I'm looking for some ways to distinguish my squads apart. However, i don't like really flashy squad markings like Huge stripes on the helmet. I know its pretty picky but if anyone has some input that would be great.

I have thought about doing a stripe on the bases so the minis look uniform as i think they should be and still have a good way to tell individual squads apart from a distance.

What about just a Roman numeral or a stenciled number on the side of the helmet? Nothing big.

You could also try painting the lightning bolt/circle regiment marking on the shoulder in different colors instead of red/white.

Hi there, i reckon the stripe on the bases is a decent idea, if you put them all on the rear off the model, it won't distract from the actual model. i think if you did different helmets it would detract from the model as whole. Also great choice of regiments, steel legion are by far my favourite IG army. You doing a blog on them? Would be cool to see some pictures.

I didn't think to, i might have to go ahead and do that. i only have a bout 15 painted so far. So it wouldn't be too hard to start up. If you are interested i don't see why i shouldn't :-) As for the markings i think the base is the best option...they don't have any body armor to put markings on and i definately think marking the helmet could take away from the model itself.
