This.

Also, OP, if you've got a Boyes nearby they sell the Vellejo model range for about £1.50 each.

Which old colors. Didn't they just change the paints like a year ago. So you mean the colors from two years ago?

They were the ones before they switched to the screw on hex pots. The taller hex and circular ones that lasted forever, which GW didn't like.

This. When I run out of my current pots, I'm getting these babies.

At op: you could also buy Reaper paints.

Just trying out vallejo and I have to say its a real eye opener.

Dropper bottles are so much more handy than flip tops. Their primers are ace and the consistency and colours seems so much better than GW's

I have to mention Cote 'd Arms too. But then I have a soft spot for the old 1st and 2nd ed GW paints. Still have a load I am using right here besides me. Metallic blues, greens and reds, who knew.

Tamiya are good for realistic military colours.

I use the Reaper MSPs, and really like them. I liked the Pro Paints too, but not the pots. The dropper bottles are superior in nearly every way. And for those of us not great at mixing, Reaper has a lot of "triads" - three colors that consist of a base, highlight and shadow color designed to work together.

This plus you can mix your own with Liquitex basics or professional series acrylics, just be prepared to add distilled water and flow aid and possibly matt medium.

Typically I use Vallejo unless for some reason I needed a paint ASAP and couldn't wait for it to come in the mail. In which case I run to the bunker and get some GW paint.

I prefer the dropper bottles over flip tops or any other type of bottle. I've also used reaper paints, and Privateer press P3 paints. All are pretty good. Reaper seems to require less thinning than the others but that is a non-issue with me.

Since I thin my paint on the brush and not in the bottle anyway.

I'm slowly switching to Vallejo since my GW paints are starting to dry up, which sucks. And they are also pricier and you get less.

AND I AM IN LOVE WITH VALLEJO. Especially the model color range, since I like my colors less saturated and more realistic. But I don't discriminate: I also use Game Color for bright colors. I can't recommend Vallejo enough. With Game Color and Model Color, you get a range of colors far massive than the Citadel color range. For a cheaper price. And you get more paints. And the quality is good and definitely better than the current GW paints.

Try them out.

Paint behavior and opacity varies from color to color within brands, so a variety is ideal, although it takes time and experimentation to figure out your preferences for all of your particular needs. If you're looking for a starting point while you begin to branch out, I'll add another hearty vote for Vallejo.
