I know most peopel run them with psycannons, but the incinerators are so cheap, have people had success with them burning stuff up?

Every time someone asks about them I say this.

They are not a bad unit, its just that for grey knights they compete in a very compettitive spot. Dreadknights, Psyfleman, even a landraider if you might play draigowing are all extremely useful. Purgation squads come last in the Heavy support, but if you want to try them by all means go for it.

If they could take something like, lascannons, missile launchers like devastators to make them different them they might be a viable option.

unfortunately most of the grey knight armory is too short-ranged for their devastator-analogue to shine much. Astral aim isn't really as nice as you'd think, especially when compared to purifying flame, holocaust, or warp quake. They just don't really offer much of an advantage over a typical strike squad to justify their existance. Also yes, it's a very contested spot, psiflemen and dreadknights especially, so i'd suggest going with purifiers instead if you want to put boots on the ground with heavy weapons in hand.

tl;dr - They aren't bad, but they aren't especially 'good' either.

So what's the verdict then, slapping psycannons on them isn't that useful because those can be had by troops easily? And it'd be better to have rifle dreads for range?

How about the short range 'cheap' purgation option then. 4 incinerators with 5 guys for 100 points?

Incinerators are free on purifiers too and they get just as many of them, so you are still better off not picking up a purgation squad.

The issue is that Purifiers get the same dakka for the same price while being more powerful in melee. Plus it competes with Dreadknights, Dreadnoughts, and Land Raiders for a HS slot.

Huh. 5 Purifiers cost more and only get 2 incinerators.

You will be taking a full 10 man squad.

I will huh. Maybe you should mention that next time? I offered up a possible squad (of 5 men) and you said Purifiers get the same dakka. Not in a 5 man squad they don't.

Both squads will take the full 10 men because you need extra bodies to make sure your psycannons arn't getting taken out.

Its really a base assumption of any devestator type squad.

Oh yeah, and they aren't the same cost either. Purgation Knights are 20 each while Purifiers are 24 each.

Except I was commenting on incincerators. Please don't skim or neglect to read before you post.

I like purgation squadswhen taken as allies. My aim is to fit as many psycannons into the list as possible - so
A cheap inquisitor
a purifier squad
2 strike squads
a purgation squad
-thisn gets me 12 psycannons for 1055 points. Seems a lot but in an 1850 list I can easily find a primary force that works for 800 points to supplement them. Could be Necs/Tau/Orks ...

5 with incinerators, dropping out of a stormraven would be doable, then again, a lot of better Heavy choises to take...

Even with incinerators, you don't want your special weapon getting taken out. Thats why you got the squad in the first place.

That's what I was thinking. At least that would give them the best chance to use their incinerators. Probably isn't worth it to put them in anything else if they are going to have incinerators, right?
