Hi guys, im looking to create a 1500 point competitive army list however, im starting with a 1k list so I can expand from either with more SW or an applied detachment. Please let me know what you think and if I should swap the list around.

HQ - Rune priest, runic armour, chooser of the slain. 130 points.

I was thinking of taking divination or the standard LL and JotWW

TROOP -

10 GH, 2 Meltaguns, champion with power weapon and MotW - drop pod as transport 220 points

10 GH, 2 Meltaguns, champion with power weapon and MotW - drop pod as transport 220 points

ELITE -

Lone wolf, terminator armour a pair of wolf claws and MotW 80 points

Dreadnought with a pair of twin linked autocannons 125 points

HEAVY SUPPORT -

5 LF, 4 ML - 115 points

ADDITIONAL

Ageis def line with a quad cannon - 100 points

It looks like a really good start. I'll go unit by unit with comments, but mostly my comments will be about which 'models' you should focus on. Barring any WYSIWYG problems, I won't comment on wargear.

Yes. Having a Rune Priest model is obligatory for a Space Wolf. Buy or build one with power armor. That way, you can play it as runic armor or power armor depending on your mood.

10 GH, 2 Meltaguns, champion with power weapon and MotW - drop pod as transport 220 points

Consider building a model with a wolf standard in each unit instead of the power weapon. It's a more useful piece of wargear and it's cheaper point wise. Once you begin expanding your collection of models, it would be a very easy thing to add a model with a power weapon. In fact, if you have the where-with-all to magnetize a miniature, it would be worth it to magnetize one GH's arm to take a power sword, power axe or chainsword so that you can alter his wargear from game to game.

Meltaguns - I have a lot to say. First of all, they are a good choice. You need some melta in every army. However, you may occasionally feel like fielding plasmaguns instead, so you may want to consider having two plasma guns in one unit and two meltaguns in the other. Second, there are no meltaguns in a box of space wolves. You'll have to find the bits elsewhere (ie ebay) especially if you are new to the game and this is your first collection. The meltaguns are not cheap either. If you already have an army, you'll know what I'm talking about. This is another reason go with 2 plasmaguns in one unit and 2 melta in the other.

Once you begin to expand your army, it would be a simple thing to add new models with different weapons. Or you could magnetize your special weapon dudes - but this is more difficult than the power weapon.

Lone wolf, terminator armour a pair of wolf claws and MotW 80 points

Are you going to buy a box of 5 terminators for just one Lone Wolf? If you do, make sure to magnetize the arms because you'll want to experiment with different wargear.

Dreadnought with a pair of twin linked autocannons 125 points

The dreadnought isn't worth your time IMHO, and the two autocannon arms from Forgeworld are so over-priced that you could almost get a second dreadnought or a drop pod for this dreadnought. In any case, I would highly recommend not buying the dreadnought at all until you already have 1500 points and are looking to expand to 2000.

5 LF, 4 ML - 115 points

A great choice. The hardest part will be getting the missile launcher bits, but you'll never regret it. Long Fangs with missile launchers can find a place in any SW army.

Ageis def line with a quad cannon - 100 points

Also a no brainer and totally worth it for only $30.

Thank you for the advice, im fortunate as I traded a heldrake and rhino for 20 SW 5 terminators and 5 LF.. so wouldn't need to add much to get it to the list above..

Hmmm so if I dropped the dreadnought what would U replace it with for 130 points?

If I were to drop the dread I'd throw in more long fangs just like the one you already have long fangs are just like cowbell, you're gonna want more of it!

This exactly. Your perfect Long Fang Squad is 6 Long Fangs with 5 Missile Launchers for 140 points. Then after you have that, I'd consider getting more grey hunters. Take a look at this list...

I think this is the perfect beginner Space Wolves set up. The comment I would add is that once you have 2 GH squads and 2 LF squads, if you're bored of painting grey power armor, you could prevent painters burnout by painting a drop pod, or converting a nice rune priest / wolf priest / wolf lord or whatever. Just know that you should strive to get your hands on a 30-40 Grey Hunters and ~18 Long Fangs all painted and assembled.

And you can have the LFs take a pod, leave them out of it, and it will let you drop both GH squads first turn, or 1 and a empty pod if it is tactically better for some reason.
