Finished up some halberd-wielding warriors. Pic below.

I plan on going back to touch up some details when I have time later (and do the whole 'banner' thing), and one thing I want to improve but have no idea how to is the wooden shafts of the halberds and the standard. They look flat and boring right now. What would you guys suggest to make them look more interesting? I've seen a few wood grain tutorials, but they're for flat surfaces.

Good link. Chips and gouges in the woodwork would certainly be the obvious variations, if you don't want the 'woodgrain' effect. And random old dark bloodstains.

Tried it on two so far. Not sure if I like it or not, but I think it's a step up from flat. Thoughts?
