Just wondering how well they read and if you feel that they're worth the hefty price tag.

I bought the dark angels one on release day. i found it to be really good! The fact that you can just tap a rule and a box comes up with the details makes it worth it to me.

I have the Chaos, DA, and Empire ones.

Personally, I think they are glorious. The quick links are fantastic and the pop up references are really brilliant.

I wholeheartedly recommend them.

As to "worth the price tag:" If you're willing to pay the $50 for the hardcover, I personally think these are a ton more functional. They are not simple PDFs of the book, but rather have quite a bit of extra work put into them. I'd 'prefer' they were less, but they're absolutely worth the $50 you'd be spending on the regular codex.

Are the codices only for iPad? Or can other devices use them? They sound neat, but iPads are a bit pricey.

They're distributed through iBooks... so unless you have an iProduct you are out of iLuck.

iPad only. But the Space Marine codex I bought off iTunes has already "paid" for itself since they included the flier updates for the Storm Raven and Storm Talon. Thanks to that, I don't need the WD issue nor the Death From the Skies book. Now if only my Necron and Dark Angels codexes would do the same. :/

I haven't bought any of the Fantasy army books yet because I play Bretonnians, Ogres, and Skaven.

I really wish they'd release the rulebooks on iTunes.

My friend who owns the Space Marine iCodex says the same. He really likes that they updated the new fliers.

Superior to print codices on all regards. If you got a hipster tablet, buy them.

I got the DA codex out of curiosty and because it was my first army. It's alright and I can see the advantage of all having all your codex in one place for gaming (which I don't) but in the end i think I prefer paper.

On reflection its not paper I prefer but the portrait page layout.

I have the Necron and CSM codices on my iPad. They are good enough to make me wish I had bought the DA one for the iPad too instead of the hard cover.

The FAQ updates alone make it worth it imo.

Think of it as a codex-tax.

IF you want the digital, you need to get yourself an ipad and use ibooks. To go with your ipod, iphone and nice, hipster ilife.

You can't port the ibook across to another format either. It's one of the reasons GW went with the format.

Might just be my Ipad (gen 4), but I feel that the Chaos dex is a tad... "laggy" and slow.. I often find myself browsing through the PDF instead... I can usually find stuff quicker through the PDF or the "real" book...

But I do like the rule highlights, ie, click on a USR when you have a brain fart, and you'll get a quote from the brb, along with a page reference...

iWas a bit sceptical about these iCodices at first, but since iDon't own an iPad (iDo have an iPod but iDon't think it's worth it on such a small screen), iCouldn't exactly make my own judgment. However, a few guys at my LGS use them and, looking at them, iThink they're actually really, really useful. They're no more expensive than hardback codices and you get added portability, the ability to tap a rule or item and see its rules, automatic FAQ/Errata updates and iThink a system that allows you to quickly get to the page you want. If you're willing to spend money on an iPad in the first place, iWould say they're definitely worth it!!

They don't work on an iPod anyway.

And why is an ipad a hipster device? Only recently has anything come close to rivaling it in quality. Many of us have had them from before there were other "good" options.

They'd be a great and fun concept if they weren't complete ripoffs. They should be $20 maximum.

I'm thinking for going the iroute for portability.
I was just curious, however, how the art stands up?
Has anyone got both formats and is able to compare?

There is something to be said for having that hardback coffee-table quality art book...

They are defiantly worth it, much more useful than the books themselves as they have quick references to the rules and you can navigate around easily. Defiantly worth purchasing over a fragile paper one.

if your an aussie $50 for the digital codex is a $30 odd saving... and its easier to use, i have the CSM one and that has so much flipping back and forth for anything that 1 tap and i get the same info (wargear options, rules etc)

CSM 20,000 Pts
Daemons 4,000 (ish)
WoC over 10,000
6000+ Pts

I've got all the iCodecies.
Well worth it.
They get updated with the most recent FAQs as well.
The real test will be when the next SM codex is released.
Will they update the current one, or will I have to buy a whole new one?
Anyway, I live nowhere near a GW or FLGS so I save on postage and I get my codex on release day.
Plus I don't need to carry them when I fly between work (in the Middle East) and home (in Scotland)

It's only a $30 saving IF one has already spent the several hundred more for the ipad.

For those of us who don't already have one, that saving does not exist.

This is the first time I've ever heard a quarter inch thick electronic device that is 20% made of glass described as being less fragile then a book.

Depending on the case you buy it's very true.
