Hoary Long Fang with Lascannon
|
This is for the Stone River Tournament in TN, where all the scenarios are based off of a Civil War battle (which is pretty cool in itself), hence the weird point total (1864 being the year of the battle)
HQ:
Rune Priest (runic armor, chooser, living lightning, jaws, warlord) 130
Rune Priest (diviniation, chooser) 110
Elites
3 Wolf Guard (1 termie with combi melta and power axe, one power armor with combi melta, one power armor with power axe) 89
5 Wolf Scouts (1 MG) (this squad takes the power armor, combi melta WG) 85
Troops
8 grey hunters (WS, PG, rhino) (this squad takes the codex RP and the axe WG) 175
10 grey hunters (WS, PG, PG, power axe, rhino) 220
10 grey hunters (WS, PG, PG, MOTW, rhino) 220
5 grey hunters (WS, MG, drop pod) (this squad takes the terminator combi melta) 125
5 grey hunters (flamer, las/plas razorback) 150
5 grey hunters (flamer, las/plas razorback) 150
Heavy Support
5 Long Fangs (4ML, 1LC) (this squad takes the second RP, who mans the quad gun) 155
5 Long Fangs (4ML, 1LC)
Fortifications
Aegis with quad gun 100
General strategy, the drop pod acts as a suicide distraction, hopefully popping somehting scary on arrival. I've found that unit to be incredibly effective at both killing off valuable enemy pieces and serving to draw a ton of enemy attention. Ideally it gets assaulted, where WS + terminator armor is scary. Sometimes the scouts show up in turn 2 to add to the chaos, or they can pop out somewhere else and melta something/distract
The three rhinos take the midfield, with the RP rhino slightly behind. The PA/Axe WG is there to body guard the RP, eating challenges when needed, or cutting through TEQ if needed (poorly, yes, but still). The MOTW grey hunters are there if I MUST throw a unit into a horde, and the PA grey hunters if I must sacrifice someone to TEQ. IDeally the three packs support each other with plasma/jaws/lightning. I know rhinos are considered nerfed in 6e, but I find that so long as they can get my Grey Hunters in position to rapid fire and counter attack, they're still extremely effective.
The two razorbacks and flamer squads hold rear objectives and defend the gun line against deep strike as needed. The flamers work for accumulating wounds and I've found las/plas works great for gunline support. The plas can whittle down nasty enemies that get to my side of the board, and the lascannon works great at range for added shooting.
The two long fangs abuse the aegis and the RP gives them rerolls and mans the quad gun with BS2
It's obviously weak against flier spam, but I don't really have any true anti air options on hand, so I have to hope the quadgun and prescience are enough.
Thoughts? Criticisms? Improvements?

General Hood's Tennessee campaign or Sherman's march to the sea?
And which side do the Space Wolves go on?
I suppose they're wearing grey...
This list is very similar to a 2000 point list I played with all through last year. It should do well.

Get another squad of long fangs, you need to take full advantage of how amazing they are.

Gregknuckle: They take the real world terrain from the Batle of Stones river (particularly the bridge) and make various scenarios around it, rather than basing it around the whole campaign. So I suppose my grey could fight with either General Bragg or General Rosencrans.
Sir Mammoth: As I play 90% friendly games, and three squads of LFs would get me murdered, I only have another half squad. If I could get another squad put together in time, what would you reccomend I drop? Both the Scouts and the Drop Pod squad seem like good candidates to hit the chopping block, but I really like both of those units (the suicide drop pod because it works maybe 75% of the time, and the Scouts because I am a Cavalry Scout, and I am unofficially required to play Thunderwolf Cav or Scouts in my lists)
Erik: I'm at Fort Campbell.

Scouts out. I play Blood Angels and I was toying with the idea of putting the red over white on my flyers. Sadly I didn't get around to it before I left the CAV and came to Ft. Campbell.

Made the following changes:
HQ:
Rune Priest (runic armor, chooser, living lightning, jaws, warlord) 130
Rune Priest (diviniation, chooser) 110
Elites
5 Wolf Guard (one power axe, four combi meltas)(drop pod) 155
Troops
8 grey hunters (WS, PG, rhino) (this squad takes the codex RP and the axe WG) 175
10 grey hunters (WS, PG, PG, power axe, rhino) 220
10 grey hunters (WS, PG, PG, MOTW, rhino) 220
5 grey hunters (flamer, las/plas razorback) 150
5 grey hunters (flamer, las/plas razorback) 150
Heavy Support
5 Long Fangs (4ML, 1LC) (this squad takes the second RP, who mans the quad gun) 155
5 Long Fangs (4ML, 1LC)
5 Long Fangs (5ML)
Fortifications
Aegis with quad gun 100
Basically I replaced the grey hunter suicide squad and wolf scout suicide squad with a wolf guard suicide squad (why have two groups with two meltas when I can have one with four, and practically gurantee I kill something?) and added another Long Fang unit (which required some desperate conversions to get the MLs together, haha)
Thoughts?

