Subject: 1500 - Deathwing vs Blood Angels!!! (With pics)
Hey guys, this is my first bat rep, so be nice However would like lots of c&c's to how I can make it better and tactics for the game. Todays game was between me trying out the new dark angels, vs fellow dakka member WarpAngels who will be trying a drop podding blood angels list. This is the first time I have played this armies, (I normally play grey knights) so sorry if there are a few mistakes. In general this was just a casual game to try out new things. I hope you enjoy Also major credit to Jy2 as I kinda stole his layout for bat-reps, hope you dont mind
Armies in my group include, Grey Knights, Blood Angels, Chaos, Guard, Eldar, Necrons, Tau, so if you want to see any particular match up, then let me know
I castle up my vindicators in a corner and spread out two squads with plasma cannons at the front to try and protect them from drop-podding dreads and melta guns. Belial goes with the command squad in deathwing assault, along with the assault cannon squad. They will come in turn 2.
He deploys his two attack bikes behind cover, and his raider in view of my army, their will be no subtlety here as his aim will be to get the deathcompany in combat as soon as possible.
Night-fighting: No
Warlord Traits: Blood angels: Personal, scoring (this will be very important late in game )
Deathwing: Personal, furious charge in enemy deployment
Deathwing castle up (sorry for blur picture ) the two quad guns are the objectives
Nothing happens, I move some guys around and prepare for the incoming assault, raider is out of range of vinicators, plasma cant hurt it
Blood AngelsTurn 1

He chooses both his dreads to drop pod assault, leaving the sternguard behind, they both land right on top of my guys and the dreads get ready to melt some tanks. The right vindi gets immobalised, but the left one survives the attack, snapfireing drop-pods kill a terminator (story for the night, me failing 2+ saves )
His attack bikes turbo boost for cover, raider moves up 6 inch
Overall, Im down one terminator, but still have both my tanks, I got off quite well in the end.
Deathwing Turn 2

Belials squad land right on the board edge, hoping to rear armour a dreadnought with cyclone, and pick of some attack bikes. The cyclone split fires, and score a weapon destroyed on the furioso, the bolters shoot at an attack bike but he makes his saves, at the moment Im clutching at straws trying to get first blood.
The other squad lands on target the other side of the attack bikes, I shoot the bike with everything bit only score a single wound
Finally my left vindicator shoots the raider, causing it to explode and giving me First Blood 2 deathcompany die in the inferno
Finally, my termie squad on the right assaults the death company dread. My storm shield sergeant dies to an overwatch melta-gun , and one deathwing dies on combat, In return I put two penetrating hits on the dread, and immobilize it.
Blood Angels Turn 2

Sternguard drop right on belial, I hope he scatters of the board, but he falls just short, this might hurt a little bit.
Both attack bikes turn round and move up on the other deathwing squad that came in last turn
Shooting, furioso does not give the vindicator a second chance and explodes it.
Sternguard, rapid fire 8 plasma shots, and fire 6 melta shots into my command squad, I loose 2 deathwing and he loses 1 guy to gets hot. Else where, another terminator gets killed by a drop-pod (those pods), and 1 terminator dies to the melta attack bikes.
In the assault phase, death-company declare a charge, 1 dies to overwatch and then they fail the charge. Bikes charge terminators, but get wiped out. The death company dread kills another terminator, but loses its last hull points, and explodes, leaving the deathwing to consolidate.
Bottom of turn 2, termies in top left are free to move after wiping out attack bikes, belials squad readies to charge sternguard, deathcompany close in
Deathwing Turn 3
Spoiler:
Most squads move a little, my deathwing in my deployment after killing the death company dread, move in on the other and prepare to take it out.
Shooting kills 3 sternguard and 1 death company
Belials squad then charges the sternguard, Belial kills 3 and the boys mop up the rest
I then consolidate 6 back to my deployment
Blood Angels Turn 3
Spoiler:
Death company move in on terminators, hopefully taking them away from the objectives.
Shooting does nothing, so to the assault phase.
Dread charges the two terminators (they failed their charge last time) and kills both. It then consolidates to hide behind the vindicator.
Death company charge terminators, one dies to overwatch.

2 death company and reclusiarch remain

Not much left, I kill a death company from shooting, belials squad charges a drop pod as I am fed up of loosing guys to these things, I blow it up and one termie dies in the explosion

Death company move into the building and hug wall next to objective.
Furioso wrecks the vindicator

Deathwing Turn 5

One squad runs to the other objective, and hold it.
Belials squad moves up on death company, and charges. Here I make 3 mistakes.
Mistake number 1, I am now 4-3 up on points, all I have to do is hold the objective with a 3 man squad to win.
Mistake number 2, his reclusiarch challenges and I accept with belial.
The two deathwing kill the last deathcompany, but he kills both with his power axe as I fail both Invuns.
Belial puts a wound on the recusiarch, but then gets insta killes by the power fist. (Im used to playing draigo wing and completly forgot about no eternal warrior on belial )
My opponent then gets warlord, and his Hq moves to take the other objective
Final result, 4 victory points each, Draw!!!

