i posted along time ago an idea to use a bare bones necron court as a counter assault unit.
With the introduction of disco court inferno as a possible fun army list i wanted to post another strategy I found worked well.
This unit is kept at a minimum cost level in order to avoid a total deathstar feel.
I have played this unit twice to great avail,it is great at scoring first blood and also linebreaker.
Zahndrekh-185

Vargard-160

Total unit cost:550
Total strategy cost:815
In order to avoid mishaps, zahndrekh drives forward his 12", and the vargard court teleports 6" in front of him.
This grants the squads 30 str 5 ap 3 shots an effective range of 30",not bad at all.In practice on the battlefield, this unit decimates anything other than 2+ save models.I have murdered entire space marine units in one volley.
Pros:
4+/3+ armour
Majority 5 toughness
Unit consists entirely of characters who can snipe other characters on a 6 for slay the warlord bonus
Is reasonably priced compared to TH/SS termies joined by a character
Can counter assault thanks to MSS and vargard
Ever-living means the entirety of the unit can die if focussed and still retain a 50% chance of getting back up
Super annoying to have knocking at your front lines,as it ensures a large portion of the enemy units are focussing fire.
Zahndrekh can join the unit or continue to run (drive if chariot is still up) and provide the free deep strike bubble.
Zahndrekh grants USR's.
Cons:
Big points investment
Lack of good armour saves
A bullet magnet
An assault magnet
Obviously there are many variations on the unit, even dropping zahndrekh and vargard and risking mishap with a regular veiltek, or just throwing them into a ghost ark or another transport.
So far i found this way works best for me.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Forgot to mention i run 2 of these at once at 1850, very scary.
