After reading there fluff i find them very, very lacking in epicness. There stat line is while not abismal, doesnt do them justice. So i was thinking that insted of them being squad leaders we do a sanguary priest/haemonculi kinda deal in the fact they would be 3 per HQ choice, not only making an ulthwe army effective and powerful but to give the option of having a warlock lead an army. SOmething which i always wanted. First off lets start with the statline i would give them.
Ws Bs S T W I A Ld Save
5 4 3 3 2 5 2 10 4++

Major difference is the extra wound, the WS, I and A. This is to make them worth a dam in combat rather then marines which wound on 2's.The idea behind leadership 10 is because...I want to make them mastery level 1 psykers *gasp*. They would have access to pyromancy and telekenisis, making them mainly offensive casters like they should be. The idea behind this is that it says that the warlock can match other races psykers arcainly (greyknights, Primiras all level 1) and beat them in combat (hence WS 5). Of course all this comes at a price, since he is the same level as a farseer base and a better fighter im loathed to make him over expensive. I was thinking around 65pts because while he comes with a lot base, he wouldn't upgrade much unlike the farseer and he lacks runes and ghosthelm. He would of course keep the jetbike option.

He would have access to buy a singing spear, which i am re-doing for 15 pts.

Singing spear. melee +2 str Ap 4 armourbane.
12" 5 4 armourbane.
I am doing this because i dont like how a spear can put a landraider on a kabab so dam easily. This way its still a major threat to light/heavy vehicals but needs to work hard to pen a landraider. Also the +2 str is to help armourbane, and i carnt see it with fleshbane as well, but to boast it differently to the witchblade i added AP which eats through xenos armies. I was also thinking of adding special warlock powers as well as the level 1 psyker powers which are always on. Such as a rune to add counterattack to the unit or FC, or even fearless!

Thoughts?

Edit. He would also keep the option of being the farseers escort, but he would lose the look out sir ability. He would be perchased at the same cost in a unit of 2-8. Thats one really psykicicky deathstar!

I like the entry, however I think a warlock should be relatively cheap. Considering the DA librarian is the same price with extra strength, toughness, power armor and force weapon and the only thing the warlock has over him is an invuln. I'd say at least a 10 point decrease is a fair price. This also keeps a seer council from being a 500+ point unit. Otherwise I think it's a great idea.

Thanks for the reply (was wishing for more tho ) and i see the example of the Librarian, but im trying to go for internal balance first. He should be at least seer price because while he is a better fighter base and the same level he does lose out on a wound (and divination!).

I do think i could go down to 55, but i think then he'd be compaired to the seer a lot, when they are different units. Would only 50 pts be undercosted?

Also what do people think of the lores? I dont think they should have access to divination and pyromancy makes sense with the primiras power being basically destructor. I thought of telekenisis because of the DoW2 warp throw ability and its a pritty offensive lore, but both have a 2 warp charge power which the lock carn't use.

Last thing, what about the spear? Would you be happy about losing the super cheap str9, but dont kid yourself. There is no way the next codex wouldn't fix that anyway.

First step is to make the Warlock an actual Psycher. I wouldn't flinch at giving him the same access to psychic powers as a Farseer, although possibly replace Divination with something more warlike (Telekinesis or Pyromancy). The Farseer should be ML2 to ML3 while the Warlock ML1 with no further upgrade.

Second I'd like to see them reduced in potential numbers but increased in army distribution. Here's a few concrete suggestions:
1. Wolf Guard mechanic. Slot them in as an Elite choice. Remove any number of Warlocks and assign to any similarly equipped Guardian or Aspect unit and have the Warlock be a model part of that unit for all intents and purposes. Use "he's trained as a Striking Scorpion and is able to use their combat techniques" excuse for fluff.
Naturally one of the melee aspects need to move to Troop in order to keep codex internal balance.
2. Necron court mechanic. I hate tying them to Farseers, I really do. This is essentially what you described.
3. Space Wolf pet dog. Warlocks remain unit upgrades for Guardians, but Farseers may take up to two as Wargear. These act as normal models, but does not hinder the Farseer from joining a unit although they do make the Farseer very "bulky" for transport purposes.

Personally I think a 1 wound model is more than sufficient since it's not an actual HQ, however. I'd keep his profile at Aspect Warrior levels, but higher LD. Not fond of having a lot of heroes running around, since if the Warlock would deserve 2W and such an impressive profile, then the Exarchs deserve more than that!

I do not see a problem having a huge potential number of Eldar Warlocks in an army, even if they are full blown psychers, but I think that if you want someone who can hold his own against beat-stick characters you should look to the Autarch or possibly a Xentarch (which I present to you as the natural step between extremely competent demi-mortal that is Exarch and the nearly-a-god-in-his-own-right that is the Phoenix Lord - incidentally, shooting aspect Phoenix Lords are marked down as being slightly superior in melee combat to daemon princes of the nastier sort)

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.
