Hey everyone, tonight my girlfriend (who I am trying to introduce to miniature gaming) and I went to a LGS, and poked around the malifaux section. Well, we both picked out some stuff, and plan on attempting to learn how to play in the next week or two. I'm slightly curious, mainly if the things we picked up are worth it.
 I got:
 Arcanist Rail Crew
 Metal Gamin
 Willie the Demolitionist

 She got:
 Neverborn Dark Debts Crew
 Depleted
 Mr. Graves

I know, it's all the plastic stuff. The reason for that is because I honestly don't feel like priming metal in sub-freezing temperatures... We were also looking at some of the other stuff, namely the Rail Golem, the Beckoners, and Mr. Tannen.

If anyone has any opinions/advice, and input on what we picked up, she and I would greatly appreciate it!

 Thanks,
 B

									Have a look at pullmyfinger.com
its a great resource for tactics, crew building and how to play.

Personally i don't have the crews myself. So i cant comment on if they are good to start with.

Also dont get overwhelmed with the rules. They are pretty simple to pick up once you start playing. What the wife and I are doing, is we played a single turn the first time, and went step by step to see what we had to do to play. Then we played a few turns and now we are about to finish a full game. We are in all honesty, on our 3rd time playing this game, and we can cruise through most of the actions with no problems and little rules checks. Also in this full fledged match, we are using a few more involved rules and general actions and so on we its not such a load to take.

Enjoy though, the wife and I are REALLY digging this game, its a blast to play

Some tips for the wife (since I play Jakob Lynch pretty regularly)
Beckoners are fantastic, their ability to lure people in close, give them brilliance, and then keep brilliance on models with it that are within 6 inches of them is FANTASTIC!

Depeleted are great cause they give wounds to HuggyD (Hungering Darkness), they're hard to wound and what not.

My standard 35ss list is roughly:

  Jakob Lynch
  HuggyD
  2 Beckoners
  2 Depleted
  1 Illuminated
  Mr. Graves

That's staying within his stuff, I like to add a Stitched Together if I can, maybe taking Graves out.

Avoid Tannen, he's crap atm ... Just not a good piece on the board, but he's a cool little mini..

As to what the other posters said, checkout pullmyfinger it's the malifaux tactica site, it's always being updated, and like KC said... don't get overwhelmed with the rules.

Learn the basics between an opposed duel and a simple duel, the number of activations a model gets a turn, combat total modifiers, etc..

I also suggest printing out a few of these and laminating them:

I will add to Alf's post with some advice for the Rail crew. Grab the Rail Golem first thing, as he works really really well with Mei Feng. He is a big hitter for the crew and you will be happy you grabbed him.
Past that, I suggest using the Rail Crew as Arcanists to start. Mei Feng is a dual faction master, so can be played in 2 different factions (Arcanist and Ten Thunders). She will have more toys to play with currently as you expand in the Arcanists. When your ready to expand, I suggest looking at either the Outcast model Johan (he is a mercanary so Mei can hire him) and/or looking at the Large Steampunk Arachnids. The Large Spider is tough to build, but a really good model to use with Mei.

I checked out PMF last night, and it wouldn't work on mobile, but now it is... Huh. It seems pretty informative, but I've got another question, are minions master-specific? I know the totems are, but I'm not sure about them.

Many masters have Hiring Restrictions or [Special Forces] , which restricts your hiring habits. Like Kirai has a hiring restriction that basically makes it so she can ONLY hire spirits. She has the [Detached] ability that restricts any non-spirit model to Rare 1 (so you can only ever have 1 of that model).

Ophelia has [Special Forces: Kin], Perdita has [Special Forces: Family], etc... Unless a Minion or the master has Special Forces then you can hire them.

Most minions can be used by most Masters and some can evenbe used across factions. But there are some Masters/Henchman who can only take certain types of minions.
I play Resurrectionists and if I choose to have Molly lead my crew she can only hire "Horrors, Belles and Totems" which limits her choices some what. But this is clearly stated on her card.

There are other limitations where the Special Forces (SF ) are concerned. If you a Master who isn't SF then you may only hire 2 SF models (but must be limited to 1 type of SF i.e. Horror or Friekcorps). If your Master is part of SF then the 2 model limit is ignored but you may still only take SF from 1 type.

This said, you will find that you will want to take the minions who are themed with your Master as they usually have tricks/abilitys to add bonuses to your minions. E.g. Seamus has plenty of tricks with his Rotten Belles but non with Onyro spirit!

Hope that makes sense! Ninja'd by the Master!

  Zing!

Thanks for the advice, I'll have to look at the cards when they come in tomorrow.

I love how you can get all of the Malifaux stuff on eBay for 30-40% off, it doesn't sting like GW products

I haven't checked amazon, but I managed to snag both of the crew boxes for $45 total, and the minions for not much more than that on ebay

I think I'm going to slowly pick up everything that comes out plastic-wise, I showed it to some friends (that don't play any miniature games) and they are interested.
I'm definitely going to pick up the resurrectionist crew kit when it comes out next month (Izamu is a beautiful kit), and I might pick up the Ten Thunders crew as well.

Yea, this game seems to appeal to a much broader range of people then Im used to (being a former 40k player) Hell my brother the Giant and his wife seem pretty interested and they do not play miniatures style games. But I told him it reminds me of playing chess, because you dont move 1 at a time, youre really, in your head, moving 4 or 5 at a time getting that strategy going. Well hes a big fan of chess, so that grabbed his interest real quick

Masters of the Pan (Yan Lo's Box), and Izamu are both out and available in your FLGS . Wyrd gives about a 2 week period between street release and website release. So the FLGS almost always get it before Wyrd does, barring some odd circumstances.
