Characters that you personally emphasize with or see yourself as. This is not who’d you’d like to be.

Like the great storm of the Horus Heresy, the forces of the True Gods will descend upon the Emperor's minions. The stars will tremble at their passage and the mighty armadas of the Warmaster Abaddon will bring annihilation to a hundred worlds. Know this, for these things will come to pass.

Honestly I emphasized with Uriel Ventris from the Ultramarine omnibus.
I'm not much of a codex guy myself, and he got sent to the damn eye of terror for breaking it, and he won and everything, and then isn't trusted by his men once he returns.

As for me I like Talos, I empathize with him, although my favorite of the 8th is Sahaal he's too perfect, to sure of himself no matter the odds, the kind of guy I could see myself following but never being, Talos exsperiences feelings of guilt, despair, and doubts of whether his struggle has any meaning to it, he's the most human of any of the astartes, traitor or loyalist, niether a superhuman super loyal hero or a animal like monster who just wanted to kill and burn, he was one of the rare 40k character that actually seemed human.

HERESY!

I actually really like Cain's "whatever I can do to not get my ass shot" attitude. It's exactly how I would feel if I were thrust into an eternal war mostly against my will. Also, I do like his "just enough work to enjoy the benefits" that goes along with that

I've got to say, and it's probably off topic and all personal opinion and stuff. However....
I've heard this sort of thing about Lord of the Night for many years but only got round to reading it about 6 months ago. It seems to me that the folk who have this sort of opinion of how awesome/perfect Sahaal was, completely missed the point of the novel...

Zso Sahaal was wrong, badly, badly wrong. I believe the Night Lord he runs into at the end even says how utterly deluded he was..

I don't see how the fact that his legion failed in his absense makes him deluded. He lived and possible died fighting for his beliefs, its sort of like the saying if you've lost faith then you never faith to begin with(i'm not a religous person in any way but I always find that saying very true).

Talos or Sevatar - They seem a lot more human(well talos anyway) than most of the "loyalists i've read about in other novels.

Just off topic also. Sahaal still followed konrad curzes use of fear as a tactic only during the heresy, while the other night lords were corrupted due to the long war that they see fear as the ultimate goal already, the night lords he met were more corrupted already that's why they see him in a different light

Well I got trapped under a fallen building for 7 days and 7 nights, with an uncontrollable rage burning up inside me, until the 7th day I remembered the breathing exercises my anger management councilor taught me, and I over came the rage. Breaking free from the rubble, I was assaulted by Orks, until I ripped the still beating heart out of the biggest Ork assailing me.

You are describing either a Mary Sue, or a sociopath, both of which are found in vast quantities in 40K. Anyway, the majority of the Night Lords either ignore him as a joke pretender, or actively consider him a traitor, so I don't know if he is really someone worth following. Also, the comma in your screen name confuses me.

Talos and Sevatar were both well-written, more or less, but if anyone actually empathizes with them, you're empathizing with total donkey-caves that like skinning and torturing people.

It's difficult to empathize with a lot of Black Library characters, given their incosistent characterization or outright alien mindset, but I guess I understand the Thousand Sons the most (or any sorcerer, really); given an avenue of study like the Warp, I too would probably become consumed with mastering it and along the way become an arrogant d-bag because of said (illusion of) mastery.

Oh man yeah he does. Pisses me off and makes me shed a tear every damn time. CURSE YOU ABNETT! CURSE YOU TO THE DEPTHS OF THE EYE OF TERROR!

I actually empathize Eisenhorn in the later novels. The way he constantly doubts his path, walking the line between pure truth and delusional heresy is very heartbreaking to me. That said, I would never compare myself to him. I don't think any person alive has the mental, spiritual, or physical fortitude of that Inquisitor.

If I were to compare myself to a character, it'd probably be a random ork. I like getting rowdy and talking like a British soccer hooligan. Oh, and I also love the dakka.

Often their just different sides of the same thing, just about every serial killer was described by his nieghbors as being a "nice guy".

Hypocrisy at its finest. Did you ever do a school project about Roosevelt, or Truman, both men supported dropping jellied gasoline on German and Japanese civilians and ushered in an atomic age where peace was maintained through fear of atomic holocaust? Are the kids today that do their school reports on these men as you put it "empathizing with total donkey caves". Whether I agree with what these men or notdoes not affect my ability to empathy, nor does it limit my ability to condemn the real or the fictional, unlike others I see the world for what it truly is.
First of all, the word you are all looking for is "empathize".

I think you are over thinking this. Those characters in the books litteraly are heartless and very cruel people that could care less how many people they kill.

Roosevelt and Truman, though both approved horrible things, they generally tried to figure out ways to prevent these deaths, they tried to save the most lives they could and regreted their decisions.

I felt sorry for Astelan in Angels Of Darkness. He wasnt completely corrupted like some chaos maniac fallen who deserve a good torture interrogation. Being warped from caliban just after the heresy into a future thousands of years later. I felt sorry for him because it was as if he was lost and did not know what to do with himself shunned by the dark angels and still believing in the emperors vision he was at a bit of a loose end.
