So, the end is in sight (sort of...) After years of having a cupboard full of half finished armies and lots of grey plastic and bare metal I am finally pulling myself together. Everything I'm not going to use is being sold (anyone interested in Warhammer Dwarfs or 40k SoB?? ), my 40k board is complete, the last of my infinity models are winging their way from Wayland as I speak, only 4 models left to paint for my BFG fleet and 3 units left to buy for my Dark Eldar!

So the question now becomes what next?

Ever since DZC came out last year I have been excited about the game. I love the aesthetic, it appeals to my nostalgia for playing epic (which was the game that made me a wargamer 25 years ago - yes, I know I'm an old git ), and I love the support it has recieved with constantly updated errata, faqs and even points changes for units that 'real world' playtesting found were off (see GW? its not that hard).

All of which brings me on to the point of this thread. I love the PHR and UCM models but am torn as to which to get. How do those factions play, does one have a steeper learning curve, is there a big difference in model count, are the starter boxes worth getting for those armies? Basically, I'd like the whole 9 yards!

Thanks in advance for any info,
C_C

Have you thought about the Axis of Evil pension scheme?

I'm just starting out too but from what I've gathered, UCM have a larger model count than PHR. I too am torn between the two factions, I'm sorta leaning PHR because I prefer the drop ships and walkers, but UCM have some really cool stuff too.

Do you play 30k? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

It depends on how you want to play phr are very much move in to place and set a fire base and control an area.
Ucm are a bit faster on the ground but not as fast as either of the alien races.
Both human races are fairly tough ucm are good all round.
I would say that ucm are a bit easier to get to grips with tacticaly as the extra ground speed is a bit more forgiving if you make a mistake about when and where to drop your ground squads

The starter boxes are basically the best starting place for all the armies

Thanks - I am leaning towards PHR (for the looks more than anything) and will probably get a starter box but from what I understand the PHR box has a problem in that it comes with Ares walkers?

From reading on Hawkforum even with the points drop they are still nowhere near as good value as Odins and no list I've seen posted includes them. If I get that set am I going to end up with models i'll never use?

Probably. The only reason the other factions use their 'normal' tanks is because they have to (due to fairly locked down force org charts). All PHR walker types on the same chassis are the same unit 'type', so PHR can use their AA to fill in their 'tank' slot, freeing up room for more heavies.

It's nothing like Epic. I know you're not actually saying you think it is, but nobody should go into DzC thinking it's going to be the same sort of game. so I'm just making that clear. The DzC designer (David Lewis) actually said in one of the podcast interviews Hawk have done that he was drawn to Epic years ago but didn't actually like it, so when he was designing DzC he was trying to make the game he thought Epic should be (smaller, more mobile forces).

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

They are still usefull more so in smaller games to keep the pionts cost down but they are less usefull in larger games because of the facts stated above but i wouldnt just right them off straight away
