Well, I was out at my local hobby shop the other day ( "local" I have to drive for an hour to get to the nearest one...) While there I spotted a Trygon/Mawloc kit, I had a stroke of inspiration so I decided I'd try to make this model into my very own Parasite of Mortrex.
Upon opening it up and setting up the build I started to have second thoughts, while the trygon/mawloc may not be the best thing to take in a serious capacity, I do still like the way they look and would like to field one in games with friends. So I decided to compromise, and after many hours of cutting, magnetizing and Green Stuff...ing. Here is my compromise:
Magnetized parts:
Three carapace tops for the head
Three tail ends
Two lower jaws
Three sets of mandibles
All five sets of scything talons
Two wings
Optional magnetized bits I noticed afterwards: (Maybe next time)
Carapace chest plates x3 (Fairly light with a very nice spot to sit, would most likely need to shave right about where the bump is to make it sit flat, while drilling a small hole in the chest to mount the magnet flush with the rest)
Bonus feeler bits for the back of the Mawloc x 5 (They are light, and with a quick snip, a smaller magnet size, a bit of green stuff and magnets inside the carapace, doubt you'd need holes, they should be a nice bonus)
Carapace "crotch" plate x2 (Hollow parts that would only need minor work to add a magnet to at all, and it could be a very small one as it would allow for direct contact)
Extra small claw sets for chest x5 (Same as the feeler bits, but it would allow them to be turned and you could mount some at different angles to allow for better scything talon movement/position
So far, I'm... fine with how it turned out. There are a few more things I need to fix, re-green stuff some of the arms to get them at the right angles again, but my big issue here is the wings!
Here is my problem: I am having a hard time getting the wings to stay up on the model. My only idea was to add green stuff to make a support on the back shown here:
The wings are just left-overs from my Swarmlord and the magnets I used are 3/16th x 1/16th attached with green stuff, magnets exposed for magnet to magnet contact. They are rare earth magnets, not sure if samarium-cobalt or neodymium, but I'd hope my hobby shop wouldn't sell me high heat resistant magnets so I'm fairly sure they are neodymium.
Any other ideas on how to get the wings to not droop down? I'm not entirely happy with the green stuff, and I'm certainly not very artistic so they look out of place. I've only just started playing again and this is the third model I've built in over 10 years, my first two being Tervigons (magnetizing nightmare! Still a work in progress one is just going to be a tervigon while the other will have the option for tyrannofex or tervigon with crusher claws/scything talons just in case!) Any and all help appreciated. Or at the very least, let me know what you think!
Also, I know it's supposed to be a flyer, but I don't have a clue how to mount it "in the air," yet still be interchangeable to become a trygon/mawloc. If you have any suggestions for mounting it as "flying" with magnets I'm open to all ideas, I just thought it might look weird if it were on a large clear plastic pedestal with a coiled tail and I've burned up my creativity for the week already...
