Hi all

I have been looking starting a necron army for quite a while (between a couple of other options) and think its about time to start. What is the viability of a scarab farm army with 9 tomb spyders.

I ask because I play Deathwing at the moment, so the play style is wildly different and I don't really know where to go from there though. I don't want to go into many flyers though. Also, what are the recommended hq's and supports for this style or army? I'm thinking a doomsday ark or some annihilation barges...

Thanks

Doomsday Arks and Spyders are competing for a space, however you could easily go with one Arc and two Spyders as they run considerably well together, as the Spyders/Scarabs will end up screening the Arc from Assault so it can chill and do what it does best. You could also give one of those units Fabricator Claws so it can repair and damage your big cannon takes.

The Annihilation Barge is also a HS slot, so you have some choices to make off the bat there.

Depending on what your HS looks like there are plenty of options to match up. Obviously if you're going farm you'll want a decent amount of scarabs, covering 2 or 3 of your FA slots. If you're not worried about Flyers a brick of Warriors lead by either a Phaeron Overlord or somebody like Zandrek with 2 or 3 Ghost Arcs with warriors and crypteks inside can give you a pretty solid scoring presence, plus helps your AV 13 Saturation.

From there you can spend what you have left over on maybe a squad of Wraiths if you left a Fast Attack option open, lead by a Destroyer Lord, or maybe a Tomb Stalker because it also meshes with the Doomsday Arc and the massive amount of both Gauss and AV 13 you have out there.

If you want to run a scarab farm, there are a couple of things you need.

Imotekh with a Chronotek, is a must. His lightning and Nightfighting helps cover a lot of the weaknesses you get, with lack of long range firepower. The lightning can help cover your lack of long range firepower, and the Night Fighting increased the lifespan of your swarms before you get into close combat with them. The Chronotek alllows you to reroll failed nightfighting rolls as well.

shore up on some more close combat, or close range shooting, and you'll be good to go.

Do note though, that sixth is much more focused on shooting, so the Scarab farm isn't quite what it used to be.

I've played around with some ideas, but I can't seem to fit everything in. I normally play at 1500 points. I think my biggest issue is that the two hq's which could benefit me the most (the storm lord and zandrekh) cost a lot, and also I think I light even have too many scarabs.

How does this look? It seems solid, but with no synergy...

HQ

Zandrekh - 185
Cryptek (solar pulse) - 55

Troops

Warriors (10) - 130
Warriors (10) - 130
Warriors (5) - 65
Warriors (5) - 65

Elites

FA

Scarab swarm (9) - 135
Scarab swarm (8) - 120
Scarab swarm (8) - 120

HS

Tomb spyders (3) one with fabricator claw - 160
Tomb spyders (3) - 150
Doomsday ark - 175

One piece of advice:
Scarabs come in three bases when you buy warriors.
They are, in my opinion, quite expensive to collect.

You can get away with making 4 bases from a box of warriors by having only 3 Scarabs on each base instead of 4.

Surely I can buy the bases of ebay or something. On a different note though; Would it be wise to drop a squad of scarabs, or have smaller squads and get something else instead. And how could I alter this list to get more synergy?

You can try Ebay, but from experience unless you're there until the dying seconds, and willing to pay any amount for them, you will always get sniped and/or it'll cost you far too much to justify.

try making some with green stuff. There are some tutorials out there, or also 3rd party models, if your playing group allows it. I know puppetswar has some good figs.

As I've said before, I'll figure out how to get the models later. I would like some help with how to run this list
