As a chaos player, you can never have to many spikey bits. I suppose this would go well for Orks as well, but anyone that likes sharp pointed objects could benifit from this quick and easy method.
Step 1, gather as much old sprue as you can find. I suppose you could use other material, but I'm a big fan of cheap and quick.
Step 2, clean said sprue. There are several ways to clean it, but your goal is a straight stick of sprue. Cut off everything that isnt a straight line.
Step 3, Stick it in a pencil sharpener. I use a cheap pink one I stole from my wife, but any pencil sharpener will do. I'm not sure if the electric are strong enough, but its worth a try.
Step 4, Sharpen it to a nice point. -
Step 5. Cut off the point and viola! you have a nice uniform spike.
Step 6(for chaos players only) Glue said spikes all over everything. The more spikes the better.

It's a pretty good idea, but I think it would be a bit too thick unless you can find some really thin sprues. Do you have any pictures so we can see what the end product looks like?
Also, would resin sprues would work better since they're much softer than plastic and wouldn't tear up the sharpener as much?

I was digging around the house a while back, and I noticed a pack of plastic dart tips I had lying around. They're thin, long enough to give you enough leeway for cutting various lengths, and are dirt cheap for a pack that would give you enough spikes to cover more than a few LRs.

Here is a sample of what they turn out like. This is part of the Aegis defense line I am working on.
To answer a few questions;
1, not sure if the resin would work better... I have yet to try it.
2. The sprue is a bit smaller then a standard pencil sharpener, however, if you hold it straight on and apply a bit of pressure, it works just fine. I then clean up any left overs with an exacto knife just like I would on any other model.

Oh, that looks a lot better than what I was imagining.
I might have to try that out sometime.
