Good evening Dakadaka.
I am very new to chaos, and although I have quite a few games playing as 'nids and Blood Angels under my belt, I would still consider myself a Novice player. I'm generally more into the collecting / painting side of things, but I do play every couple of weeks with a few regular friends.

I picked up the Dark Vengance box set not too long ago and I fell in love with the cool model design of the new Chaos. I picked up a copy of the new Chaos codex and promptly added a squad of Plague Marines and Nurgle Daemon Prince. I've also been given some Possesed.

I'd like to put together a fun but competitive army list focused mainly around a fluffy Nurgle theme, but I'm not in a rush, so it might take me several months to buy the required models, stick 'em together and get 'em painted up.

I'd like this thread to be a log of everything I get up to with my Chaos marines over the next couple of months, complete with pictures, re-structured army lists and ongoing discussions about what I should pick up next, what themes I should paint my troops and anything else you guys have to offer.

If this thread gets any interest, I'll talk about the guys I usually play against and the types of army's they usually field. If anyone feels like mentoring / dishing out constructive criticism, I'm always happy to learn and try new things.

Here is my current army, not necessarily what I use, but what I have available:

HQ - 210
Daemon Prince

Chaos Lord

Elites
5 Possessed

7 Plague Marines

Helbrute

Troops
7 Chosen

20 Chaos Cultists

My first question I pose to you, oh wise Dakkafriends, is what shall I pick up next?
A second squad of Plague Marines perhaps? Maybe a Rhino or some Chaos Spawn? Would some standard marines be a good place to start?

Enlighten me to the ways of Nurgle.

Also, here's the list I've been running for the only 2 500point matches I have played thus far:
Currect (Chaos_Space_Marines)

HQ - 205
Daemon Prince
wings; power armour.

Elites - 188
7 Plague Marines
2× meltagun.

Troops - 110
10 Chaos Cultists
heavy stubber.

10 Chaos Cultists
flamer.

If you want to run a Nurgle themed army, why don't you get/make a Nurgle marked lord to make those plague marines troops? And pick up some more plague marines.

I have seen multiple discussions on how to best run plague marines in the tactics section.

Also, can't go wrong with a Helldrake!

I've heard nothing but good things about the hell drakes, but unfortunately they don't look very Nurgely and I'm quite pedantic about the themes of my armies.

I've been reading up on Plague Marine tactics and there some really useful stuff in there, especially for my upcoming big match.

In the next few weeks I'm playing my first big game, a 1,500 point doubles game. I'll be playing Chaos Marines and my Ally will be fielding Chaos Daemons. Together we'll be fighting a newbie Space Wolf player, and an experienced vanilla Space Marine player.
Here's our current plan:
(Chaos_Space_Marines)

HQ - 220
Daemon Prince
Daemon of Nurgle; wings; power armour.

Elites - 440
7 Plague Marines
power fist; 2× meltagun; Veterans of the Long War.

7 Plague Marines
power fist; 2× meltagun; Veterans of the Long War.

Troops - 90
20 Chaos Cultists

Detachment: (Chaos_Daemons)

HQ - 270
Bloodthirster
Unholy Might.

Troops - 192
6 Bloodletters of Khorne

6 Bloodletters of Khorne

Heavy Support - 290
Daemon Prince of Chaos
Iron Hide; Unholy Might; Mark of Khorne.

Daemon Prince of Chaos
Iron Hide; Unholy Might; Mark of Khorne.

1,502 points

The guy playing Spacewolves has never used them before and isn't quite as sharp as his ally, the Space Marine player.
The Space Marine player is quite a tactical player and will probably be expecting us to go heavy on the monstrous creatures. I therefore expect him to be fielding lots of heavy weapons, maybe a few Dev squads. Either that or he'll go with a really fast army, full of bikes to manoeuvre around all the Daemons who will be coming in from reserves.

Any ideas / helpful advice?

I love my Chaos Space Marines, especially after the new Codex.

You really must add Typhus. He makes those Plague Marines a troop choice and opens the possibility of making your Cultists into Zombies

I saw a really cool heldrake conversion on youtube. It was a commisioned work. Used wings from a WFB dragon I think. Looked great! I was thinking maybe green stuffing up a mutated marine flier. Since apparently the fluff of the HD says it used to be a marine flier that mutated. Make it all gooey with GS and viola! Nurgle Helldrake.

I absolutely will be getting Typhus as soon as I can.
Does anyone use him routinely? I'm a bit worried about getting a few bad rolls with ManReaper (or whatever his weapon is called) and end up killing him before he does anything useful...

I also want to get some Chaos Spawn, and I've heard so many people recommending Chaos Bikers with MoS.

In fact, here's a brief run down of what I plan to get to complete the foundations of a 2,000 point army:

Complete Army Plan (Chaos_Space_Marines)

HQ - 450
Daemon Prince
Daemon of Nurgle; wings; power armour.

Typhus

Elites - 347
Helbrute
power fist (heavy flamer).

7 Chosen
power weapon; power fist; pair of lightning claws; meltagun; Mark of Nurgle.

Troops - 646
35 Plague Zombies

7 Plague Marines
power fist; 2× meltagun.
• Chaos Rhino

7 Plague Marines
power fist; 2× meltagun.
• Chaos Rhino

Fast Attack - 372
10 Chaos Bikers
Chaos Biker Champion (melta bombs); icon of excess; 2× plasma gun; Mark of Slaanesh.

1 Chaos Spawn
Mark of Nurgle.

1 Chaos Spawn
Mark of Nurgle.

Heavy Support - 152
1 Obliterator
Mark of Nurgle.

1 Obliterator
Mark of Nurgle.

Am I missing anything important?

That is an AWESOME idea!
Imma have a snoop around the net and see if I can find some ideas.
If you ever find that YouTube vid again, pleas elect me know. If I find it I'll link it up here.
EDIT. Check out this guid for building a Nurgle Heldrake. It's not a cheap way to do it, but it looks undoubtably bad ass.
