It was confirmed yesterday by Pentagon officials that Russian TU-95-H Bear bombers orbited the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam on Feb. 12 and were equipped with nuclear tipped anti-ship cruise missiles. The Russian bombers were escorted by Guam based F-15's of the U.S. Air Force.

In recent years, Russia has resumed long range ocean patrols by the Tu-95 aircraft over both the Atlantic and Pacific overflying U.S. Navy carrier battle groups during such flights. NATO member nations, the USA, Canada and most recently Norway have had to scramble fighter jets to intercept Russian aircraft violating their airspace as has Japan. Such patrols had long ceased after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

While this is not the first time TU-95’s have appeared near Guam since the resumption of the flights, it is the first time since the Cold War they have been flying armed with nuclear weapons.

TU-95's haven't been to rare in approaching our airspace, but nuclear armed ones? That's one hell of a message Putin just sent our way.

Dang, and I thought any action would come from China in this day and age.

And are we sure they actually armed with nuclear weaponry? It is common practice for things with nuclear weaponry to carry dummy rounds, like our subs have a bunch of missiles but only a few are real and the crew arn't told which is which.

I couldn't say. I just know that's the story that's being told.

Putin's been making a point for a long time that Russia still deserves the world's respect, even if he has to terrorize and threaten his own nation and every other to do it. I find it astounding that the Russian nation is investing so much money in continuing to compete with the other superpowers even after it adopted capitalism instead of using the "enemy's" tools to repair and progress themselves to a point where they could demand respect in other ways.

That's because Russian politics haven't changed much despite the switch to capitalism.

*facepalm* can someone take Putin aside and ask him to spend more time tiger hunting or something? Seriously the fewer nations playing the saber rattling game the better everything is.

Yes I'm aware what country I'm from and that this has the potential to be ironic.

I would expect Russias strategic bombers to be equipped with nukes.

The only unusual thing here is that 'they were in the vicinity of Guam.
Aircraft from the far east district don't usually venture in that area.
