Hey all,
So I'm having a bit of a dilemma in deciding what army to run with in 40k. I've painted two armies before (Blood Angels, and Crimson Fists) but sold them to friends of mine, so I have never actually played. Well I've decided its time to get back into it. The only problem is that I'm deployed and am kind of stuck just reading up on the different army's fluff. Any one have any tips for picking an army? I was leaning towards Space Marines again, but I'm open to any suggestions. I like the idea of an army that is stylish, but can also hold their own. Mainly I'm just looking to have fun playing the game, and more importantly having fun assembling, and painting my warriors. I'm not looking to play in tournaments just yet (maybe someday). So any tips or suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Well, I'd consider Dark Angels. They got a new codex. In fact, DA can be played well at the competitive level and they have decent units like Dark Knights and Black Knights.

I agree with the above poster. not to mention DA are part of the newest box set meaning they can be readily available via ebay for a good price. Their models are very nice. If you like bikes you can go one way, if you like terminators you can go the other. Or combine the two it is completely up to you.

Their newest terminator sets are quite nice. They have a fresh codex so you know you are getting something up to date.

If not DA you could look at Grey Knights or to stay along the lines of space marines you could try Space Wolves. Two competitive armies with nice models. And very quick and easy to paint to high standards.

Chaos space marines are in the boxed set as well. Their lore is amazing, they are fun to play (you can choose wich god to follow) and some builds can be pretty competitive.

How about orks? They were my first love, and there are a ton of things you can do with them. They have a good mix of competitiveness (nob bikers, lootas, deff rollas) and funniness (deff rollas, Weirdboyz, shokk attack guns, bomb squigs, ramshackle vehicles, to name a few).

2nd the Orks, they were my second army and are more fun oriented than BA or other marines in my opinion. The randomness and just balls to the walls mentality of Orks make them fun.

Do you want to sit back and shoot? Get in people's face? Fast moving and strategic, slow and powerful? Any thoughts on what kind of style you gravitate to in other games?

Nurgle Chaos Space Marines. Strong, durable, relentless.

Infinite conversion potential to make yourself a beautiful and custom army.

I'd go with Eldar. You wanted stylish and fun to paint and assemble, which they certainly are. I think they are one of the prettiest armies on the board when painted well, and they are fun to paint and assemble as well. I think that the wraithlords (and wraithguard) are especially gorgeous on the table.

I would also say go with Eldar (im a loyalist marine and chaos player and im going with Eldar I already have my first purchases planned (a battle force and Farsee + warlock body guard box). Plus while Eldar may not be the strongest codex ever they look to be very fun to play and when you win with Eldar you will feel great as you will have had to fight hard to get that win.

Space Wolves! Fun army, easy to use, lots of cool stuff that really make them stand out and just a couple of troop boxes you can make standard troops, elites and hq units.

In your nightmares...

Well, don't start with DE. In the words of the Admiral,it's a trap!

Space Marines or Orks are easy to play, and in the case of the latter open up all kinds of possibilities for silliness.

(What is the problem with dark eldar?)

Thanks everyone for all the input its been very helpful. So far I've been able to narrow it down to either one of the crat world eldar, or orks. I do really enjoy the lore of the eldar and their paint schemes, but I also enjoy the cool/crazy things you can do with the orks. Even though I'm leaning more toward Eldar, I have to say a close runner up would be the chaos marines of nurgle, I really like the look of those plague marines. With that being said I'm still reading over some of your posts and exploring the links yall sent. I do appreciate the pictures some of you posted of your troops, Very very nice. Thanks again! Oh and if you got em keep the suggestions coming
