Subject: Daemons vs Imperial Guard - 2,000 points

Tower of Power

Trying out a modified Daemons list tonight. I am playing Croggy, not played against him for a bit, but when we do we always have good games as we both bring tough lists.
As I am using FMCs I hoped Croggy was bringing his Guard, which luckily for me he did, which meant I could see how the FMCs work against flyers.

Game: The Scouring + dawn of war
Warlord Traits: re-roll reserves (Daemons) + night attacker (Guard)
Deployment
Objectives had been placed with each of us putting the objectives 6" from our table edge and along the edge. On my left flank I had a 2 point objective then in the centre the other 2 point and finally on the right flank the 4 point objective. Croggy had the two 3 points objectives opposite my 2 pointers and the 1 point objective pretty much opposite the 4 point.
I won the roll off for table side and Croggy won the roll off for deployment and let me go first.
Croggy deployed across the table spreading his stuff out from left to right; two Griffons on the hill with Platoon spread from left edge to centre, CCS with supporting PCS and plasma Vets, then melta Vets, Warlord CCS, Manticore and lastly the remaining unit of plasma Vets. SWT are in reserve inside the 'Dettas.
* Tactical Notes
Ok, I am going to attack a single flank and roll up the table and mash anything in my way. If I deep strike on the right there's less fire power there and I don't need to worry about the Platoon tying up any of my units.
First drop will be Flamers, Fatey and the Screamers. Flamers will go for plasma units and Screamers can sweep the side armour of Chimeras. Screamers will move flat out to get close to Fatey.
Turn 1
I get my wave I want and drop down three Flamer units by the warlord CCS and supporting melta Vets, one unit of Flamers scatters and goes back in reserve. Screamers deep strike nearby for support. Fatey drops in last (should have done him first) and he scatters and ends up back in reserve.
Shooting; CCS Chimera loses some hull points thanks to Flamers while the melta Chimera is busted and I get first blood. Screamers zoom and all three slice up the CCS Chimera and wreck it.
Croggy moves hit units about so I don't auto hit but nothing significant.
Shooting; Griffons and Manticores bomb Screamers, I think an entire unit is wiped out after fire power from Chimeras and nearby CCS. Flamers get shot at by Platoon and nearby now on foot melta Vets, one unit is gone and another has two dudes left. I think that's about it.
* Tactical Notes
Ok, pretty brutal turn, took it pretty hard as lost as lost a unit of Screamers and unit of Flamers. But I take the rough with the smooth as two Chimeras are gone and I am in a position to nail the warlord.
Next turn I hope I get my Princes in so I can do some damage on the vehicles, particularly the Griffons and Manticores. Screamers will assault nearby plasma Vets and 'wrap' their Chimera so they have to emgerency disembark or are destroyed while other Screamers will slaughter the warlord.
Turn 2
I roll reserves and everything shows up apart from the Masque, unfortunately scatter is bad and every unit scatters, though Plagues land nearby objectives so that's ok but both Princes mishap and go back in reserve. I think Fatey may have landed on target and near the Screamers. Unfortunately the remaining Flamers scatter and mishap, Croggy smartly places bottom right flank corner.
Screamers move to Chimera holding plasma Veterans on the right flank while other unit goes towards the warlord. Depleted Flamers move up to soften the CCS.
Shooting; Fatey takes a hull point off the Manticore and splits fire into the plasma Vets' Chimera - it goes boom and three dudes remain, they pass morale. Flamers bbq some CCS; they pass morale test.
Assault; Flamers and Screamers assault the CCS, only one Flamer remains from overwatch, but CCS is dead. Remaining Veterans are slaughted by Screamers.
Croggy rolls reserves and gets all Vendettas on, one comes on the right flank and two on the left flank.
Again, not a huge amount of movement, Chimeras move to deal with exposed Plaguebearers but that's about it.
Shooting; Plaguebearers on left flank in the shrine ruin come under fire and two remain while ones out in the open near the centre 2 point objective get blasted by Griffons, three remain. Remaining Flamer is slaughtered as is the Screamers who killed the CCS, though other Screamers survive with help from Fateweaver.
* Tactical Notes
Still a brutal turn and I feel I am taking more damage than I can give out. I hope my Princes arrive this turn so I can blast some Vendettas and get myself some extra points. Also, the Flamers scattered which means they are out the picture for a little bit.
Next turn Screamers will tackle the Manticore as everything else is out of range while Fateweaver will start picking on Vendettas.
Turn 3
I roll for reserves and the Masque and a single Prince turn up, the Masque scatters a little bit but the Prince mishaps and Croggy dumps it in the ruin with the 2 point objective on my table side - this way it cannot draw LOS to anything and Croggy has survived another turn of shooting.
Fateweaver flaps about to target the closest Vendetta, though vector strikes the melta Veterans and kills two. Screamers move to attack the Manticore as Plaguebearers reposition and start to claim objectives.
Shooting; Masque bunches up the melta Vets on foot and Fatey blasts them with breath of chaos while taking a hull point off the Vendetta.
Screamers assault and easily destroy the Manticore.
Stunned Vendetta moves towards the Screamers while the one on the right flank moves to support. The other Vendetta drops into hover mode. Chimeras move about but again nothing major.
Shooting; Plaguebearers by the 2 point objective on the right flank and nailed and destroyed. The unit near the Daemon Prince get shot at, though laugh everything off. Vendettas blast the Screamers, two remain if I remember right. I think that's about it.
* Tactical Notes
Still feels like an uphill battle, but I have cleared up a fair amount of Guard. I am hoping my Princes can actually start doing something and tackle some flyers.
Next turn I may send Fateweaver to tackle the hovering Vendetta, but I do not fancy my chances as with smash attacks chicken-man has only got two attacks.
Turn 4
Prince arrives and lands on target.
Fatey stays swooping and moves towards rear of the stunned Vendetta while the other Prince moves out of terrain and gets in the rear of the other Vendetta on the right flank. Screamers move to attack the depleted melta Veterans unit.
Shooting; Fatey takes another hull point from the stunned Vendetta with weapon destroyed result while the Prince blows up a Vendetta.
Assault; Screamers wipe out the remaining Guardsmen.
*At this point we agree to end the game turn 4 due to time.
Guard turn; Chimeras rock up near the objective on my left flank and a unit bails out and moves and runs into terrain, they need to climb one more level to claim it. Vendettas both drop into hover mode and move about while SWT bail out and claim objectives.
Shooting; Fatey gets shot at, though nothing actually scores any wounds. Flamers which have been bouncing up from the bottom left flank after mishap get shot, though they survive. Remaining Screamers go down, I think that's about it.
* Tactical Notes
Ok, it has been a very brutal game and I think I've had it tough with some mishaps and perhaps been on the back foot, but that's how Daemons work; they hit hard and destroy or totally fail. At least I control half the board.
Looking at the situation I have two points for slay the warlord and first blood. I hold an objective with four points and took out a Vendetta, that's seven points. If I can get line breaker, take out both Vendettas and claim the centre 2 point objective I can get 11 points.
Looking at Croggy's situation he has both three point objectives and the one point objective, though I could contest both of these. He is also close to the objective on the left flank, but a Prince and Flamers can easily drop down and take care of those. He has also three points for killing all Screamer units. So Croggy has a total of 9 points so far.
Turn 5
I drop Fatey and both Princes down to swooping, Fatey targets the rear of the one hull point Vendetta, I did forget about the objective but I doubt I could contest it as it was on the top floor and Guardsmen were in the way. Prince on right flank goes towards the SWT on the 1 point objective while the other Prince drops down right by the Veterans on the left flank objective.
Shooting; Prince on the left flank objective burns the Veterans - 7 remain and they pass morale while takes a hull point off one of the Vendettas. Fateweaver splits fire and blasts the two Vendettas in hover mode, breath does nothing while the one with one hull point saves via jink. Remaining Prince blasts the one hull point 'Detta and SWT, the SWT pass morale while the 'Detta saves via jink again, damn!
Assault; Prince goes to assault SWT, takes a wound via overwatch but fails to make it into assault. Other Prince smashes the Veterans by the objective and they are destroyed via sweeping advance.
At this point I have the two point and four point objectives my side giving me six points. I have linebreaker, first blood and slay the warlord which gives me a total of nine points. Croggy holds the two three point objectives, the 1 point objective and also has killed my three Screamer units. That's 10 points and he can also get line breaker too. So, Croggy gets line breaker and picks up the victory.
Summary
That was a really enjoyable game; both forces where knocking seven shades of gak out of each other, Daemons can hit card and tackle Guard easily, but Guard can return with volume of fire power easily.
Some dice rolls didn't go my way, but that's the way it goes. I made a few mistakes with FMCs, but it's the first time using them so things are bound to happen.
About the list; Fatey is too expensive and the re-roll bubble is too small. Sure Fatey helped with the saves, but I used that ability limited times.
Princes are cool, I need more testing with those, though they need gaze instead of breath as flamer templates cannot hit vehicles.
Screamers need to be bulked up into units of six, not sure why, but I feel units of five don't last long, though the sixth Screamer only adds two extra wounds.
Masque I'll probably drop, maybe replace with a fourth Herald or use those points to bulk up the Screamers?
All food for thought!

