So ive been thinking alot about trying to make a few tac squads in my army to look kinda like marcus and the rest of the cog gang from gears of war. To me thats how i picture my veteran squads. Is this straying too far away from the 40k setting or not. Ideas and opinions very appreciated.

Even if it strays too far away from the 40k setting, who cares? It's your hobby, they are your models. You could even create a full GOW army count-as Space Marines 
But to answer your question: MACHINE GUNS WITH CHAINSAWS!!! If that doesn't sound 40k, nothing does!

Heroclix did a GOW set a couple years back. You might be able to find some cheap singles and switch the heads for SM helmets
If I ever played marines I would have bought a few lots of the old Star Wars minis troopers and modded them. There was a Haloclix line too I thought would be good for scrapping. (I'm not a big fan of poltroons I think is what I'm saying.))
