because the FAQ 1.2v for 6th ed States:

Q: Are the Sanguinor, Mephiston and Death Company Tycho
Independent Characters, or single model units in their own right?
(p41, 47, 51)
A: Single model units in their own right.

Does that mean that he counts as a unit in which a independant character can then join?
Or is there some other rule i probably haven't seen in the Rule book prohibiting this?

Page 39, Independent Character section, left column, first graph, second sentence answers this question.

Remember that Mephiston is a unit that always consists of a single model.

Yeah i saw that but where does it say that Mephiston is a unit that can only have 1 it says he is a Unit of 1 but not that it must remain that way so im thinking maybe they've just gone and worded it poorly

Mephiston cannot join another unit, so is always a unit consisting of one model. He therefore cannot be joined by an ic

Sadly a unit of Mephiston always contains only one Mephiston. ICs cannot join it.

Exactly. This is the determining factor. When you buy a unit of Mephiston, it's always 1. Other units, which can be bought in groups of more than one model, can be joined by ICs (assuming there's not another restriction in play, like not joining vehicles).

So, for a few examples, since Attack Bikes and Carnifexes can be bought in squads of up to 3, a SM character can join a unit of a single Attack Bike, and a Tyranid Prime can join a unit of a single Carnifex. OTOH, an Eldar Farseer can never join a Wraithlord or the Avatar, because those are both units which always have a squad side of 1.

Why the heck DC Tycho can't join a unit of DC, however, is beyond my understanding. Especially considering pretty Tycho can.
