Subject: Deathwing Army - Which Allies Would Work Fluff Wise?
|

Hi, so I have a solid 1500 Point Deathwing Army and I am looking to add something in the way of allies to bring it up to 3k. But I want the allies to work in fluff wise … which is why I’m posting here and not in the army list section. I am looking for something that fits but still is competitive. Just to put on here what the list is, so you have the force layout information.
Dark Angel’s Deathwing 1500 Point Loadout
Belial (Terminator Armor, Storm Bolter, Sword of Silence) – 190 {Attached to the 10 man Deathwing Unit}
Deathwing Command Squad (5 Deathwing Terminators, Standard of Fortitude, 1 Cyclone Missile Launcher) – 330 {Deployed using Deathwing Asssault}
10 Deathwing Terminators (1 Deathwing Terminator Sergeant with Power Sword, 9 Deathwing Terminators, 2 Assault Cannon) – 480 {Deployed using Deathwing Asssault}
5 Deathwing Terminators (1 Deathwing Terminator Sergeant with Power Sword, 4 Deathwing Terminators, 1 Chain Fist, 1 Cyclone Missile Launcher) – 250
5 Deathwing Terminators (1 Deathwing Terminator Sergeant with Power Sword, 4 Deathwing Terminators, 1 Chain Fist, 1 Cyclone Missile Launcher) – 250
= 1500
Any and all Feedback is welcome.
Please keep in mind this main focus of the post is Deathwing Allies from a Fluff Perspective.

Mech Guard might be good for you. Expensive but a CCS, PIC and IF all mounted in chimeras then some LRBTs in the HS slot would be a good fluffy combo.

I think there is definitely a correct answer here. And that answer is Guard.
What does a Deathwing army lack?
Model count - Guard can cover you there
Mech/mobility - Guard's got you covered there
Flyers/Anti-flyers - One word: Vendetta.
In terms of fluff, Dark Angels prefer to work alone so that nobody sticks their nose into their business. But that isn't always practical, so if Dark Angels have to work with someone, Guard are the best. History has shown that Dark Angels don't hesitate to abandon even fellow Space Marines if they get a tip that a Fallen is nearby. Unfortunately, Space Marines ask too many questions. If they abandon some puny Imperial Guard, probably less chance of anyone surviving to investigate them. And even if some do, who's going to bother? Who would take the word of a mortal over the word of an honorable Astartes of the First Legion?

In fact, Guard seems to be the best choice. For 500 to 1500 pts you'll get a solid IG detachment.

Guard would be a good fit but I would like to fit in a xenos army and start working on something less imperium - I'm strangely thinking about a 500 points seer council on bikes.
Farseer (Runes of Warding, Singing Spear, Eldar Jetbike) – 103
5 Warlocks (Singing Spear, Eldar Jetbikes) - 240
Leaving 157 to buy powers.
Would give me one extremely mobile hard hitting unit - and a start on an mech eldar army that would soon follow.
- Fluff Wise eldar normally dont mind working with marines to stop large immediate threats and if a Fallen was involved the DA really wouldnt care as long as he was neutralized.
Or
Tau Crisis suits & added Broadsides - and a start on a mech tau army that would soon follow.
- Fluff Wise .... gimme a few to justify having broadsides lol (any help?)
Anyone have any thoughts b/t the two, and if so any list examples?
Thanks

As far as xenos go if I recall correctly the Dark Angels are even less inclined to look favourably on them than other Chapters do. Besides, how long would it take for the Dark Angels to fall on their erstwhile allies after the Fallen have been captured.
To me Imperial Guard are the most fluffy choice outside an allied detachment from another Chapter. The Guard could be local PDF that the Dark Angels temporarily ally with or they could be on a much longer campaign together. Either way it is unlikely that they'll ask too many questions. Even if they do the galaxy is a big place and they won't be missed.

Well it sounds like you have your answer.
Fluff-wise IG is the best fit.
Xeno-wise, Tau probably is the best fit for DA. They have conflicted with Eldar in The Battle of Midpoint, and The Defense of Ex Lucan VII, but they have no recorded conflicts with Tau.

Yeah, the only time the DA would consider Xeno's help is if the Fallen were directly being fought and the situation didn't look too good for the DA. And even the, Space Marine ego would take over and refuse the help.
The IG look to be the best for what you want. Not only does it cover any open gaps in shooting ability and numbers, but it also is fluffy. Sure, the DA likely wouldn't directly ask for help from the local PDF (outside bullet magnets, which is basically what they are), but im sure the PDF wouldn't mind the help from some Spess Mahreens

Guess thats true ... had an idea about mech guard a while back and it just seemed daunting getting all of the models ... 500 pts wouldnt be a bad idea - ill just have to hold back the urge to buy 6 chimeras and 3 leman russ's at once.
Actually thinking about for bring up the DA list to 2k maybe adding in a libby in termie armor (attached to the 10 man squad) and 3 vindicators. Would pack a pretty big punch and take some focus off the terminators.
Thinking about trying to list build for 3k points apoc and Deathwing + IG there wouldnt be a bad option.

This is pricy, but fun. Take 15 land speeders, 3 squads of 5. Take a 2nd heavy bolter, tops out at 900 points. Or with Typhoon missile launchers, then it's 1125 points. Plus ravenwing is fluffy.
