Hey Dakka,

Pretty much on here to vent my frustration on a sympathy-garnering forum post rather than get all indignant at people who 'don't know any better' (namely the culprit).

Anyway, after I moved out my parents' house they understandably wanted to sort out what I had left... I've just been going through my Warhammer storage looking for Space Marine bitz and came upon a large tupperware tub that my IG infantry were kept in (they're fairly resilient).

Inside, I find pretty much every model I had left loose around my room (on shelves, on the table, etc.) literally crammed in there... Whilst most of the 28mm stuff was okay, I'm quite distraught by what's become of my 1/72 stuff...

-Jeeps that cost me up to a tenner each are bent, with wheels missing.... one Jeep isn't accounted for.

-Infantry are broken off of sprues, bitz are all over the place.

-My AT Guns have got broken carriages, bent guns.

-Snapped off bases galore...

-Pewter Predator (the film alien) broken

Granted the house should be kept clear but to stare at hours of your painting time in a condensed mess... I think my heart is breaking.

E-hug me, Dakka...

Aww...

Although really, you should have asked them to be careful.

I thought this would be a Necron/Grey Knights hate-thread.

My sympathies for you, man. I had a fully painted Circle Orboros army that somehow left their safe shelf and hit the floor. They did not "break" per say, but the pieces came apart and the paint chipped. Badly. And that was it for me. I chucked 'em in a box in the basement where they have remained, and I don't have any plans on fixing them any time soon.

Ditto

Had a similar experience with some marines when I moved to college, so I understand your pain. My sympathies to you and your minis.

My folks have managed to 'misplace' my Realm Of Chaos set, hardback Rogue Trader rulebook, a whole bunch (almost complete set) of 2nd edition codexes, 40k Compilation and Compendium (the red one and the yellow one) and my old WHFRPG rulebook. Despite having plenty of room at their house and being fine with me keeping it there.

I feel your pain.

I respond in the typical ungrateful child fashion:

'You say it's still my room and nobody goes in there - so what does it matter if boxes are lying around?'

It does appear that it was an exercise in consolidation... sort of logical I suppose, if you can't understand that stuff is kept in separate boxes to keep them, well, separate...

When I moved out, I packed all of my "toys" away in a storage closet where they would be safe. I came back to get all of that stuff 5 years later with intent to put it in safe storage in my place until I either gave it all to my kids, or sold it all as collectors items.
My dad had tossed it all in the dump about a year prior. All of it. Every scrap.
This was 1989.
I priced it all out on ebay recently. Average price of the collection based on successful ebay transactions?

E-Hug incoming, that is brutal.

I had a similar experience-my Shadowsword somehow managed to shed its sponsons and fore right tracks and wheel. Only after many months have i plucked up the courage to repair it.

I know that feel bro...

If it makes you feel any better to hear another person's story of woe:

Was playing at my FLGS - guy walks in with two boxes and says the son is off to Uni so he cleaned up all his crap and wanted to sell it to the store for $100. Inside the first box is a couple hundred dollars worth of RPG books - in the second is two large 40k armies and a box of Magic cards... Full set of Dual lands, tons of Arabian nights, Legends etc. Thousands of dollars of hobby stuff pawned for $100.

Yeah, a sure fire way to kill your collection is to let someone who doesn't know the hobby to touch or pack your miniatures away.

When I moved out of home I couldn't bring a lot of my miniatures with me so I cleared them all off and packed them away myself.

My Mum isn't a heavy handed cleaner or anything, but she just doesn't know what is valuable and what isn't and what is delicate and what isn't. One time she cleared my work area and some constructed and painted miniatures were stacked such they could easily scratch on each other... while some random small bits with little value and which aren't delicate were carefully laid out to not touch each other, lol. She knows that she doesn't know what's what so just prefers if I don't leave things out for her to have to clean up.

When my Dad was young he used to collect model aircraft, and when he moved out his Mum just threw them all out

I've been on both sides of this fence.

I left a dresser full of clothes behind when I moved out. Dad helpfully dropped them all off at a cleaners and told me where I could pick them up. The walls to "my" room were subsequently demolished to expand the dining room. I'm pretty sure they were making a point that moving back was not an option.

As a father I have spent way too much time helping my kids clean up "their" rooms. You can be sure that the day they move out they better take everything with them.

I feel bad for you, but man up at put your big boy pants on. If your old enough to move out, you should not be relying on your parents to clean up after you. Be glad they didn't pitch it or sell it in a garage sale. Your landlord won't be so nice if you leave something behind, they will charge you to through your stuff away. Here's some advice. Think how many hours did you spend painting all those minis, but have you got anything protecting them? Spending a hundred bucks on a few cases me seem like a lot, but consider how much time and effort you are saving yourself in case something happens. It always does.

I didn't mean to come across as a jerk. I am just tired of some people who say they are adults, and then act like 5 year olds. Learn from your experience.

My broken model stories start with:

My dog ate.....

Seriously. My dog chewed up one of the few of my fully painted space marines. I was mad.

Then I noticed one of my basecoated Kromlech dozer blades was missing.... He chewed it to bits. Now that is resin and I was scared to death that he had swallowed some of it and might get sick. But he didn't. Still I had to spend money to buy another set of dozer blades just to use ONE of them. So now I have a lonely dozer blade that will never be used.

Now I am careful to keep all models out of his reach.

Too bad. He might have learned a lesson. Dogs are funny like that.

Ha I've got two good one's. One buddy ticked off his girlfriend, and came home to find she had fed his entire custom sculpted Slaanesh army down the food disposal unit.

Another came home to find his huge Ork army, and his entire collection aside from his necron army he had in his trunk strewn about the lawn, having been thrown out there and mowed with a landmower by his now ex-wife.
