Hello everybody!

I am adding another wargame beside 40k, just looked around and Infinity seems really cool while yet still not as money hungry as 40k.

I proceeded selecting an army based on how cool the miniatures look to me, as I did with 40k, and ended up choosing PanOceania. Then I discovered they have the Swiss Guard and this is almost mandatory for me
I am building a list I find fun to play, without going for the optimized waac combo (as it seems luckily there is none, at least having the 40k mindset).

That's the idea, sticking between 3-400 point range:
1 TAG (cycling between the Cutter and the Dragao - railgun ftw)
1 Swiss Guard (hmg or ml - depending on the mood)
1 Joan D'arc (I would say because she gives +1 swc if taken as Lieutenant, but the real reason is she is a blonde girl with a huge sword)

But this is going to be costly, point wise, leaving me with 100-200 roughly points, throw in few cheap light infantry for orders, but also trying to have a decent hacker and medic around, you never know.
Could be fun to add some middle tier (50-70 points) models, have 6-8 models group and put the game as strategic as my brain can turn it out.

Would you share some fun ideas?

WARNING: Pan'O new player trap detected! Experienced player advice beginning deployment.

lol so this isn't terribly uncommon for new players starting up with Pan'O, but be careful of grabbing a lot of high point cost models right out the gate. When learning Infinity you will want to start with very basic guys just to learn the mechanics of the game. Unlike every other game out there, you do NOT want to just jump into a standard point value and do a "trial by fire" learn as you go method. You will end up with a very bad experience.

The second problem you will run into is TAGs can turn a standard "kill each other game" turn the match rather 1-Dimesional. If they kill the TAG they win, if the don't kill the TAG they lose. As you move into mission play and building that are internally playable it becomes much less of an issue, but until then it'll make a rather dull experiance right out the gate.

All that said, Joan + one of those TAGs + Swiss Guard will be about 220-245pts. That will leave you with a serious skeleton crew for orders. It's doable, but an experienced player will just wreck your backfield to order starve you. You can block this of course, but that will take practice. I'd highly recommend picking up a starter you like the look of and Joan to begin with. That will give you a solid core of models to start playing and learning with.

lol I failed my "don't be a cheerleader enthusiast" roll.

Kinda like "woohoo let's go all Broadsides!!". Thanks BlueDagger for the headsup!

Me and the gaming group are going to make some very small games with the "light-rules" to get into the game, without adding all the complex stuff and models.

My idea is to go later toward the models I feel should be omnipresent (Swiss Guard and one TAG) and build a viable and fun to play list around them.

Haven't yet noob planned a double TAG+9 lightinfantry going full rambo and getting instawrecked for the sake of it. That's not the fun I am looking for ;-)

haha yeah that is a good analogue. In Tau terms it would be like taking 9 Broadsides, 2x 5 man packs of Firewarriors without Devilfish, and an ethereal HQ... in a 5 objective game.

Pan'O has a lot of really cool toys, the problem typically is if you take 2-3 of the really cool toys, the rest of your list is crap. A cutter LT and a Swissguard HMG is 184pts and 5SWC. That leaves you with 116pts and 1SWC for another 8 troops. This leads to a pile of cheerleader troops, so if you big boys go down to a few bad rolls (or lucky opponent rolls) it'll be hard to come back.

Double TAGs in all honesty isn't all that great. All you orders are typically used up in just one making it difficult in your reactive phase to hold you ground with the skeleton crew left behind.

Personally if I did Pan'O I'd go with either 1 TAG + a bunch of mid point range guys or 2-3 HI with a few mid range guys and some cheerleaders. That way you have a solid core and aren't so top heavy.

Example of a well balanced Pan'O cutter list...

Panoceania | 9 models

Your 10pts over so you'll need to trim a bit. In Infinity the point costs are very set in stone because 1pt is a significant upgrade on some stuff. You could probably cut out the Trauma Doc easily since without palbots she'll burn too many orders getting to her target and with WIP 12 she has a 40% chance killing them even when she does get there lol.

Just something to note - this isn't like 40k where you agree to a points value and play. Scenarios have different points values. The two non-campaign scenarios are 200pts and 300pts, and the campaign scenarios are all 300pts. Anything above 300pts at the moment is simply going to be for variety swapping models into games, unless you find a plucky opponent who really wants to try higher points levels. As it is, 300pt games are very involved already.

Additionally, 300 points is generally the largest game played. Why? Unlike most every other game, at larger points amounts, the game doesn't actually get bigger. It gets more elite.

This is due to the way combat groups and orders are designed to be optimal at 10. Get the models you like, but be sure to get some cheaper and mid-range models to form a variety of lists instead of ones that feature multiple super-units at once. You'll have a more fun time!

There is a reason I own almost the whole Nomad line, options. The models are so awesome that jsut owning htem is cool, but being able to swap in out options on the fly (without proxy guilt) is great. Also note that Infinity is very forgive about proxies, to the point of most people not caring, as long as it's not an ITS tournament.

Thanks everyone!
I'll most surely end up like BlueDagger with the whole line of models anyway.

I need to read again the rulebook so I can choose wisely the models to field. But this game is just awesome!!

Yeah, take it from a new PanO player, the last thing you want is some cool toys and a lot of useless dudes at the back.

I've always fielded the Nisse sniper, and when it's far away, it does a really good job. I'd have to check the price, but I think it is a tad more expensive.

Question to the experts: Is putting a basic Aquilla or Swiss Guard really worth that many points for a multi rifle?

Really? Generally, that is what I want. Some cool models that can do the killing, with some cheaper grunts holding your deployment zone providing orders. There's not much point making your cheerleaders killy units, because you don't want them to be killing. You want them to be cheerleading.

That's why my lists always have a base of 2-3 Ghulam (one of which is the Lt) and a Ghulam Doctor with two Nasmats. The Ghulam all sit back, out of view, doing nothing unless I'm in dire straits and need them on the field. The doctor even does this, doctoring through her remotes.

I only use a Swiss guard multirifle if I need a tough hacker and can't take a Deva Hacker (I play Neoterra - we don't get the good hackers in the form of the kamau).

- and I still get to play the camo shenanigans with him.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

That is 41 points with a 1.5 SWC. The Nisse's are my favorite units and I always try to include at least one in every PanO list I run. The Nisse HMG is truly terrifying with MSV2....although for a MI the rather short movement does limit it somewhat.

For PanO I definitely recommend getting some Auxila as the benefits of using them can't be stressed enough. They're great for flushing out the enemy, especially if they're supported by some heavy hitters in the backfield.

And honestly, I've never fielded the Trauma - Doc because 1) I don't have the model and 2) I have a Knight Hospitaller I can use if I'm really that hot on needing a doctor. Although the KH is 52 points....so it's not a cheap option.

Joan of Arc is a great model, but I prefer Joan 2.0 due to the faster movement and the Spitfire...because Spitfire.
