So I am just getting back into the game and decided to pick up the Tau. I know that I want to do a base color of Black (not a whole lot of black Tau and black is pretty). The issue I have is figuring out what to do for the other colors. I am a fan of pink and purple but I am not sure how bright/dark to do them, and what to paint pink/purple....I am not an artist by any means so not sure where to start....
Thanks for your help

I think there are a few tau painters that could help you get a better base idea of what you would like.

Using black as the primary color, you could always go Tron inspired with them and make any of the disc outer rings look like they are internally lit and glowing and flood the panel lines between armor with the colors. It would be a lot of object source lighting but done right could look great.

Not much of a fan of the first one (looks a bit rave-ish imho). I like the second one much more. Although, borrowing bob's suggestion, just doing the grooves in purple could look good.

Black/silver is always slick. I like the second pic with purple cloth. Just had a thought: wonder what a tau atmy inspired by FF7-Dirge of Cerberus "Deepground" would look like. They have similar lines...kinda
