Hoary Long Fang with Lascannon
|
I just did really well in an 1863 point tournament running the following list (went 3-0-1, with a win against a 5 flier spam Vanilla/IG army and the draw against mech Guard running two Vendettas), but think I got lucky in that I didn't draw any Helldrakes. After the list I'll explain what I'm thinking of doing, and why, and hopefully get some advice.
HQ:
Rune Priest (runic armor, chooser, living lightning, jaws, melta bombs, warlord) 135
Rune Priest (diviniation) 100
Elites
5 Wolf Guard (one power axe, four combi meltas)(drop pod) 155
Lone Wolf (TDA, CF, Wolf) 95
Troops
7 grey hunters (WS, PG, rhino) (this squad takes the codex RP and the axe WG) 160
10 grey hunters (WS, PG, PG, power axe, rhino) 220
10 grey hunters (WS, PG, PG, MOTW, rhino) 220
5 grey hunters (flamer, las/plas razorback) 150
5 grey hunters (flamer, las/plas razorback) 150
Heavy Support
5 Long Fangs (4ML, 1LC) (this squad takes the second RP, who mans the quad gun) 155
5 Long Fangs (4ML, 1LC)
5 Long Fangs (5ML)
Fortifications
Aegis with quad gun 100
I can more or less handle normal fliers with mass MLs, prescience, and cover saves. That said, I have no answer for a Helldrake. I have a 2k tourney coming up (Nashcon) and am thinking of adding a Vendetta, obviously I have to pay an IG tax. I really don't want allies, but I feel like GW has forced my hand by not giving me any organic anti air. I know one flier is generally considered ineffective, but I only want it to kill air units (and maybe harass ground targets), not win the game for me. I don't want to go flier spam because I honestly think it's too easy to get tabled by a good alpha strike list, and it can make objective based games difficult. (Necrons not included)
So I was thinking I could add a single Vendetta, and use the required units to fit into my existing play style. I figure I could take a Primaris Psycher with Diviniation, and have him replace the gunline RP (not as good, obviously, but cheaper at least). Then, I could drop the 5 man dismount Grey Hunters (who normally hold rear objectives slash delay attacks on the Long Fangs) and add a Veteran Squad.
I'm not really sure how to arm the vet squad. I have some random Valhallans I could use, or I could buy some new IG stuff. Are they useful at all with just lasguns? Especially sitting behind an Aegis helping out my Long Fangs? I feel like a mortar team might be worth 5 points, or I could give them lascannons and add more ridiculousness to my Long Fang missle/LC spam. Alternatively, a heavy flamer might be helpful. I could theoretically drop that Razorback and replace it with a Chimera, but at that point I feel like I'm selling out my Wolves.
In short, I'm only considering a Vendetta because I feel like the game is forcing me to, but if I take it, I don't want the units I take with it to be useless, but I also don't want to change the general playstyle of my Army (maximizing the grey hunters on the midfield, killing things en masse with Long Fangs)
Also, the Primaris Psycher can cast prescience on my Long Fangs, right? And he can join the LF squad and shoot the quad gun (using the split fire like the rest of the squad)
Thanks!
