Wondering Why the Emperor Left
|
...
I lied a tiny bit, I'm actually a Knights of Blood player, a successor chapter. However, once you say Knights of Blood, usually, it doesn't attract as much attention as the good ol' Blood Angels. Though I am tempted to switch to the Blood Angels but, I am afraid my army would lose it's unique factor.
Furthermore, I am still a bit new to the game, and as such, I am almost entirely clueless to the rules. (Only codex I own is the Blood Angels 5th Edition codex.) I've played this game maybe twice, most of my posts on Dakka are for the creative part. Up until recently, this hobby has only been creating unique and tasteful lore, and slowly amassing a space hulk's worth of bits, or so I wish.
Now, I've made two army lists in the forums, each being overlooked completely, and I would like some help in regards to that. I've also started a trade on the Dakka Swap shop to gain some Marines, if that goes well, (Which it will, the guy is a reputable trader, thankfully), I'll have a huge supply drop inbound. (Two ten man tactical squads, standardized with bolters, one five man Assault Squad, and one 5 Man Sniper scout squad.) That would be added to the few I own already, IE: AOBR Captain, three standard marines with bolters, and another with a missile launcher, plus two sergeant, and a misfit OOP sergeant. (Why do I have so many sergeants in my bitz box?)
Anyways, do you guys have any tips? Am I buying models at a terrible period in time, considering price hikes and terrible codex's? Is it /too/ late to get into the hobby besides finishing using what I already own?
How do FOC's work? Let's say I wish to have an army of 1500 points? Can I have two FOCs? I've heard of such a thing done, even people going so far as to paint the separate forces as the same chapter but, in different companies. What about terrain and fortification placement? To be honest, I'm a bit overwhelmed, I just had started playing in the 5th, and now the 6th is out, taking everything I knew and throwing it out the window. I'm tempted once that trade goes off, to buy some Dark Vengence miniatures and sell the Dark Angel bits off them...
Any tips, tricks, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Furthermore, C&C on, or helping me create, my army list would be grand. I can post the army list here or make a new one in the actual Army list later.

The main rulebook explains how FOCs work starting on page 109, it's to long to explain in detail it would be easier to jsut read it in the book.
The blood angels still have some good stuff, their flyer is very powerful.
Admittedly I am out of touch with blood angels(I have an army but they haven't seen the light of day in a while.) I would recommend taking a look at Bolter and Cahinsword, in the Blood Angels section for advice: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/forum/8-blood-angels/

Hey man, welcome.
I've been playing blood angels for a couple years, but there are WAY more experienced players on here.
First, you should get a copy of the 6th edition rules, either the mini rule book here or bartertown or eBay, or a used copy of the full sized one. It will explain a lot of your questions about 6th Ed, such as FOC, allies, fortifications, etc.
Depending on who you talk to, BA got nerfed a bit in 6th Ed because of the changes to furious charge, power weapons, reserves/deep strikes and the such, but its still a great army in my opinion. You can run a variety of fast vehicles, all jump packs, a bunch of death company, stormravens or a blended, balanced list. Hell, you can deep strike land raiders full of death company and assault terminators if you want.
As far as army lists go, just search through Dakka and see what is there, and play some games. Decide what style of play and army you would like, then start hunting for the models you want. Paying full retail for new GW stuff is expensive, but you can get discounts at a lot of stores, online or buy off Dakka or bartertown. Also, craiglslist is a great place to find deals. It sounds like you have a solid start to an army, and by playing a bit and getting a feel for what you want, you can start purchasing more specialized units that make blood angels what they are, IE death company, more assault marines, sanguinary priests, possibly sanguinary guard, Baal predators and the such. It's a very assault oriented army but because the rhino based vehicles are all fast vehicles, it can be ran as a mechanized army as well.
Overall, it's a great army and of my five, still my main army and I add on to it regularly and play it more than any of the others. I'm sure someone more experienced will contribute but I wanted to say welcome and best of luck. It's a great hobby.

Thank you for your comments, I've been looking into a fancy hardback rulebook for a while now, though I am tempted yet again, to just get a Dark Vengence kit, if it comes with a rulebook. As for the Stormraven, no thank you. Not treading that road again.

