Sounds dumb right? Ok I finally won a best painted awhile back and now I want to one up myself. When I go to GT's I'm always amazed at the awesome army idea's I see there. A fine example was an army of Tyranids all mixed with Tau bits. The paint was excellent, and the display board was friggin' awesome. I just never seem to come up with any gnarly ideas such as that.

So gimme your crazy army idea's. This is a start from scratch no holes barred any army in the game. Except sisters because if GW thinks I'm shelling out that much moola for blister packs of 3 sisters at a time they're 'nuckin 'futz.

Rogue Traders. They're pretty much the only humans with true freedom, since the Emperor granted them permission to travel the galaxy and interact with alien races. You can put Tau (includes the Kroot of course) and freebooter Orks, pretty much anyone who isn't totally evil or totally good in it. Would probably have to count as an IG army. Make sure to deck them out with cloaks, gold chains, etc. This picture should help.

EDIT: You could also do WAAAGH! Tuska, or the short story in the Orks codex called "Tuska the Daemon-Killa." It's a pretty cool story, there might be a PDF somewhere.

Wow fast responses. Some good ideas. Some are not feasable since you can't do a all kroot army, or an all ogryn/ratling army.

I especially like the Rogue Trader army, and plague nids idea. The rogue AI Tau army is cool too but I just don't know about vehicles as monstrous creatures.

It's definitely fueling the brain fire.

Use CREEED! powers for the tau. They'll have drone-scrawled squiggoths and carnifexes on them. No one will ever know..

'Mixing' two armies does seem a good idea - it gives a unique fluff angle, plus is actually playable in 6th Ed.

Some possibilities:
- Orks and Tau, with the Tau modelled as Orky equivalents, or the Orks modelled as mercenaries working for the Tau
- Chaos plus almost anyone, representing a non-chaos force having been seduced/corrupted but so far still retaining most of their old attributes
- Tyranids plus almost anyone, representing some sort of genestealer cult equivalent

Or sticking with a single codex, how about a forgeworld invasion army - brand newimperial equipment, in some cases so new it hasn't even been painted or fully assembled on the factory floors, desperately manned by civilian workers?

I'd recommend going for pure fluffy armies as the most satisfying projects - you can always add more competitive selections later.
If i may share my current and planned projects. For example..

I'm currently working an ultramarine bike force (which will probably get shredded by the new chaos and dark angel codices), but using bits from EVERY compatible kit - BT, BA, GK, DA, CSM, SW. It's expensive and slow-going but if you like space marines as i do, it's incredibly satisfying piecing together 40+ individual characters - every model can be entirely unique or only slightly varied with a twist or turn, head-swap or different sidearm.

My next project (which I'm trying to restrain my excitement and impatience for) is an inquisition force with henchmen. I really want to get stuck into the gothic character of the 40kverse and john blanche's articles in WD have really captured my interest. I'm thinking it will be based on coteaz but radical with kroot mercenaries, eldar or dark eldar pirates, chained and bound psykers as well as daemon hosts. Hopefully I'll be adding a small allied IG force made up of veterans in a vendetta - repurposed in inquisition colours, and a deathwatch force with drop pods using either C:SM or CA.

Those are basically Rogue Traders. Well, not exactly, but still. The lexicanum article details it better. http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Rogue_Trader#.URRZxkr3h7Y

Hmm all these suggestions gave me a interesting idea.

Use codex Tyranids to do an Ogryn Army just replace Tyranid primes, warriors, and shrikes with converted Ogres.

Gnoblars could be gaunts, and maybe just for kicks a suped up cyber giant for a Trygon?

That could work, but in 40k fluff what would the Gnoblars be?

One of my favorite ideas is making a sons of malice army, malice is one of the chaos gods whose sole purpose is to destroy chaos it would be a cool looking paint scheme and you could probably use the grey knights codex

Another idea is making a mechcanicus army using the grey knights all henchman list might make for some really cool conversions

World Eaters 3000
Emperors Children 4000
Death Guard 5000
Thousand Sons 3000
Night Lords 4500
Iron Warriors 2500
Word Bearers 1750
Traitor Guard 3000
Chaos Daemons 4000

Seeing as how I have a mound of imperial guardsmen sitting on sprue looking at me like "Please paint us!" for the last 2 years. I am really leaning towards the Rogue Trader idea.

I'm really thinking on a hodge podge army idea to pull it all together. Question will be really can I make a IG army into an army where every model is unique and has it's own character.

IG has a ton of character already, since they know they'll die and will keep on goin'! Plus, you get to add beards and stuff to them! 40K doesn't have enough beards in it.

Got to admit its probably because I've been watching it at work, but how about a Star Blazers themed IG army?

I really like the art in the Dark Heresy RPG books I may start there and try to emulate some of the characters in the book.

It's gonna take a lot of sculpting. lol. But mostly add-on sculpting and not 100% custom model sculpting so I should be ok.