Quick correction, BFSR is a 1863 point event not 1864 (didnt add up your total just wanted to make sure).
Also, I'm not sure I like the idea of swapping a troop unit for another long fang squad that will be extremely vunerable to all your opponents non-antiarmor shooting.
I bring up the troops as BFSR traditional has a lot of objective based missions in it.

5 troop units is plenty, and I wouldn't worry too much about your Long Fangs being vulnerable to 'non-antiarmor' shooting. Most of that kind of shooting needs to be within 24" while and your long fangs can reach out and touch people 48" away.
I like the list. One comment. While the "drop in and melta in the face" tactic is always one of my personal favorites, don't be afraid to move a couple of wolf guard into your troop units if the mission warrants it. Remember that you don't have to decide until you deploy, and you might not need 4 meltaguns to vaporize the target - you may want to save one or two for squad leaders depending on the situation.

You're probably right, my perspective is skewed by my MSU DE list where 6 troops are pretty much manditory and anything my opponent deploys on foot dies at a rate of about 15+ marines a turn.

Yeah I noticed that a few days ago, but was hoping no one would call me out on it, haha. My second list is at 1860, so I should be okay (unless I can find something to take for three points)
Grugknuckle: Yeah, if it makes sense I'll task the melta WG to the Razorback squads and two to Long Fangs (where they can be abative wounds, if nothing else), and drop the pod somewhere it gives my Rhinos some cover as they advance. No sense in sacrificing first blood if there are no vehicles to pop.
Thanks for the feedback all

