Bloodthirsty Chaos Knight
|
I'm going to be participating in a doubles tournament in April with either another Wolves player or a Grey Knights player (probably the former because the Knights player isn't sure if he can make it) a Blood Angels player (see below). I've got the next two months to try and put things together and here's what I was thinking of bringing:
This list has been updated in a later post. Scroll down.
HQ:
Rune Priest Jens Silverwolf
-Divination powers
100 pts
Elites:
7 Wolf Guard
I - Terminator
- Wolf Claw
- Combi Plasma
II - same as above
III - same as above
IV - Terminator
- Power Axe
- Combi Plasma
V - Terminator
- Chainfist
- Heavy Flamer
VI - Power Sword
VII - Power Axe
Drop Pod
* VI and VII are split off into Grey Hunter squads
311 pts
Troops:
10 Grey Hunters 180
-Wulfen
-2X Melta
-Standard
10 Grey Hunters 180
-Wulfen
-2X Melta
-Standard
Heavy Support:
5 Long Fangs
-4 Missile Launchers
Fortification:
Aegis Defense Line
-Quad Gun
Total: 996
Got over two months to get all this together and have everything except 2 missile Fangs, one standard bearer, and the Defense Line.
Suggestions? I'm open to modifying/removing the Terminator squad and putting something else in. Also keep in mind that I'm partnering up with either another Wolves player or a Grey Knights player. The tournament organizer is using the allied forces rules for the two partnered armies so I can't team up with Chaos or Nids.

I think it depends on your partner, if it's the SW player have him focus on more troops and LF. If you can work it out to get pods for your melta GH do it, otherwise they'll be shot to bits before they can do anything. You'll want more GH and make sure that he makes his Plasma to have some range to shoot anything coming at you guys.

If I nix the Wolf Guard (including pack leader ones), I can bring
Rune Priest
-Bolter (to satisfy the leaders of the pack rule)
100 points
10 more Grey Hunters
- 2x Plasma
- Wulfen
Drop Pod
210 points
That drops the total to 995 so I can cram a 5 point upgrade somewhere else (but what?). I do like the idea of having some sort of shock unit though for disrupting the enemy, though Pod Hunters can fulfill that role to some extent. I wasn't saying nix the WG I agree with you about the shock unit, I just said that make sure if your team mate is the SW player that he has a few more troop choices. One of the key successes to SW strategy is that our GH are among the best troop choices in the game because of the versatility.
At 1000 pts you obviously can't bring a lot of them but make sure your partner works his army to benefit from yours and vice versa. Otherwise you're going to have two very small armies that get popped early on. I thought it was a good list, my only comment was to remind you that you're on a team and need to work a strategy together.

Alright, change in plans. My partner is now going to be a Blood Angels player. He's already told me he intends on using Death Company dudes, so I'm going to bring up the objective holding part of the game as well as mid-field/long range support. I've went ahead and put my second idea into this list.
HQ:
Rune Priest Jens Silverwolf
-Divination powers
100 pts
Rune Priest Markus Frostfang
-Bolter
-Chooser
-LL and Jaws
110 pts
Troops:
10 Grey Hunters
-Wulfen
-2X Melta
-Standard
180 pts
10 Grey Hunters
-Wulfen
-2X Melta
-Standard
180 pts
10 Grey Hunters
-Wulfen
-2X Plasma
-Standard
185 pts
Heavy Support:
6 Long Fangs
-5 Missile Launchers
140
Fortification:
Aegis Defense Line
-Quad Gun
100
Total: 995
5 points to cram somewhere. BTW, the TO announced the game types and they're all going to be objective based games. First, the Crusade with Vanguard Strike deployment. Then, Emperor's Will with Dawn of War deployment. Then, finishing off with The Relic with Hammer and Anvil deployment.

Veteran Wolf Guard Squad Leader

This is your best list yet, but honestly I think you could do better. Of course this is completely dependent on what your partner brings and what your opponent has.
If you're not too worried about flyers, I'd recommend ditching the ADL for something like this
1 rune priest
3 Grey Hunter squads (10 men each)
2 Long Fang squads
1 lone wolf or 1 ADL withOUT quad gun.
Or
1 rune priest
4 Grey Hunter squads (10 men each)
1 Long Fang Squad
Because IMHO, the second rune priest and quad gun don't do that much for you. These lists will give you plenty of troops to capture objectives and just generally support your partner. They're very versatile even if they don't have a big wow factor. On the other hand, if you want your force to be the hammer and your partner's to be the shield, then I'd recommend taking only two troop choices and investing in a deathstar like a a big unit of TWC, or some wolf guard in a Land Raider lead by a Wolf Priest. Depends on what you want to do.

Actually, it's going to be the other way around. As I said, my partner is going to be a Blood Angels player who's taking advantage of Death Company. He may also bring his flyer and maybe his deathstar that's been a pain in the ass for our club for a while: bunch of assault terminators with a Librarian and Brother Corbulo. I don't know how much all that is. Meanwhile, I provide mid-field and ranged support. Werewolf wall and vampire lance. As he puts it, Twilight. As I put it, Transilvanian Hunger.
I already know my opponents will include Necrons and Grey Knights. A single flyer that has to sit in reserve isn't going to be of much help when there's a chance that their flyers come in before his. I also like two Rune Priests for an increased anti-psyker buffer zone to shut down said Grey Knights and whatever other things that might psych our dudes to hell.

This looks solid to me. Though yeah, it can depend on what the other person is bringing. Armour maybe, Thunderwolves migt also fit well.
I like the Wolf Guard, though I have never been a fan of combi plasmas. Maybe give the GH one melta and a plasma for free.(at 10) Then give the WG something else, Thunder Hammer or something if it will fit.
I do also like the idea of a big Lone Wolf to stick with the Runpriest. I use this often and it works well. Terminator armour and a good power weapon can be very affective.

He's bringing something along the lines of this:
Reclusiarch
Brother corbulo
Terminator assault squad
Death company marines
Death company dreadnought
Stormraven Gunship
From what I've seen him play in the store, he'll most likely run the Terminators and Corbulo on foot and have the Chaplain and Deathcompany inside the Stormraven. He has no scoring units, but he can still contest which is all we really need to do for at least game one (The Crusade).
That sounds questionable and cheesy. I don't want to rile up anyone. Besides, I'd rather double up those weapons in each Hunter squad so I can roll more dice for them and have better chances to hit.
