Maybe use a charcoal color or something dark, but not black. That will help you make the recesses in clothe black with shade, and almost create a highlight towards the higher surfaces. Once you get that accomplished you can take a dark grey and do highlights at the edge of the cloth. I'm not sure how this will look or end result, but its probably the route I would take.

I used vallejo heavy charcoal for my chaplain's armour, once it's washed and given another highlight it looks decent as black armour. I imagine it would work well for cloth too.

Im not the greatest painter in the world, but I just tried something out recently on my Neophytes. Theyve been black armor black clothes for a while, but I just painted up their legs and sleeves in dark gray and washed em down with Nuln Oil. It gave a really nice effect to offset the uniform outfit from the armor, letting the gray highlights stand out while the black wash settles into the recesses.

I use black, with a small amount of blue in it for base coat,

then slowly add more white/blue to highlight,

thenk nuln oild to fill the crevases

thanks

Differentiating between black cloth and metal is an exercise in 'TEMPERATURE CONTRAST'. Caps to indicate it's a long, long subject to discuss.

This boils down to (at simplest) using cool or neutral (bluish / grey) highlighting on metals, plastic, ceramics and warm (yellow / red / tan) on cloth. Try mixing your highlights with a flesh tone to get a warmer grey.

This should help.

Just replace the paints in the video with the ones you have.
