I've put up a link in the main header to our new army painter software. I'll head off some comments right now as a quick FAQ:
1. You can only use images hosted on dakka - your browser will have a security error trying to process external images and it will just not work.
2. Internet Explorer does not support the features we use in the army painter yet. It therefore does not work on any version of IE, but works on every other browser.
3. You can use painted or plain miniatures. Models with a lot of darkness/black will not work well as a base image as it masks most of the detail. Painted models will hide some detail but will look better overall and will show nice highlight effects.
4. Save early and save often when drawing shapes on a template image if you are making a new template. When I add one, I go through about 10 saves over 30-45 minutes.
5. The interface is dodgy and not very intuitive. It will be improved later.
6. You will be able to choose from other paint ranges and free colour selection options in the future. If anyone wants to provide me with hex codes for paint ranges then I can add them much faster.
7. More models will be added as and when I get the time, or as and when people put in the effort to add them. Anybody can add them.
8. All image processing is done on your computer, so if it is slow, use a faster computer.
Above all, enjoy! Improvements will be coming in the future, but I wanted to get it up for people to test and play with now rather than have it sit in the background for months as I tweak it.

Runs quite clunkily to begin with on Waterfox, but does work quite well.

Like with {img} {/img} tags?
Without resorting to saving the image to your own computer then uploading it in dakka's gallery or some other photo hosting site?
Nope, the altered picture is generated on your machine, so it needs to be saved and uploaded to be viewable. Automating saving and uploading would add a lot of unpleasant overheads to Dakka that I'd sooner avoid for now. Automatically Appended Next Post: It is pure Javascript too, so anything that does well processing javascript will run the army painter nicely.

I feel this thread (or a duplicate) could benefit from being in the N&R section too?

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

And dont forget, the whole point of the feature is that you can go here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/painter-add.jsp
and set up your own army painter template from any image whatsoever hosted on dakka.

I'm attempting to use a file for the army painter but when I click the image to add shapes and drag it just tries to drag the picture file instead. Halp?

You dont need to drag when placing shapes, just click and it will draw it to the position of your mouse. If you are doing a curve, just click lots of times
