Does a character lose the Fortress Of Shields +1 Toughness bonus when in a challenge even if he fulfils the requirements for the rule of touching to other bases?

Fighting A Challenge - last sentence

"For the duration of the challenge, these two models are considered to be in base contact only with each other."

Is this only for the purpose of striking hits in close combat?

Looking at the Challenge rules wording around the quote you posted doesn't seem to indicate that there are any caveats to that statement.

So I think the challenge fighters most definitely only count as being in case contact with each other for all purposes, which would naturally include Fortress of Shields as well.

Not only can this screw the DA fighting the challenge, but it can also screw the rest of his unit if he was being counted as one of the two models being used to grant the bonus to other models within his unit.

I concur with Yak - nothing stops this from being the case, sadly. Not sure it it was intended really, as a lot of the chalenge rules they dont seeem to have thought through (like majority WS and T)

I think most people would still permit models "connected" via him to have the +1T bonus. But no, he doesn't get it in a duel.

Isn't the whole idea that he walks out of the shieldwall and steps up alone to the person he is in a challenge with? Even if there is no one else to hit, your rank and file will simply stand around the two fighters, cheering their champion on.

I don't see then why the fighter should then get a bonus that, as far as I can understand, is for their "defend the brother to the left and right of you" tactic

I agree. We have to remember this rule also applies when it benefits the models in the challenge as well. For example, if a guy in a challenge also happens to be in base contact with a Wraith that has a Whip Coil, then he's not going to be affected by that Whip Coil as he only counts as being in base contact with his challenge foe.

So if you're playing with DW Knights and you like to accept challenges, then you just have to get in the habit of putting the character on the outside of the formation, so at least the rest of the unit still benefits from their +1T. Or you can always just deny the challenge and lose the character's attacks in return for making sure they all benefit from the +1T.