Figured since I asked you guys for help, I'd tell you how I did (I suppose technically this is a Battle Reports post, but I wanted to make sure the people who helped me saw it)
I went with the second list, with one major change. A last second tragic accident cost me a Razorback, so I dropped a RB from my list, the CoTS off of the prescience RP, and a single Grey Hunter. In return I added a Lone Wolf CF/SS in TDA with one Fenrisian Wolf Battle Buddy (this particular Lone Wolf wears all black, and is named Sven the Returned) and put melta bombs on my Warlord RP
All maps are symmetrical with a river running through the center (not normally going straight), and a bridge dead center on the board.
Game 1:
Verus Space Wolves. He was running GH squads at 7 or 8 men with Wolf Guard, some plasma, some flamer, some melta. He had two RPs, both with codex powers (I didn't realize how annoying LL is). He had two Vindicators, a dakka Pred, and a ton of las/plas RBs, an Aegis, and a Terminator Lone Wolf with PW/SB running the Quadgun. Game type was custom scenario, 3 objectives placed by players (2 on my side, 1 on his), and one in the center of the board (the bridge). Deployment was hammer and anvil, I had first turn.
He did a pretty good job bubble wrapping, but not good enough. Melta suicide squad dropped in on turn 1 and removed one Vindicator, Long Fangs took the Demolisher cannon off of another. My Quad Gun took a HP off of his QG. Rhinos moved up, and LL killed a Razorback.
The rest of the game was mostly us maneuvering on objectives, picking off vehicles with LL, and QGs shooting each other. Sven killed the injured Vindicator, but survived the mission. I won, with two primaries to his one, and First Blood. I would say I won fairly handidly, because my three Long Fang squads continued to be annoying all game, and he effectively lost all of his heavy support turn 1 (the Dakka Pred got some kills but died to ML spam on turn 3)
Highlight: I cast JOTWW into a mass of his GHs (5 or so), but over one of my own GHs. My guy fails initiative, all of his survive.
MVP: Melta suicide squad, removed a Vindicator, survived a turn (ice blood river for the win), assaulted and tied up a grey hunter squad in the backfield)
Game 2:
Verus Vanilla with IG allies. He is running Librarian with combat squadded tactical squads, two Storm Talons, two Storm Ravens. IG Blob (35 or so), Primaris Psycher, some other HQ unit, Vendetta, Aegis with Comms Relay, Earthshaker cannon with techmarine. Scenario is all Infantry are scoring, you score if the game ends with Infantry units across the river. Secondary Objectives, kill infantry units in the first two turns, also standard secondaries. His list is about 20% painted. Sigh.
Deployment type is Dawn of War, and the river on this map runs diagnol across. He deploys in the back right corner (from my perspective), where crossing the river is fairly easy for him. So I put the far side of my gun line on the left side, where my river crossing is close, and the rhino mass on the right side.
He gets first turn, Earthshaker kills nothing. Melta squad and Long Fangs kill the Earthshaker and techmarine. Long Fangs kill a few of the blob with fraks. Rhinos advance up into ruins.
Turn two all the fliers come on. I intercept a Storm Talon and immobilize and kill it. Most of their fire goes into the Rhinos, who cover save all but one glance and one pen (ruins for the win!). One Long Fang squad is forced to go to ground, but takes no casualties. The rest of the game is rhinos moving up the board to cross the river, and me snap shooting into fliers. I kill a Vendetta and a Talon, and force some of the other fliers into jink mode (what I call it when he is only making snap shots). I lose all my rhinos right in front of the blob, but they have more than done their job (and Jaws has sniped out both IG HQs), he is forced to deploy tac marines to keep me from tabling the blob crossing the river. On the last turn he multi assaults all my GHs to keep them from scoring across the river, but their standards are popped. The tactical marines and blob all loser morale, and run off the board or across the river. I run a Long Fang squad across the river (it curved over towards my gun line) to give me an additional point, and I beat the flier spam!
Highlight: Definitely him losing the multi assault and losing all of his scoring.
MVP: RHINOS! They did their job, and survived for a long time due to cover.
Game 3:
Versus IG. Master of Ordinance, Plasma Russ, Aegis with QG, HWS with LCs, many Chimeras, two Vendettas, Marbo. Dawn of War Deployment, one objective on each side of the map, only primary scoring option is to control your opponent's objective at the end of the game. Normal secondaries, plus killing any Troops unit during the first two turns. We basically run the same strategy, running our transports to flank, but I go right, and he comes from my left. (so we play ring around the rosies). I leave the Razorback to my left to delay him. He has first turn and manages to kill an entire LF squad with multi lasers, quad gun, ordinance, plasma, etc). Turn one the Melta squad whiffs on the Plasma Russ, only doing one glance (but somehow one of them survives long enough to kill all the Lascannon teams on turn 2). The remaining LFs and Razorback manage to immobilze two Chimeras, delaying his rush. I kill his QG with snapshots from Rhino hatches.
His Vendettas come on in turn 2 and kill a Rhino (QG makes one jink). But by turn 3 I'm almost on his objective and he has to go to hover mode to drop a vets in the way. My Grey Hunters stop to kill his vets, and my Lone Wolf actually charges and kills a Vendetta. At this point, I'm basically out of Long Fangs, but I've delayed his own advanced with my Razorback and half GH squads, and I'm just about to capture his objective. However, we are running out of time and call it after turn 4. We are both just outside of line breaker range, and neither of us has a primary. He got first blood, and I killed a troops unit in turn 2, so it's a draw.
Highlight: Lone Wolf killing Vendetta!
MVP: Lone Wolf. What a kill
Game 4:
Versus Dark Eldar venom (with some raiders) spam. Three Ravagers. Aegis and QG. Archon (I think) and some other stuff. Beautifully painted Army. Vanguard Strike, modified kill points (HQ worth 3, elites and heavy support worth 2, troops and fast attack 1, dedicated transports worth 1 or 2 depending on what they're carrying). Judge decided Lone Wolf is worth reverse points (ie I can win points by his death, instead of it being neutral), which meant I had to get him killed. I've never played DE before, so I am caught off guard by the amount of dakka he brings.
I know I shouldn't use the melta squad because they're worth two points to kill, he has nothing worth using melta on, and I can break them off into squads and take away two KPs from him entirely. But, they're fun, and I like the diversion. I have first turn, I drop them by a Ravanger and take off two splinter cannons. Ooops. Way to roll ones while shooting guys. I still get first blood by popping transports with Long Fangs.
I run two rhinos up the right side of the board, and just shoot venoms everywhere. The command rhino sits in the back corner and shoots LL across the board. Long story short, he kills two Long Fang squads, and the two full grey hunter squads (but they do some damage, killing several vipers), obviously the Melta guys all die immediately on turn 2, and so does the drop pod. The LF squad with the RP stays alive the whole game, but also spends the entire game going to ground behind the Aegis. I still use prescience on them, and pretend venoms and raiders are fliers. 10 shots is still one or two sixes, and against armor 10, that's workable. LL kills all three Ravangers.
At the end of turn 5, a glance on the board would say that he was winning, but I killed almost all of his venoms, and a few of his squads, and all his HS. I still had a full command squad in a Rhino, a full half squad, most of a LF squad (their prescience friend died in turn 5), and a three man GH squad (down from 5). So, by KPs and with first blood, I won!
Highlight: Two venoms hullpointing themselves at the same time on ruins
MVP: RP. LL won me the game.
Final record, 3-0-1. Not good enough to place in the top two (although looking forward for the final standings to post, 82 total players), but very satisfying. Especially beating the five flier army.
