Ok so i pulled up my FAQ for blood angels to see what has changed for them since the new flyer commpendium came out and well it says my Stormtalon has lost deepstrike doese that mean it HAS to come on the table edge because that honestly makes no sense to me one of the beauties of flyers was that they could come in anywhere they wanted and then rain heck on people. Could someone help me verify this or if I am wrong point me in the right direction. Thanks

Yep. All the flyers which were given Deep Strike back in 5th ed when they were skimmers have now lost it. Storm Ravens, Storm Talons, Night Scythes, Doom Scythes, Valks/Vendettas, and the Dark Eldar ones.

Yes they can only come on from your table edge post FAQ.

Why you would even want to risk scattering, and being destroyed, with a Stormraven and its payload is beyond me. The Stormraven's weapons can reach most anything on the table with the Stormraven's Zoom move of up to 36 inches.

WHAT THE !!!!!! Why the would they do that what is the point of a flyer now I mean really it is a flyer in my minds eye I saw these things zooming in from the clouds to obliterate everything and then zoom off somewhere else. But now it is like well I know we have intergalactic space traveling technology but you can only come in this way because we said so I mean really why not at leaset give them outflanking this is one of the dumbest things GW has done in a long time.

Deep Striking was a terrible option most of the time, because it was very easy to mishap with your expensive flyer and any contents.

95% of the time you're better off just Zooming in from the table edge anyway.

I understand what you were saying but it was nice to have the option that and it just made it that much more cinematic. Now flyers are just not as cool anymore.

It was nice to have the option of your expensive flyer and its cargo falling off the table or being sucked into the warp? Seriously?

Flyers don't suck, your army will operate the same as it did before, and the sky isn't falling.

Fly-ers? I play Eldar. What are these Fly-ers you talk about?

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I didn't mind the option of having my flyer coming in facing any direction I wanted.

I must have missed where the scythes lost deep strike though.

Ya, I just noticed the new FAQs now....wow.

I do get why they did it for necrons though, it was just dirty to the point of broken with Zahndrek. Haha.

You do realise that once 6th edition hit the shelves you couldn't use Deep Strike with Flyers anyway right? Deep Striking means that they move less than 18'' and thus crash at the end of their movementphase.
Besides, you still appear from reserve and with a flyers movement you can reach almost any point of the board anyway without the risks of scattering into terrain, enemy troops or off the damn table.

I have a little hobby-thread going in the P&M section. Some say it's the best blog on Dakka, some don't agree, most belive it would be better if I finished at least one project some time this century and not just kept starting new ones.
Check it out, you just might like it.

You definitely could! Deep Strike counts as moving at Cruising Speed, which is 18-36"
There was even an FAQ stating you could!

Interestingly, our group never attempted to deep strike flyers anyway.

Mainly due to the risk of losing the unit did not outweigh the ease with which they were able to hit anywhere they wanted coming from the table edge anyway.

So, I was actually surprised by the faq's removing that capability.. because I had forgotten it even existed.

For all but the Necron ones it really doesn't make much of a difference, as someone mentioned it made Zahndrek's ability a bit to good by letting Necron players get flyers on the board turn 1 potentially.

Well, you use to be able to DS a Stormraven on top of an unfurled Shy Shield, go hover, furl, and now you have a sniper tower with 4++ save, 4 hull points, range on everything, and the ability to deploy assaults from any side. I can understand the update to remove the option.

The SR can reach the Skyshield on its first Zoom move and put it into shielded mode. nothing changes, and the SR gets a 4++ whilst retaining Hard to Hit on the first turn.

It is actually easier to hit the SR if you DS onto the Skyshield than if you Zoom onto the Skyshield, and they still get a 4++ whilst on top of the pad.

Since you could DS while Zooming there isn't a difference in how Hard to Hit the SR would be.

Irrelevant now though.

My post was in reference to jeffersonian000 saying "you use to be able to DS a Stormraven on top of an unfurled Shy Shield, go hover, furl, and now you have a sniper tower with 4++ save"

He noted hover mode, I was responding with Zooming is better and you can still reach the Skyshield. So there is a difference.

To address the earlier concern of why risk a SR by DS, easy answer, it can DS while Zooming and Zooming flyers ignore terrain, so unless you land on a unit, a flyer can land free and clear wherever it goes.

don't even understand why people care. The only real impact this had on the game is the necron DS response to a reserves unit is gone.

Here at the LGS we took it to mean they all lost DS when 6th came out. Never really considered you could. No change for us with this one.

Disagree. I find the idea of my flyers coming in over the heads of my marines very cinematic. Much more so than a slow descent from above.

GET SOME!
