The Phoenician

“Up then, fair phoenix bride, frustrate the sun;
Thyself from thine affection
Takest warmth enough, and from thine eye
All lesser birds will take their jollity.
Up, up, fair bride, and call
Thy stars from out their several boxes, take
Thy rubies, pearls, and diamonds forth, and make
Thyself a constellation of them all;
And by their blazing signify
That a great princess falls, but doth not die.
Be thou a new star, that to us portends
Ends of much wonder; and be thou those ends.”

John Donne

Lovely painting, especially all of the different tones of purple - I don't see Fulgrim though, he looks like a pirate to me. Also I would expect him to be more physically intimidating [i.e. chunky], even out of power armour. Still, great painting.

Cheers tyrannosaurus.

I've noted in my design notes (found on my blogsite) that I imagined Fulgrim to be slender of frame because he is not one of the mass produced specimens that the Astrates are. In comparison (even to his brother primarchs) Fulgrim makes other warriors look quite gaudy and unrefined. He is a fencer not a butcher. An artist, not a ham fisted killer.

Hope this helps.

I agree with your artistic choices here, Lil. I saw this and knew it was supposed to be Fulgrim instantly. (I clicked on the thread before I read the title... )

I think it makes him look a little more effete than some of the other Primarchs, but I think that is consistent with the image he tried to build for himself. This is the exact sort of outfit I see Fulgrim picking out for himself. I think that while he would look like your standard suped-up marine while in power armor, outside of it he would choose a style that would try to get as far from that image as possible. It does indeed conjure up images of swashbucklers, but that's kind of the point, and I love it! Great job, both in breaking stereotype, and with making it work!

I find it very, very strange that Fulgrim is hands down my least favorite Primarch, and this may very well be my favorite Primarch figure! Excellent job indeed! (I especially love the phoenix on his cloak! Great work!) ((I would like to see a little more of that sword, though. From the other side, maybe? It looks detailed!)

Have to agree that he looks more like Jarlaxle Banare to me than Fulgrim !
Although im not sure on the choice of model, I do really like the paint job
Also like the use of the swooping hawk wing as the shoulder, used one of those on my loyalist EC dreadnought.

Well-executed? Very much so. A primarch? eh...

I could totally see darkening up the skin and using it for Jarlaxle. Of course, I still think that Fulgrim would take one look at a description of Jarlaxle and say "Serfs! Get me some of that!" It may not be the look that others would want for Fulgrim, but I totally think it is the look Fulgrim would want for himself.

Its painted fantastically and put together well, but I don't see Fulgrim.

I see a more Carl Thonius style Rogue Trader figure.

A hundred people can look at a portrait that is considered a "masterpiece" and see it in a hundred different ways - it's all a matter of interpretation after all - but if only five of them declare it "art", does that make it any less a masterpiece ?

OP : Whilst not how I would have envisioned Fulgrim, I can see where you're coming from and applaud your fresh interpretation and excellent execution. This mini is so full of outstanding features that I won't insult it by highlighting any one above the others.

Cheers for the feedback guys. I appreciate that it's tricky to create something so personal to some. Everyone will have their own interpretation of the character, and this is mine.

@reaper6; cheers man, that's exactly what I needed to hear. I love this model and it's been a frustrating experience reading a few comments (the ones on this forum haven't been so bad- sonfalcon's dismissive 'eh' was irritating to read - so thank you everyone for at least be willing to consider this).

Didn't read my whole comment did you?

I said your execution was flawless. However, I don't see this as a primarch. Even if Fulgrim was a smaller, more effete one, this doesn't say "Primarch".

Awesome painting. I feel like the model is a great depiction of fulgrim, although perhaps in a less literal sense than most of us on dakka are accustomed to. I think its awesome, and his disapproving facial expression is perfect. i have to ask though, is this a kingdom death model? or a custom sculpt?

Thats a very nice model and you have done an amazing paint job. The bottom of the cloak is particular excellent!

However, my eye was instantly drawn to the poor finish on the base rim. :( A quick rub down and repaint would give the mini the final finish it deserves!

I'm now going straight to ebay to see if I can get one!

@solofalcon (sorry for getting your name wrong in my first post). I did read the whole comment, it want long and I still find the 'eh' irritating. Please define what you mean by the term primarch then perhaps I can give you a meanigful response.

@smeezela; cheers dude. It is indeed a kingdom death model. The detail is fantastic; I'd highly suggest purchasing one.

@emperos champion;
Thank you.

@angelofvengeance; this is probably a futile question but please tell me what definines the quality of primarch-y-ness? Please describe what you mean by the term, how do you qualify it?

Alright guys, let's keep the comments on track here.

Unless I am mistaken, no one knows what a Primarch looks like out of armor, so, who knows, maybe it is perfectly spot on!

Regardless, this is obviously and by definition an artistic interpretation, try to set aside your preconceptions and just appreciate the model for what it is, even if it doesn't quite fit your idea for the size or breadth of a Primarch. There is still plenty to comment on removed from that context, a lot of touches in style, clothing and colors that are pretty Fulgrim'ish if you look past his frame, and definitely some pretty great painting too.

Comments consisting of 'Not Primarchy enough' or badgering the OP to agree with that point of view as if he has to see it your way, as if there is a right or wrong is annoying and bordering on rude at a certain point.

So, from here on, let's just assume that not everyone will picture this as a primarch scale, and move on to other types of comments with it please.

Thanks -