Ok so was my first time at deathwing, and kind of took lots of stuff thinking oh shinny but not thinking about it. The standard of fortitude was in the end a waste as I deepstrikes belials squad so far away to try and kill one of the dreads. I took two vindis as I cant get them in grey knights and wanted to use them for the first time, I heard they are always better in pairs. Killing a raider with one was a bonus and provided a distraction if anything.
Overall, I played well, up until the end. If I just moved belials squad away. I would have won 4-3. My main army is draigo-wing, so am used to having a beat stick character, unfortunately this was not the case. I'm wondering if th & ss is a better way to run him, as a 5+ precision shot on a storm bolter is not really much.
I quite like the new dark angels, but am going to try out a more dual wing list before deciding if I want to commit to them.
This was my first game against the new DA dex, and it was really good.
I took DC as my troops because it was a fun game, but next time i might take atleast one scoring troops
I think the game went well in the end although i think i should have podded in the Sterns instead of the Furioso and combat squaded to kill a unit of termies and a vindi, also would have moved the bikes straight in rather than around, and also hugged cover abit better with the land raider....
But in the end all went well-ish, lost all my units except the HQ and furioso, but still made a draw so cant complain

Good report, I really enjoyed it. The lack of EW on Belial has caught me out before too! I need to start putting up some of my bat reps.
Dual wing is definitely the way to go. Im now even starting to use Tri-Wing (what I call Deathwing, Ravenwing and Greenwing lists) and its working pretty well.
In my upcoming 2500pt game Im going to be running Greenwing with an ADL with Quad Gun for some scout snipers, have 2 small combat squads with Plasma's and a Predator. Then the rest will be Ravenwing attack sqauds with Landspeeder Typhoons, my Nephilim (just because I love the models), Deathwing Knights, Assault Termies and Belial and Ezekiel. I am going to try and get this one written up and reported properly!

Awesome battle rep, im really itching to play against the new DA codex myself. Deathwing are no where near as durable as paladins and Belial not having eternal warrior is a downside for sure but their ability to take much more makes them a good match. Look forward to the next one.

Belial seems way to easy to kill, or maybe I'm to use to draigo.
I dont know why you wont put hammer and shield on him now. Makes him more survivable and hit harder. Whats the point of 5+ precision on a storm bolter, and the blade being ap3 does not really help.
I mostly play at 1500 but am now thinking just a 10 man deathwing with belial and a level 2 libby in termie armour deathstar. 5 man scout squad with cloaks for objectives and then just lots of bikes.

I used to run Draigowing and Deathwing in 5th Edition and I think that the 60 point increase in Belial's point cost is a bit over-the-top. When you invest so many points into an assault character I think anyone would expect a little bit more out of them (for just 10 points more you can get Mordrak)!
To make matters worse, Belial is now no longer in a troop choice of terminators, but in a command squad! I think in all situations that really hurts Deathwing (with the old codex you could have the apothecary in a troop terminator squad). To top it all off, unless they FAQ the codex (and they should) you can't even put you whole army in reserve anymore : (
I might be mistaken, but in 5th edition dual wing was so bad it was almost unplayable, but now dual wing seems the way to go while pure Deathwing has become a bit weaker.

What do you mean by, Belial is now no longer in a troop choice? He is an independent character, so you can attach him to any squad in your army, even one that is not in TDA (although naturally that means he cannot deepstrike.) There's nothing obligatory about having to take a command squad, unless you want an apothecary or standard bearer.

For belial he's reasonably durable, but then he's no draigo. That guy takes a bit to knock down.
And finally... New Zealand? Oh yeah...
We are both heading to equinox next month if you are coming along, should be a great tournament.
Im giving the angels a rest and playing my grey knights alot now in preparation, they suit my style better than deathwing, but my next plan is to try a more dualwing army.
And I know, but what can I say, my chances of victory depend on how manys 1's I roll haha

Just got ninja'd, Belial must take the hunt. As for giving him TH/SS, it's not that huge of a boost I've found. He's not a beatstick character, you'll get used to it. (funny since his warlord trait makes you tempted to use him as one)
Stock: bolter, mastercrafted power sword with fleshbane, 4 + invul (iron halo)
TH/SS: no potential sniping, strikes last (but AP2) and a 3+ invul.
