Never been a fan of NMM and this is a good example of how it can be done poorly.
I would have to agree it looks like a desert scheme paint job. Is that supposed to be for the Deathwing? Why is it brown? Shouldn't it be a bone color?
I applaud you for the attempt but I would not pay for this paint job at all.

I do think the paintjob is outstanding as expected from you, but i do have to agree with balsak about the colouring. I'm, i suppose for a lack of a better word, confused about it.
Is it supposed to be reflecting a desert landscape, or was it an attempt at being gold/bronze?
The base is also a bit of a let down to me. You have this wonderfully blended dreadnought on top, but the base just seems flat and plain, almost like it was unfinished.
The blending is very well done, but i can't help but tilt my head when i look at it.

SE-NMM is a technique where You try to paint a mirror-like reflectionod a model, just like my previous Starmane Unicorns. Thants why there is a horizon line in the middle of most panels, and they reflect desert-like enviroment. It would be more obvious if i painted the upper parts in sky-like blue, but i wanted the sky to be in simillar colours as the desert, different planets different atmospheres.

Hmmm. I'm torn. Personally, I see where you were going with the SE-NMM (what does the SE stand for?) but I think you fell a little short of the mark. If I'm seeing it correctly, then it appears like the entire Dreadnought would have an empty mirror-finish paintjob if he weren't standing on a desert world.
I think it's a great concept, and it could make for a wonderful piece. Have you thought about tinting the reflection to provide some indication of a colored surface? Or having only certain panels with a mirror finish (and thus reflecting the landscape)? My other thought was an anchor object. If there was some kind of anchor object (a sun, an alien cactus, an incoming drop pod, a flag) "off camera" it could provide something to inform the eye that we're seeing reflections. Depending on the angle it would be reflected in multiple panels, and might help to show the kind of image you are wanting. To that end, putting some unusual details into the base, and having those reflect onto the lower leg portions, would also go a long way to making the image more clear.
You've got a great start here, and I hope I was able to provide some kind of helpful suggestions rather than just dumping all over you.

I don't understand what this piece is supposed to be. I see a Dreadnought that is supposed to be 'chrome', or something, within a desert environment. At that stretch, it seems badly executed. If it's supposed to be NMM ala Sanguinary Guard well... It doesn't work. It just looks bad, no matter how skillfully applied the actual paint job is.

SENMM stands for sky-earth non-mettallic metal, basically imitating a chrome effect or highly reflective surface. i think everyone is pranged by the brown-ish colour. i certainly wouldn't say its badly done, just maybe the colouring is off. but, then again if it's supposed to be a polished bronze then i can see it

The scene for this model is as follows: He's on the desert planet and that is reflected on the lower parts, as is on the base. Also I wanted to make the planet as having similar brownish sky. It would be easier to do the standard blue sky and brown earth, but thats not where the challenge is.

Am I wrong in thinking that some of the brown from the sky and land should be present in the metal/metallic weapon parts as well?
I think that throws it off alot as well. the missle launcher especially. You have this metal gun metal type color that I am guess should be reflective, but yet there is no reflection or we would get some of the brown in that as well. and the feet are way to shiny if this is a desert atmosphere. They should be dulled down with dust and the reflection from the sand/dirt.
But again I have never liked NMM.
Just my thinking anyways.

For me the problem here is that the photo needs explaining ! For a reflective surfacing on a model to work, the painting should illustrate that it represents a mirror finish WITHOUT needing to be explained.
If the model was shown with a desert background, instead of plain white, then the background would help explain the effect on the model - equally, the use of a featureless terrain like a desert means that even though the eye is drawn to the "horizon", there is nothing on the model that actually tells you what it is beyond being a blended line.
In short, without a text explanation, there is nothing that tells us "this is a reflection"

You need to do the base (desert at down), them the model will get on there.
But while i do see a great ammount of work and skill in there, it dont look metalic. It look much more like someone painted a beautyfull landscape of a red desert at down, but not metalic.
If it wass supposed to be gold, them you have a poor paintjob.

It looks more like a mural that was painted on the dreadnought rather than a reflection of the environment.
I also think some of the brushwork is a little sloppy; particularly the cage on the searchlight and the inside of the lascannon barrels.
Don't get me wrong, this is a nicley painted model and would make fitting centrepiece on the tabletop, but as a commission piece it falls short.

I think you've done a very good job, as soon as I saw it I could tell it was supposed to be reflecting a desert landscape. Just goes to show what a range of responses a paintjob can provoke!

Oh well... Dakka at it's finest.
I love it when the people who have nothing to show off, or no mentionable skill at all scream the loudest, critizing something they wouldn't be able to recreate or even surpass themselves in ages.
This guys clearly has a lot of skill when it comes to blending.
You may not like the effect he was going for, but there are nicer ways to point that out.

Oh come on... I really like all of Your comments, those praising and those criticising, just goes to show that the model lacks that bit of certainty about a scene. Will work on this in the future.

Thank you! I am glad that you can take criticism for what it is. I personally was not attacking you as a person, just trying to give my point of view. Like I said I applaud the fact that you tried to do NMM. I personally can't do it. But like I have said I also don't like it on a 3 demisional model. It makes it a 2D model in some respects. But I applaud anyone that can paint it.
I do agree with the one person that said if the base helped describe where it was then it would have come acrossed a bit better.
Anyways keep up the good stuff.

I think its a great example of NMM. Done purely as a study of the style, it's great. But I don't get why you would make a dreadnought out of mirrors... Or so shiny that it got that effect. People have covered the reflections missing a focal point, and I think that might help. It's still an impressive piece though. Nice work!
