'Straya... Mate.

Hello, I'm Rippy!

For many years I have been interested in WH40k, for over 10 years now. With my brother in law being a player for a long time, he always tried to get me to start war gaming ever since I met him. Two weeks ago, a friend from work gave me the final nudge. Since then, I have been reading about 40k constantly, getting the rule book, reading it front to back, forum posts, YouTube videos, it has just been non-stop.

After reading about all my choices, it has finally come down to picking Orks. Also, post reading through the codex front to back many times now, I am at a bit of a loss as to what sort of army I should build. After looking on the internet at new player guides etc. the YouTube war reports just don't match up with the advice given.

Now from my readings, it appears that 6th edition favours shooting, rather than close combat, although Orks seem to be a lot better in assaults. I don't really like the look of speed freaks so much, but at the same time, don't just want big shootas only sitting back, if you know what I mean.
So other then boyz, boyz, BOYZ, what advice/strategy can you give a brand new Ork general/war gamer?

On a side note, love the whole modeling/painting/conversion side to it so far, it is a blast!

So very nice to meet everyone in this community, and looking forward to a life long hobby in war gaming!

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Thanks guys, appreciate the welcome.
So even though 6th is shooty, should I just build an army how I think will be fun anyway? Or should I stick to a certain strategy?
Thanks again!

Another question (although answer seems obvious) should I just go full shoota boyz? Or would some shoota boyz and some slugga/choppa boyz work as well? Thanks

Hi there. Welcome to Dakka.

As for how to kit out your boyz, look in the army list forum, or the 40k tactics and general sections.

These days, I hear a lot about Trukks and Battlewagons to get your shooty troops into range, and aircraft as support.
There's little mention of hth units, or even Kan walls any more :(
Bikers seems better now, though. Look around for advice about bikes, maybe.

Well it doesn't really matter just as long as you have fun. If your fun comes from beating people, you xould change your list to be competitive in shooting. Or if you think you'll have more fun with speed freeks then go for that. Be warned: orks are terrible at shooting. The only winning lists I've ever seen just relvove around a lot of boyz (like 90). Ghazgul has also won games from what I've seen. Hope that helps. -Color Sgt. Kell

Shoota boys are very popular. Lootas and such. I think a mix is always in order. Having some choppy boys hanging out in you deployment zone works well against troop deep strikers. But yes, post something up the the tactics forum.

Still haven't seen any other Aussies!!

Okay thanks, this was originally posted in 40k section of the forum, although since I was saying hello as well as asking questions, it got moved to introductions. I guess I will start a new thread over there. Thanks again.
