I have a box of Lychguard coming my way (delivery in transit) and I need to make some Cryptek Harbingers with 4 of them. For the 5th one, I was thinking about making a converted Overlord. Easy enough, give him some fancy pants armor and a warscythe, and call it a day. But I was thinking about Blood Angels and the Sanguinary Guard, and I thought, what if a Necron Overlord wanted to graft on some thing wing-ish. What would that look like?

And so I began to think about the Lychguard Dispersion Shields and thought that those might make excellent Living Metal wings. (Note: I'm not trying to model an Overlord to be jump infantry, I'm just going for the rule of cool and trying to make an Overlord that has some "extended" decorative armor plating.)

Dispersion Shields:
Spoiler:

Here are my ideas:

(1)
Typical "wings"... looking at the shield image, the top is the shorter side and the bottom is the longer side. Attach to back at the short side. Angle up about 45 degrees so the longer side is pointing up.

(2)
Cut the shield in half from top to bottom, right down the middle. There are 5 in the kit, so that would give me 5 "left" segments and 5 "right" segments. Stack the "left" segments together like layered feathers, and do the same for the "right". And then attach them to the back like a pair of wings.

(3)
Similar to #1, cut the shield in half from top to bottom down the middle, and also cut horizontally right across the circle at the widest point, to give me quarters. Now I can use the smaller quarters to use as upper wing feather segments and the longer quarters to us a lower wing long feather segments.

What do you think of these ideas? Or do you have any suggestions on a different idea?

This is just my personal opinion but most conversions I've seen using the shields just look kinda tacky / obtrusive. A lot of times when people cut them up / just stick them on it doesn't look like a conversion, it just looks like a shield in a different place. If you definitely want to make wings out of the shields, I think I would do something like cut them very carefully like this:

Are there any particular items you're trying to equip your overlord with? The praetorian/lychguard kit is great to make conversions out of (I too made most of my crypteks from that kit).

Stacking bits usually seems to revolve around the resulting thickness. I think I would have come to the same conclusion you are suggesting, in using only the "edge" bits of the shield. I think I'm leaning towards cutting off the four "edge" pieces like that and seeing what kind of wing shape I can come up with.

As far as the particulars for overlord equipment that I plan on making... first off, I plan on magnetizing so that I can have multiple options. I believe that I'll need at least a Warscythe, but I'd like to be able to have a dynamic pose (maybe two-handed, mid swing). The other Harbinger parts that I plan on making are for several Voltaic Staves and several Eldritch Staves.

I do have an idea for the Eldritch Staff. I have some Deathmark Disintegrators and I'd like to add some staff bits to them and make an Eldritch Staff that's more like a sniper rifle. (Something like Star Gate with a Jaffa Staff Weapon.)

For the Voltaic Staff, I'll probably just wait to see what else I can imagine out of the components in the box. (Unless you've got any ideas for me.)

I'm open to ideas and suggestions

(Also, when I get home, I'm going to take the shield edge bits into photoshop and see what kind of orientation I can come up with.)

How about cutting off the thinner pointy bits off as many shields as possible and giving him wings like a Seraphim?

That's the direction I'm thinking. I'm going to photoshop it up and see what I can make of it.

Here's the ideas I've got so far:

idea 2

Every other idea I try to shape together doesn't quite look wing shaped.

Comments?
Alternative ideas?
