Here's my list I put together I've been playing guard for a while now and 6th has seen me stop using power blobs and here's my lit adjustment to the gun line style guard. I think it looks pretty good but I haven't played it yet. 6th edition I've spent playing smaller games getting use to the rules and such. This list Should hopefully work well with the new rules. Please give me your thoughts/advice!

HQ
Company Command Squad- 65pts.
Regimental Standard

Elites
Storm Trooper Squad- 125pts.
x2 Plasma guns

Troops
Platoon Command Squad Platoon Cost- 370pts.

Infantry Squad
Lascannon, Plasma gun

Infantry Squad
Lascannon, Plasma gun

Infantry Squad
Lascannon, Plasma gun

Infantry Squad
Lascannon, Plasma gun

Platoon Command Squad Platoon Cost- 245pts.
x4 Flamer

Infantry Squad
Auto cannon, Melta Gun

Infantry Squad
Auto cannon, Melta Gun

Infantry squad
Flamer

Fast Attack
Vendetta- 130pts.

Scout Sentinel Squadron- 100pts.
x2 Sentinels
x2 Lascannons

Heavy support
Leman Russ squadron-300pts.
x2 Leman Russ

Leman Russ Squadro- 165pts.
x1 Demolisher

Okay so game plan would be have CCS hidden giving out Ld re-rolls, while first platoon is 2 squads of 20. And Second platoons 1 squad of 2 then the third will plug line where ever needed and hold obj. Storm troopers drop take out high priority target. Vendetta anti air. Sentinels harassment and side/rear armor killing and assault squads to tie up. Leman Russ stay with infantry and just shell stuff into submission. Basically whole army just bunkers up and takes orders and fires everything they have for as long as they can.

Only thing I wish I could add is artillery but I can at higher points level. (I wish the FW medusa gun carriage wasn't so expensive money wise!)

Thanks for any help!

While I have no experience of my own, I have been watching IG builds here in order to construct my own army. From what I have observed an Aegis wall is typically used with the gunline style.

I'm not a guard expert, but those infantry squads seem really pricey. Also, aren't suicide troopers typically kitted with melta's?

Your list is a couple of bad Ld 8 rolls from running off of the board. I can see alot of problems with this list, but to fix it may not make you happy because it will be removing troops and sub-par units. When you skimp on things, it does allow you to buy more troops. Sometimes quantity can work over quality, but not in this case.

Your list breakdown...

HQ...
Your list depends on a single unit that is getting a 5+ cover save from being 'buried' behind a wall of Guardmen. Your list revolves around a 15pt piece of wargear because without it your now a single roll at Ld 8 from running. They are also BS 4 and have no guns. Putting a LC in here would realy help. Personally, I would get Creed for 4 orders a turn and at least a second CCS so your whole edge is at least covered buy the 12" banner range. I think Camo Cloaks to help keep them alive and maybe even a plasma gun to go with the LC would make them much more effective and durable.

Elites...
Melta guns are the weapon of choice... not because 4 Str 7 shots on a vehicle are bad, but the extra d6 armor pen roll seals the deal and makes sure when your throwing away the unit that it's mission is not a total failure. Personally I would ditch them for points elsewhere, but having them for linebreaker isn't a bad deal. I am on the fence about keeping them, but they need melta.

Troops...
You need Commissars in the blob for the Stubborn and Ld 9 (which is re-rolled first for the banner so you can skip the shooting a Sarge in the head) for both the Morale and Orders. I do not mind your load-outs, though for your line-up I would just stick to LCs and Plasma as Meltas are not the most effective for a gunline as the plasma gives you more synergy with the lasguns (both being rapid fire weapons with the same range). I do like the Melta to avoid 'Get's Hot!' rolls, but in this case that is all that it has going for it. I do like Melta bombs on sergeants for the ability to hurt a MC if it gets in CC with you if you fail on the shooting. Ditch the lone flamer squad and get those special weapons on the other PCS. I would look at 4x Sniper Rifles, though if you get a second Valk this is the unit that should be in it.

Fast...
Vendettas x2. The Sentinels are AV 10 (even with a cover save, bolters will glance you to death) and are BS 3 that you can't give orders to. You are more or less paying 100pts for 1 round of shooting 2 LCs that will miss 50% of the time and then give your opponnet a Victory point for destroying your unit. Your already doing this with the Storm Troopers, so this is a hail mary. This is not the Edition for walkers...that was last edition, and Sentinels were not that great in 5th.

Heavies...
I do not mind the Russes, but I have to question why your not doing Executioners or Punishers with Sponsons (plasma and bolter respectivily) for tanks your not planning to move? Your LCs in your blobs (and CCS) with 'Bring it Down!' are your long range AT. I can understand not wanting to deal with the Plasma sponsons 'Get Hot!' issuesm but the main gun doesn't have the issue and since it isn't ordnance allows your sponsons to fire at full BS. Pask in a Punisher sitting in your middle with two plasma-cutioners on each side will make anyone not want to move foreward which allows your LCs to tear them apart. When you have 3 heavy slots, there is no reason to Squad up the tanks. Put them all in thier own slot so they can all fire on whatever they want.

Get a ADL with a quad gun and place that gun behind the wall to give it a cover save. Way I see your lay-out for a standard game, I can see 3 blobs. One in the middle, surrounding the Punisher behind the ADL to give both a cover save. Your two CCSs 24" apart with this blob right smack dab in the middle at the ends of the ADL (which is 28" long). I will point out Creed has a great BS to man the Quad Gun/Icarus Cannon. Then on either side at the ends are your last blobs and plasma-cutioners, maybe even wraped around them to protect them from DSing melta fire.

That is my suggestion to do your gunline, or shat you should be shooting for. Maybe you can't fit in 3+ blobs at that point, maybe you have to go down to two. Then maybe you only need the one CCS then. Maybe you can only do two tanks instead of 3. Same idea, just adapt to give yourself the most coverage.

I took into account BLKtoms advice and ended up with this. Thoughts on this list now I dropped alot of stuff but I gave alot of upgrades to existing units and brought the wall. I think this will be a pretty cool list. And effective. Thoughts?

I ended up 5 under so throw on 2 bolt pistols to any of sergeants.

I tend to shy away from expensive weapons on bs3 platoon command squads. Flamers work well with them, as they obviously don't use bs. Put them on the CCS instead.

Yeah, the PCS doesn't need the Plasma. Give them 4x Sniper Rifles or 4x Flamers. That 40pts saves should be a Icarus LC (plus a melta bomb or 2-3 more bolt pistols) for the ADL or Camo Netting for your two tanks. If the tanks don't move, the netting gives them Stealth (+1 Cover save) and having the ADL block off at least 25% LoS means they would have a 4+ cover save against all glances and pens. This should keep them alive longer till someone outflanks or DSs next to them, so use your infantry to protect them as best as you can. Otherwise I think the list looks fine... wish you could have a 2nd Vendetta and Executioner, but point limits are point limits. Gives you something to shoot for in a 1850pt game (that is kinda standard in my meta).

Thing is, are /you/ happy with the list? Your the one playing so I hope it serves you well. Try a few games with the list and see how it pans out for you, then tweak it to your play style. Good luck!
