Hey everyone!

I picked up FoF and CWGH recently (still waiting for the package though), and im starting my binge on Cold War stuff! This of course means I have a few questions, and I didn't want to necro the OLD thread about the same topic.

1) I decided to switch to 15mm for this instead of my usual 20mm. It just makes it easy on me since I have plenty of 15mm European terrain from FoW. I'm not versed well in 15mm ranges though. I have heard good things about QRF, Peter Pig, and the like but im not sure who has what to fit my interests. Any experienced people want to help distinguish the different companies for my tiny brain

2) I am mostly looking at Americans, West Germans, and Soviets for my armies. I would do Brits, but I have seen way too much of Cold War Brits. Although, I may expand on this later if I enjoy it. Anyone know who makes great stuff for them? Not quite sure what era of the Cold War I want to do yet, although im most likely looking at late 70's-early 80's as usual.

Thanks for any help!

15mm is a bit of a sod for modern, there really isn’t that much about. Peter Pigs AK47 range contains US Marines and some plenty of generic AK47 wielding ‘regulars’ that would work perfectly well as Russian conscripts.

Khurasan miniatures in the states have just released some lovely US marines and an M1A1, apparently Ruskies are in the works. Sadly their site is offline atm as their owner is away for a month.

No Idea about QRF, though the pictures on their site do the company no favors at all. They look awful.

Zvezda are releasing 1/100 modern stuff later in the year, no dates yet though. But it will cut down the costs of tanks.

Hmm, that's sad to know.

I was originally going to do 20mm, but the size of 15mm (and the amount I intend to field) worked more for me. However...I guess I could end up doing 20mm, I would just need to get new terrain (unless 15mm terrain looks okay with 20mm...I never actually tried that...hmm...). I like having a lot of different poses in my army, and if I can get it I like to have each member of a platoon looking different, but above 15mm that's a bit hard for me to locate.

One of the advantages of 20mm is all of the manufactures and you can get alot of them cheaply.

For Cold War/Modern the best options are either 20mm or 6mm. They tend to have the most comprehensive ranges available.

Obviously 6mm isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but on the bright size it’s ludicrous cheap to get a force together. 40p a tank from Heroic and Ros and the range is staggering.

6mm seems a bit too tiny for my fat fingers, but I'll certainly look into it

Anyone know who makes good West German tanks in 20mm? I'm gonna be using Elhiem for the infantry, since I can't find too many other good ranges. Maybe Liberation for the US Infantry, since I haven't found anyone else...

For the fun of it, I decided to look into 6mm a bit. I was looking at different companies, but I can't quite find something I like hahahahahaha. Also, excuse my ignorance, what does stuff like 40p and 50p mean? I can tell it's a currency, but im not sure how that translates into the dollar

Yes you are right it is pennies. Heroics and Ros are British company that do a massive range of 1/300 wargaming miniatures. Their WW2 and Modern ranges are extremely wide and whilst they won’t blow your socks off sculpting wise, they still do the job very well indeed.

This is a close up of one of their Sherman tanks. It might seem ghastly up close but when you consider it’s only 2cm long it does the job fine. En Masse they look great.

A tank from them is on average 40p which is about 60 US cents. Obviously some of the heavier vehicles are more expensive, but you can get a whole army for the price of a unit in some systems.

Here is a modern Chinese tank battalion from them. See what I mean about them looking great in a big group?

Oh, that does like nice. I think I might end up doing 6mm...it's been looking better and better the more research I do...

Few questions:

1) I''ll likely be using FoF, but anyone know any other good 6mm rule sets?

2) Who makes good 6mm Infantry (Cold War era of course)?
