I've been told by more experienced players to not bother with any command group upgrades for Chaos Knights. The reasoning is the standard is useless because they'll win the battle anyway and will deal with Steadfast so winning by more isn't an issue. I'm less sold on leaving out musician/champion. Is it really a waste of points? In this specific instance I had an Exalted Hero with them, so I can see leaving out the champion. But when they're on their own, it seems like it might be handy to get some Eye of the Gods rolling going, and the extra attack seems nice.

The standard if magic is a great addition to the knights, either the blasted if you are going tzeentch, ofrthe discipline one for ld 9 comes really handy.

I personally wouldn't left out the musician it gives just too much flexibility to not waste your whole movement phase reforming.

The champ i can see a unit without him. If you are running a hero with that unit then maybe you might want to take it so that he can accept challenges you don't want to get into with your hero/lord.

Do they really need the leadership banner, though? I can definitely see the blasted standard, but I'm running them MoK for the moment.

Well, they will porbably be outside the range of your general, unless he is the one raiding with them, and 1 ld is huge sometimes, besides it is only 10 pts iirc

The Lair of Vengeance....Poole.

If you're taking little groups of 5, just go with a musician for swift reforming purposes.

If you're committing to the unit, go standard and a musician.

If you're adding a killy lord in there go full command. That way your champ can declare a challenge and your lord can beat down the unit.

I never thought about that, actually. I had a hero on a demonic mount, who stomped people in challenges but the mount never got to do its shenanigans. If I had a champion I would've been able to get the hero's full effect in and still won the challenge anyway, most likely.

Remember thou that if the lord is on a daemonic steed he doesn't get to roll LoS and can therefore be sniped by a cannon

Just give him the 3+ ward and re-roll 1's (no Khorne on the unit though.) I'd hope people try to waste cannons on him then vs shooting the Chimaera, Daemon Princes, Chariots, Shaggoths...etc
