up in another building. Sidir on ground level with student near by. Niño on second floor looking outa window. Austringers found some good cover behind a shack and moved forward to use the 12" raptor strike more often. Lady j hidden from view waiting for the reinforce order.
Having the drill do his all action for plus flips ranged attacks, and having Lucius at best telling the riflemen to shoot threetimesduring his activation at +2 cb helped a lot.
I would not run theriflemenwithout Lucius/drill sgt.

Running them without those two is riskier, but they still work.
I like the fact that there are good combos, but you can still perform even if you don't take advantage of all of them.

How would they work in smaller games near 20-30 ss? I just started guild with lady j box and am thinking of tossing them in for my next add-on

That is exactly what I have. I'll be honest, Lady J's box is less useful if you are not facing Ressurectionists, but they can still get the job done. The Riflemen are much more of an all-comer choice, rather than Death Marshalls. If it weren't for the fact that they are Rare 3, I could see taking more of them.
Which makes me think: in a brawl, would taking a single master, Lucius as a Henchman and a ton of guard models be a viable alternative to pricier, elite models? I find that out-activating your enemy can be very advantageous.

You don't even have to make it a Brawl... I'm starting to do this, but if you talk to Nix, he likes to build Lucius crews and then run them with Lady J as the master. Justice is only there to kill things, the rest of the crew is designed to work well with Lucius.

I basically run a Lucius list with lady j as the master at 40 and lower points. Lady j is fun to bring up with reinforcements.

I ran the following 35SS Relic Hunters vs my friends Witchhunters the other day:
Lucas McCabe
Luna
Sidir Alchibal
Wastrel x 3
Guild Rifleman x 3
McCabe's 'Keep Up' Pulse was very useful to give the Rifleman what is, essentially, a free Walk in whichever direction McCabe went, and can be used to get them into very good firing positions.
The Rifleman themselves performed exactly how I thought they would: providing the crew with a mass of long-range firepower that no-one really wants to walk into. The usual MO was to activate one separately and, dependant upon range to targets etc., activate the other two as a team to make the most out of 'Combined Fire'.
They were really rather good - downing Criid on Turn 2 after loosing 6 shots at her, which was great fun!

They are pretty amazing. One turn my three took out a Vicky. Well, luciusctelling them to shoot and the drill sgt firing range helped. Three plus flip, +2 cb shots. On there own they are effective to keep an area under control. As stated before, no be wants to send their crew into that much fire power.
Locally, the new thing seems to be mie fang and the Rail golem. The rifle men haven't helped there due to the ruling on steam vent. The austringers help out a lot. I am thinking of picking up Malifaux raptors to help. Any thoughts. Automatically Appended Next Post: They are pretty amazing. One turn my three took out a Vicky. I asked the FLGS to keep their drill sargeant aside for me, if there is a Warden, I'll also pick it up. Not too keen on the look of the Austringers, and I know my friend wants some, so I'll pass.
I just hope I get to play against someone else but Perdita. The FLGS has monthly tournaments, but they always happen on a Sunday, and that's my fiancée's day off, so I have to mind the store. Darn.
