Hi all! Long time 40k fan here, though only through a bunch of other mediums (mostly video games and fiction). How did I get here? Well . . .

I was messing around on ebay a few weeks ago and came across a copy of Batllemasters for sale. I don't know how many of you are familiar with that game, but it is basically a slimmed-down Warhammer Fantasy Battle game for kids that was made by Hasbro and Games Workshop back in the early 90s. It was hugely popular in my neck of the woods (western New York, USA) and I really wanted to buy it, but it has been out of print for over a decade now so a copy of the game runs about 300 bucks, if you're lucky. But that got me thinking, I loves me some Warhams so why not buy the real thing? 40k was the next logical step. Also, I spend too much time in front of this damn computer and my wife just started working nights, so I need a reason to get out of the house. I plan on finding a group to play with, eventually.

I just picked up Dark Vengeance. I wasn't sure about it, but the shop owner convinced me by pointing out that the rule book included in the game more than pays for the rest of the box, considering the price of the 6th edition manual. Also, I know I want to roll with Space Marines, since they are just my favorite "part" of the 40k universe; in this regard I am unashamedly a huge Space Marine fanboy dork. And I like the Dark Angels, too, though I had wanted to play a Space Wolves army. But I think I can get into these guys. So hopefully I have a small army I can build off of, and maybe I can unload these Chaos guys if I don't end up using them.

So . . . yeah. That's it. I will be pestering you guys with a buttload of questions, so I hope you don't mind. I am also looking forward to painting, because I don't have an artistic bone in my entire body and you have to start somewhere.

Thanks for reading this big dumb post.

And the best part is, if anyone I play with accuses me of jumping on a bandwagon I can legitimately claim ignorance. Because I have no idea what the hell I'm doing!

I had that game, and LOVED it! I'm in Western Massachusetts and that along with Hero Quest is what got me into mini war gaming generally and GW specifically. The odd thing for me is that I haven't ever really played Warhammer Fantasy but I've been doing 40K since 3rd edition dropped.

The Dark Vengeance box set is really nice. I'm starting a Dark Angels army and I think the models in there are great as they form a solid backbone to a basic army. My friend plays Chaos, so we split the box and it worked out perfectly.

My goal was to buy Battle Masters and have my brother over to play, like when we were kids. Except this time we could have a few beers and we likely wouldn't end up fighting over who won.

If they re-released it tomorrow, I'd buy it.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Yep! It is kinda funny looking back, the game has GW stamped all over it. Rampaging ogre? Check. Canon that can misfire and kill your own dudes? Check. Wolves? Check.

The Dark Vengeance is a very good way to start with 40k. I bought it mostly for the rulebook (For pretty much the same price, rulebook + lots of minis? Yes, please!) and an awesome limited edition mini since I started a month before with Necrons.

If you want, you can probably sell with relative ease the Chaos half of the DV. Sold mine just like that and kept the Dark Angels miniatures that I hope to paint one day
