I'm not 100% positive this belongs here, but it seems the most appropriate 40k sub-forum, so here goes.

So I love the look and feel of the new Dark Angels models and will be picking up several box sets when I get my tax return. The trouble is, I'm not generally fond of Dark Angels on the whole (I much prefer the Imperial Fists), and it looks like there is a LOT of Dark Angels heraldry that would need to be scraped off and replaced on those models.. So then I had a brainwave - I could create my own custom Chapter that is a successor of both the Dark Angels and the Imperial Fists. Naturally, this creates some questions -

Is this something that has precedent within 40k fluff? Can a chapter be descended from more than one parent chapter?

Are Dark Angels and Imperial Fists generally willing to work together? Would a successor chapter be accepted by both of its parents?

I realize that this might come across as a lazy/weak fix to my general dislike of Dark Angels, but I'm quite a bad modeler and really would prefer not to have to get rid of all that Dark Angels iconography (I don't want to ruin those gorgeous models).

Because of the whole 'Unforgiven' thing in the fluff, Dark Angels are generally reluctant to work together with most Imperial forces, especially to the degree that would lead to shared history.

I'm a little confused by you stating that you like the look and feel of Dark Angels, but don't like Dark Angels.

If I remember my chapters correctly, the Imperial Fists are masters of fortifications and siegecraft, as well as wearers of banana yellow armor.

Would it not be simpler to have your chapter as a successor to the Dark Angels that also favor siege tactics? They don't have to be Unforgiven (or even know about that, necessarily) just use Lion'El Johnson's geneseed. And if you paint them so that they are clearly different from Dark Angels (perhaps banana yellow?), then I imagine most non-tournament players would have no issue with you running them using Codex: Space Marine rules rather than Codex: Dark angels rules.

So, in other words, extremely unlikely, no 'official' precedent, but possible.

To clarify: I like the models of the current Dark Angels, not their fluff (Fallen everywhere!). I am okay with using their rules (or really, the rules of any Marine codex - half the reason I am starting this army is so I have Marine models to play around with and familiarize myself with the tactics of the various Marine dexes).

I guess my biggest worry here was that most of the Dark Angels chapters are all radically focused on the Fallen, which isn't really a direction I want to take with this chapter. As far as color schemes, I was thinking of more of a bronze or copper color (yellow seems....difficult...to work with).

Bear in mind that only a very, very few members of the inner circle of the Dark Angels know about the true nature of the Fallen. It doesn't seem far-fetched to me at all that (some, but not all of) the chapters created from the geneseed of Dark Angels wouldn't be privy to these mysteries, so your DA successors don't have to have that aspect of the fluff.

The yellow thing was simply because that's my over-riding image of the Imperial Fists, whom you mentioned as liking.

York/London(for weekends) oh for the glory of the british rail industry

As said in the thread it is believed that mixed geneseed leads to bad stuff in general so is not done anymore. There is also the part that if this new chapter knew it had mixed heritage it would cause a problem for the Dark Angels,. The Dark Angels would not accept the chapter into the Unforgiven and definitely not the Inner circle due to the divided loyalty of the new chapter.

The Fallen are the biggest problem for me within the Dark Angels fluff. It's not so much that they're a bad plot point, it's that everything that remotely touches on the Dark Angels in any way is about the Fallen. If I can have a Dark Angels successor that is blissfully unaware of the Fallen, that's good enough for me.

By all means its your army. Paint them however you want and say they are whatever you desire.

As far as it working with current story though, it really wont fit. The Fallen are only part of it. The other half of the background is that the Dark Angels and their successor chapters are still essentially one of the legions of old. They cooperate more than most other chapters and the other chapter masters still take the important marching orders from Azrial.

It's less about the Fallen and more about the fact they are essentially one Legion, not a dozen or so chapters.

not just paint but model as well. for example painting a ultramarine purple and saying this is a new chapter of the DA and mixed with BA to remove the bad parts only to keep the good bits, generally is a bad idea. if modelled so it incorporated a bit of both, then the further you get to making pure say BA or DA with no flaws then maybe add something to show they suffer from something else. (normally a BA becomes frenzied from Red rage/black rage ??- so add they become unmovable when faced with unsurmountable odds) otherwise like alot of beardy/cheesy players trying to take advantage of two chapters for the price of one

How about having a chapter of a different parent than the DA, but they idolise the DA ? so then you can use their codex and because they arent DA sucessors or even realted they dont know anything about the fallen, therefore you have no need for the fluff you dont like ?

It's not a terrible idea, but I'm having difficulty imagining an entire chapter of fanboy marines.

I'm wondering if it might not be best to write up a custom chapter that (similar to the Blood Ravens) is unaware of its lineage. The single biggest reason I'm picking up a Marine army is so I can experiment with all the Marine codexes (Black Templars, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, and Codex Marines) - after all, the best way to understand how an army works is to play it. A Chapter with unknown lineage would, I think, be a good, 'fluffy' reason for me to justify running the same models as marines from other 'dexes. I know Codex Marines might be the most 'politically correct' choice here, but the Dark Angels models are so pretty! I'm getting a pretty large selection of models to start with, so I could run anything but a mech force (no vehicles!) right off the bat.

I just have to come up with a chapter name, some backstory, and a color scheme! I was thinking of something like this as my color scheme:

And heck you can't even get your own jollies off without Slaanesh giggling and farting out some daemons. And if you manage to avoid all that, some genestealers might infiltrate your planet and bring a hive fleet crashing down on you any way.

There is also already precedent for DA Successors that don't count themselves as 'unforgiven'. The Angels of Absolution will hunt fallen when called, but they are not obsessed with it and don't feel all emo about it.

My DIY chapter will take this approach as well. They will be such a late founding (36th-37th mil) that they just don't feel that close to the events of Caliban and all that.

Not sure if this is an older or newer version, but I used this version.

Glad to see this. Perhaps I wouldn't mind running them as a stock Dark Angels successor, then.

How about if you were to paint them up in your own colours leaving the iconography in place, have them fluff-wise as a successor to the Imperial Fists - no Dark Angel background at all - and give them a chapter logo like DA but in different colours? The "Imperial Blades" Chapter for example, or "Swordmasters", or something like that.

This leaves you free to use them as Space Marines without any Dark Angel background interfering - so no Fallen. If you wanted to use them with Codex Dark Angels, you'd need to come up with some entertaining background as to why their Termies and Bikers are more hardcore than usual.
