We just started doing video battle reports for our group Hammertime40K, based in South Derbyshire in the UK.
Previously all of our reports have been picture-based: taken by me, edited by me, uploaded/written/blahblahblah by me. The results have been good (compare this recent one to one of our earlier ones) but it takes 2-3 hours to edit the photos with text, write everything up and get it uploaded. With a couple of games a week, a full-time job and models needing paint it takes ages!
With video batreps, the editing takes less than 90 minutes and I'm sure I can get that down to an hour with just a little practice.
So we recently started a campaign using the Planetary Empires rules, and I decided to start filming them and edit them using Windows Movie Maker - something simple and it gets the job done. I don't want to clutter up the thread so I'll just put both of the first battles we've done this week here, and if they get a good reception I'll just add new posts to the thread to bump it to the top
Here's the first video, featuring Relictors (counts-as Blood Angels) against Dark Angels
The forces were:
1500 points each
Relictors (Counts-as Blood Angels) – Shane
Relicarch (Warlord)
15 jump Death Company
2 x 10 Assault Troop squads
2 x Predators with Autocannons
2 x Land Speeders with Meltas
Dark Angels – Jack
Azrael (Warlord)
Battle Standard
5 Terminators with Power Fists, Plasma Cannon
5 x Ravenwing bikes with attack bike
2 squads of Tactical Marines, combat-squadded
Land Raider Crusader
(being the first video, I made a couple of mistakes, such as not getting the focus right in places and somehow introducing the armies twice)
----------------------------------------------------------
And the second battle, which took place last night, me playing Chaos Space Marines versus Space Wolves
The forces were:
1250 points each
Chaos Space Marines – Frank
Abaddon with Terminator bodyguard
2 x 5 Chosen
5 Spawn
5 Havocs
Space Wolves – David W
Runepriest with Rockfist and Terminator bodyguard
2 x 10 Grey Hunters
1 x 5 Grey Hunters with Wolf Banner & Wolfen in Rhino
Dreadnought
(Windows Movie Maker doesn't let you put drop shadows or backgrounds behind text so the writing at the beginning can be hard to read, but this one is a little better in places - we're getting there!)
I hope you guys enjoy watching these if you want to check out the other written battle reports just click here to visit the group's website. We'd like to hear what you guys think!
Here's our third campaign battle report, with Relictors (counts-as Blood Angels) against Space Wolves)
Hammertime: 25th February
1500 points each
Relictors – Shane
Mephiston
2 x 7 Jump Assault Marines
2 x 10 Sternguard in Drop Pod
Bael Predator
Predator with Lascannons
Space Wolves – David W Runepriest and Terminator bodyguard
5 Grey Hunters in Drop Pod
2 x 10 Grey Hunters
2 x 5 Long Fangs
I'd appreciate any feedback on the video so we can make it better! I'm working on more lighting and some better software so on-screen text will be clearer.

A few rule mistakes spotted, reserves automatically come in turn 4, no need to roll for them just do reserve movement as normal, Mephy cannot join squads, it seems he was put with Assault marines in this game,

Mephiston wasn't actually part of the squad, they just served as his 'bodyguard' so I listed them together. That was my mistake. As for reserves coming in automatically, I didn't spot that in the rulebook but if so, yeah that would have changed the nature of the battle! there's usually one or two rules we miss, we're just playing for fun so that sometimes will happen - we're getting much better about that though
Tear OF The Angel wrote:What do you guys play the pringles cans as. To me they should be impassable and blocking. There is really no reason to terrain that high.
They are going to be painted (very soon!) as storage silos like you would find in an industrial environment, they're basically something free and easy to make into LOS-blocking terrain. They definitely block line of sight, but since they were inside the deployment zone in the first and third games they had combat-squadded Marines put on top (like they'd climbed to the top before the battle started). You can get manufactured terrain about the same height, so I'm sorry but I don't understand why you see 'no reason for terrain to be that high'
In the bat rep the space wolves guy was saying he was shooting at meph and the assault marines, hence why I thought they were in a unit. The pringle cans are def very high, I would at least put some levels on them as each level is meant to be 3 inches tall for movement purposes, it would matter if they were being charged.
Overall, some good bat reps there, I watched the first few when you posted them and sat and watched that one, so thanks!

I understand now, and I agree the cans/silos need some walkways around them. I have a water tower (seen in the first batrep) that I had to add walkways too, so the cans will be getting them as well. I tend to be more into making & painting terrain than my gaming models, and then I start loads of projects so much of the terrain is in a half-finished state at the moment. But yes - walkways around the storage silos, definitely!
Was thinking exactly that, walkways, looking forward to seeing them and the armies finished!

Here's our latest battle report, with Chaos Space Marines (me) against Dark Angels. We did one of the Fallen scenarios (not sure if it's the only one?) and...well you can see what happens for yourself!
Made sure to use fully painted terrain this time
Unfortunately not all the models are painted :( but we're either adding new units or painting the units we have between games, so hopefully if you've seen the earlier videos you can see improvements.
I'm also looking into getting a GoPro-like camera that has autofocus, the camera we're using (Canon S95) is very good but has fixed focus once you start video recording.