What do you have against the storm raven? Just curious, since it is far from the most offensive flier in the game.

Welcome Son of Sanguinus.
I have been playing Blood Angels for a LONG time lol. To start out with I would say get 1-2 Death Company Boxes there great for Bitz as well as creating more marines (weather you like assaulty or shooty that all on you friend as well as ground pounders or jumpy) I would also recomend a chaplin. then I would look for Rinoes becouse there fast vehicals. If you are going to buy new models get Razorback Boxes a $1-$4 more but you get a rino with the ability to upgraid it if you so desire
outher than that no rush to get much else I would recomend a Storm Raven but seeing you dont like them so much maby an ADL/Bastion for the AA ability.

If you go on Ebay you can get the small rulebook for only $30.00 from a bitz reseller. Thats what I did. Didn't waste any money on CSM or DA

This. You might not realise, but even the Tactical Marines in the box have Dark Angel markings, meaning you've got some extensive conversion work ahead of you if you want to use them as Knights of Blood.
My suggestion would be to get the rulebook, then play a couple of quick games pitting a unit or two against similar odds. Ignore the Codex completely except for when you need to look at a model or weapon's statistics.
This'll give you a good feel for the basic rules but also on how effective your units are against each other - and Marine players seem to make up a good majority of the playerbase.
Lastly - you seem to be interested in the fluff and background as well, so I'd suggest getting the bigger hardback book. There's plenty of interesting stuff in there to catch up on.

DV would be okay IF you have time, patience and aren't afraid of your X-acto knife. Good looking models, but certainly need work for anything but DA and CSM.
However, if you like fluff then I'd recommend you get the hardback rule book.

Welcome to a fellow BA player!
I brought DV specifically for the marines and mini BRB, its very easy to get rid of the DA logos on the marines, the termies less so. Took me about 2-3 minutes each to tidy the DA logos off the power armoured marines.
but then I swapped the chaos stuff with a freind for his DV marines so I ended up with a lot more.
So far my BA force stands at a decent number of points consdiering I have only been getting them for a few months and my IG is supposed to be my main army!
I would recommend getting some Baal's and Vinidcators myself plus the slightly over-powered Assault terminators.
I never buy the plain-jain Rhino kits, they arent worth the small saving over a Razorback/ Vinidcator / Predator / Whirlwind. All those come with the spare bits you would need to make them ordinary Rhinos anyway, albeit the Pred and Vindi can only be built as such but they still have spare bits in anyway.

I am very interested in getting the bigger, hardback version of the book, and I'm looking at the following for my army. Keep in mind, the reason the list is a bit cumbersome, is due to the fact I have most of these models already.
To answer Regal, I own one, and I'm in the process of trading it. My nephew practically destroyed it, as it was a gift for his BA army, and unhappy with his crap results, returned it to me. Bad experiences all around...
As to Blood Angels brother: Thanks but, I'm not really interested in Death Company yet. I may field one, once I boost this up to 2000-2500. Though, I am a bit unhappy with my list. I wish it was a bit more... assaulty.
Also when I hope to play, I'm not really in it for Cheese armies.
Tactical Squad: 90 points.
Sanguinary Guard with Chapter Banner: 230 points.
(Chapter Master counts as) Gabriel Seth: 160 points.
Furioso Dreadnought with heavy Flamer and a Frag Cannon: 135 Points.
Dreadnought with Autocannon and Blood Fist with Stormbolter: 115 Points. (Could replace with Baal Predator)
Ten-man Tactical 1 with Flamer: 170 Points.
Ten-man Tactical 2: 170 points.
Assault 1 Sergeant has combat shield : 105 points.
Assault 2: 100 points.
Scout 1 with Sniper rifles. 75 points.
Bastion with Quad Cannon: 125 points.
Drop Pod: 35 points.
Drop Pod: 35 points.
This totals up to 1545 points, for a 1550 game.

Sounds like a good force to me and pretty similar to mine, but then I can run a few variationsd on mine apart from assault marines but then I have two squads of assault termies.