I've wanted to try out the Masque, but she seems almost like handing your opponent First Blood.

I don't drop the Masque first turn so she never gives first blood; a lot more stuff for target priority. If she does come down first then I drop her out of sight.

Were you using the breath attack versus zooming flyers or were they in hover mode?

I used breath on infantry and on the flyers when they went into hover, however breath is fail because can't hit flyers so I rarely used it.

I'm a little confused, you charged with the screamers on turn one, I thought you couldn't assault off a deep strike...

Screamers have a special attack called Slash Attacks (I believe). It's like Vector Strike in that they can turbo-boost over a unit and inflict damage (S4 hits). Since the chimera had side AV10, it's possible for screamers to wreck it in this fashion.

pow pow massive win for the guard boi . mercer got all pew pew bang bang in yo face mofo...
@kaiservonhugal
Thank you . I've been playing guard for a very very long time now (sarted of with an all foot list full of HB's)
I like my list too . I build all of my lists as all comers tourny lists and this one has served me very well . In fact i cant remember ever losing with this list . The griffons are amazing i used to run 3 manticores but i can get two griffons a manticore a vendetta and sws for around the same points and seeing as i found the manticore was mainly shooting at deminished squads or low av vehicles i thought sod it accurate bombardment griffons are better . they die the same but the can shoot more shots more accurately , have the same ap as a manticore and still wound most troops on a two, plus two dice and pick the highest on armour pen usually ends up as bye bye hull point but the absolute best thing is pin pointing those speshial weapens out of a squad or killing that ork dude in a grot squad and watching them run of a home objective the fact that it has something like a 55% chance of getting a hit is fab (ill let you check the maths im just guessing)
anyway was a great game against a bloody tough list and a good opponent cheers mercer

Happy to see IG pull it out against Demons but I understood the rules to require that all or none of an infantry platoon be put in reserves. I'd be happy to be wrong on this but that's how we've always played it.
